Bessinger's Barbecue

Great food! Service was beyond amazing. Sit down or drive through BBQ place. Their sweet hickory sauce is now one of my favorites. There is an app you can download for ease of ordering. Fair portions for the price. Stopped in because someone else posted a picture of the ribs, and they did not disappoint. I'll be coming back any time I am in Charleston.

Whenever I come home to Charleston, this is one of the places I must visit. Bessinger's reminds me of home and being in Charleston. The food hasn't changed although prices are much higher, so budget accordingly. I have been getting the same order since I was a child - cheeseburger basket (ATW) and a basket of onion rings. There are not enough words to describe the onion rings except... God, Lord, they are still amazing.

When you walk in, you order your food, pay and sit down at a table. They will call your name once your order is ready. The Stars of my plate was the jalapeño corn bread and the Chicken wings in their special dry rub, I also got the skins in their special dry rub, these 3 items were spectacular. Now the Mac and cheese and the pork, it was alright, not the best, and it was cold. Nice atmosphere with Country music playing in the background. Family friendly and pretty quick service. A lot of food, I had to take half home.

I was extremely disappointed that they were out of brisket at 5:45 at night. They were doing a brisk business in drive through. I ended up with a pulled pork sandwich. This is your typical BBQ place where you walk up to the counter to order and can buy sandwich with sides or by the pound. You walk up to pick up your food when it is ready. The sandwich came with a mountain of fries and 2 onion rings (that seemed more like a hush puppy with onion in it). The pulled pork came with Carolina sauce on it. So you better like it that way.

My son & I decided that we wanted to try some real Southern BBQ food and saw this place from the road driving west from Chareston. We parked for free outside this place. Here, you place your order at the counter, leave your name and then they shout it out when your food is ready. We didn't really know what to choose but the young lady behind the counter helped us out. She recommended that I try the Pulled Pork with pork bake beans, mac & cheese and corn bread. My son ordered chicken which came with a huge, delicious onion ring. It came on a tray with the food presented on a metal tray with greaseproof paper with some of the sides coming in small cardboard containers. No plates not silver cutlery in sight. We also bought large drinks from the "fountain" – chilled lemonade & I also tried Dr Peppers. On our way out, with stomachs full, I caught up with our server again. She confirmed that we definitely had a typical Southern styled meal. This isn't a high class restaurant. A bit down to earth but with great food!

Full disclosure, I don't eat meat! But got some sides, loved the potato salad and the cole slaw. Mac and cheese ok. My mom said the collard greens and pulled pork sandwich were good. Also tried a local ale (sour blueberry lime) which was tasty. Not a long wait and plenty of indoor seating plus some picnic tables outside.
