Xiao Bao Biscuit is a special restaurant in downtown Charleston. With an ever evolving menu of Asian inspired dishes along with a few standards that can always be found this eatery kicks ass.
The food is prepared with seasonal vegetables and fresh spices. The plates are a good size but not too big so that you can order several and try a variety of different flavors. This is what makes XBB a great dining experience. There is always something new to try and the variety makes return trips fun and interesting.
I tend to gravitate towards restaurants and businesses when the owner is present and takes an active participation in getting to know the customers. The owner Joey can be found there most nights behind the bar conversing with customers and explaining the menu while masterfully preparing unique drinks.
Overall Joey and his staff have managed to create a restaurant with a great vibe. I think that's what makes it fun place to eat. First and foremost the food is excellent and consistently good. Couple that with great drinks and a relaxed atmosphere and you have a winner. Fortunately for us in Charleston XBB has found a strong following and will be here for a long time.
The food was fabulous. We ordered a chicken with green onions and red chili peppers, a plate of pork and shrimp dumplings, plus the special with asparagus noodles. I thought my husband was going to lick the bowl! The three dishes plus rice were a perfect meal. The waitress was great. Very impressed.
We totally vibed at this dope spot for lunch. The ambiance was chill and cozy, setting the perfect mood. Now, even though they kept it low-key with a limited menu, they straight-up nailed it in the food department. Trust me, it was lit!
We went all out and ordered some next-level dishes. The Fancy Boy Fried Rice. It was the bomb! And that Green Curry Fish with Red Snapper. Mind-blowing! But the real showstopper was those dumplings, my dude. Watching them being crafted from scratch? That's some next-level culinary artistry right there.
Oh, and we didn't forget about the little ones. The kids' menu came through with some crispy fried chicken and rice. It's all about keeping it cool for everyone in the crew, and this place delivered on that front. Can't wait to hit it up again! 🍽️🔥😎
DELICIOUS! Located in an old gas station Xiao Bao Biscuit is an absolute gem. Start with some tasty cocktails, maybe one with schezuan to get your taste buds jumping, and follow it up with some delicious family style food. The okonomiyaki is a delicious meal, especially with the pork candy on top! Will certainly be back for dinner to get some Bao buns as well!
On top of everything you get to watch then make home made dumplings!
The dishes aren't authentic but they are very good interpretations of them. The okonomiyaki had just the right amount of sweetness and the pad kra is spicy without being too hot. The basil comes through without overpowering.
What a gem of the restaurant. It is a very funky place, so cool and unique. The menu is limited but the food is absolutely delicious. Some dishes were quite spicy like papaya salad but tasted so good. Dumplings were amazing. And the okonomiyaki - cabbage pancake so delicious. They do not make any changes to their dishes. The portions are very generous. Highly recommended.
A great place for dinner, it’s quite delicious. I love the hipster atmosphere they have going on. You walk in and know things are getting made from scratch. Staff is friendly and attentive, portions are shareable. My only complaint was the meals were extremely salty, not sure if that’s the norm or if it was just our dish. The salt overpowered the flavors. Still delicious.
It was our final night in Charleston and we had already eaten dinner, but I saved this place for a long time and wanted to try it before we left! We came here already full, and despite this, had an amazing experience with EXCELLENT food! Xiao Bao Biscuit really is a gem of Charleston - if you like unique, creative Asian fusion food, this is the place to go. We got their Lucky Dog Sake (imported from Japan in a little juice box container; very creative), fried dumplings with chili caramel lemongrass pork and peanut filling, as well as the pad kra pow. Everything was awesome!! The sake was great, the pad kra pow was amazing (easily as good as the best we had when visiting Thailand last year), and the fried dumplings were on another level of good!! They were some of the best dumplings we’ve ever tried, and top it off, they were gluten-free! I absolutely recommend getting these before anything else - I could have 20 of them and still not get tired. This is an amazing place, service is wonderful, and I totally recommend visiting next time you visit Charleston!
We enjoyed visiting this place for lunch. the Japanese cabbage pancake was so delicious I would definitely come back for that! Worth visiting if you’re looking for some thing different than southern food in the area.
Loved the Fancy Boy Rice & Som Tum w/ Chicken. It's definitely a must try. I love the family style dining as well.
Need a lunch spot in Charleston? Don't miss this place! Outstanding flavors, mouthwatering food and great neighborhood atmosphere. Service was excellent and our bellies were full. My husband and I had an incredible meal and we would absolutely go back!
Such a favorite of our family. We live out of town but have made this place a go to every year on vacation. The menu is funky and we love getting almost one of everything to share.
