The James Beard Award should let you know what you are in for. This was the ultimate southern food. Everything was off the charts. This was my first but not my last trip. The fried chicken was fresh out of the fryer and was the best I’ve ever had. The okra soup was good on it’s on and the mac and cheese was just like my grandma used to make. The red rice was also fantastic.

When my Wife and I looked up best Southern Food in South Carolina this was the first place to pop up, And once we tasted the food we can see why! The Fried Chicken was amazing, the Crab Balls were amazing, the Corn Bread was amazing, both the Seafood Rice and Red Rice was amazing, pretty much everything we tasted was amazing 😂 The drinks were gigantic! And they brought the food upstairs to our table, definitely recommend going here if you want some real good southern food!

Just simply Love this place!! When I lived and worked in Charleston I would have lunch here everyday. I had the pleasure to meet Mrs. Bertha back then and some of the family. I live in Florida now and my wife and kids fell in love with this restaurant too, every chance when visiting this is our soul food go to place! Never disappointed!!

Definitely worth the wait! We waited roughly 15-20 minutes (not long) on a Saturday around noon - the line was socially distant, and the staff made sure those waiting for their food stayed 6 feet apart as well. Several tables for outdoor seating. The okra soup and cornbread were amazing, as well as the juicy fried chicken and fried fish.

If you like soul food and low country cuisine, Bertha’s is where it’s at. There will probably be a line, and it is located further north on the peninsula away from the tourist areas. That said the food at Bertha’s is phenomenal, you can’t go wrong with the fried chicken, fish, Mac n cheese, red rice, and much more. I’ve never seen a menu posted, but the staff was very friendly and happy to explain the menu to guests. Currently there are no tables inside but there is a covered outdoor seating area with a handful of tables. It’s no surprise this restaurant has been around so long, and with food quality like this, I expect it to remain so for decades to come! Make sure to come hungry as well.

The food was pretty good. My family would recommend the okra soup, red rice, and seafood. The fried chicken was, however, dry. We did really appreciate that while we were there on a particularly hot day, one of the workers brought freeze pops for everyone waiting in line. The staff was friendly but we wished someone would have been more attentive to the tables, as many of them had been left unwiped.

Anyone who's been to Charleston before knows that it's an awesome place with tons history, beautiful scenery and most importantly amazing food. Charleston is prototypically southern and despite growing up in South Carolina I'm a relative rookie to soul food. That's why when we were last in Charleston I was excited to go to Bertha's Kitchen a @beardfoundation winning meat and 3 shop. Founded by black women and still run almost exclusively by black women you can take solace in knowing this place is the real deal. Let's talk about some of my fav dishes from the experience: 1. Fried chicken: from what I can tell online, the fried chicken won this place the James beard award. Extra crispy and flavorful skin, juicy chicken - this fried chicken hit different 2. Okra soup: this soup was hearty and delicious, I don't even like okra but this was a highlight 3. Fried shrimp: extremely crispy, not overly chewy and totally delicious this was amazing and I loved every bite of it Honorable mentions: candied yams, corn bread, crab balls, and seafood rice I'll be back here next time in Charleston - and if you're in town be sure to check it out!!

Bertha's offers a soul food option not to be missed if you're going to travel to Charleston. In a very small unobtrusive old house converted into Charleston's famous soul food kitchen, locally owned and family operated, close enough to downtown to make it worth the trip on the way to or from the Airport. You cannot go wrong with a visit to Charleston's best soul food enterprise, I recommend that you bring your own silverware and some really good takeout or to go plates because you'll want to take this food with you on your trip. If you're looking for good food at a good price, filling and wholesome then this is definitely a place worth looking for. If you come during the day be prepared to wait because this place will be packed. I had okra and shrimp soup, shrimp and gravy over red rice with a liberal helping of Texas Pete red sauce, cabbage and ham hoc, and corn bread for just under 15$ on a seafood Saturday 2pm.
