Simply put: excellent. I have tried quite a few different rolls and each has been a treat. They also catered to a special request I had and made it exactly as described. Will be back for more!

Absolute freshest sushi in Richmond. The owner/chef really knows what he’s doing- everything I’ve tried has been fantastic!

Momotaro has the BEST sushi in town, period. The atmosphere is chill, the staff are super friendly! The food itself is always really fresh and delicious. I love the new bar and can’t wait till they start serving draft beer because this will definitely be my regular watering hole. As a rule I always ask what’s the freshest (good rule for any sushi restaurant) and the chef is super cool and engaging. I’ve tried other sushi places in town, (sticky rice is a fun drinking/karaoke atmosphere but has bland sushi and is never that fresh, and akida/fighting fish are fresh but they’re never as friendly) this place is the real deal and as soon as they start catering to the bar crowd with the new renovations (which look really great btw) it’s gonna be crazy busy! They’re always adding new menu items, the new spring rolls were absolutely delicious! If nothing else, the GIANT salt water tank makes for a beautiful backdrop to a cute date night. 5 out of 5 stars!

A++. Momotaro is a true sushi restaurant. They really care about the freshness of the seafood. I have been eating sushi all my life and have tried many place in different countries, Momotaro struck me with the authentic Japanese flavors. I give it a A+. People who don't like Momotaro does not know what sushi should really taste like!

Great Sushi Place!. We were in Richmond for a show at the Convention Center. I checked on Urbanspoon.com for recommended sushi places. This place was small - that's not a negative! It made up for that in great service and great food. The biggest surprise was the red bean ice cream at the end. Yes red beans like red beans and rice. You should go if you find yourself in the area.

Innovative, and fresh. I recently moved to Richmond from Cali about 6 months ago, and have been on a bit of a search for some fresh east coast sushi. Though, the fish was served ona bed of lettuce as the other user stated, the fish was fresher than anywhere else I've tried. Momotaro (as well as sumo san) have definitely met up to my high expectations for sushi. The wait staff is attentive and enjoyable, and they treat you like VIP because it's so small. I suggest getting some shumai and the smokey tuna roll--as well as some sashimi.

My husband and I discovered Momotaro while walking around Carytown, and we decided to try it a couple of weeks ago. He's from NYC, so he's had a lot of good Japanese food over the years. We tried the miso soup first, and we immediately knew we'd found a gem of a place. Next we tried their Angie roll and Double Rainbow roll - perfection. The shumai was literally the best we've ever had. We also got a pot of hot green tea, which normally I'm not a fan of. Theirs was SO good we finished the whole pot together. We ordered shrimp hibachi next, and it was just as delicious as everything else. We had strawberry mochi with ice cream for dessert (honestly the best mochi I've had). Service was great - prompt and polite. The chef came out to check on everything a few times and he was super polite and grateful. We both agree this is one of our new favorite restaurants we've ever eaten at. We went back again tonight and ordered the miso soup, Angie roll, shumai, green tea, and mochi ice cream again, and tried their shrimp curry bowl. Of course we loved that too! I can't recommend Momotaro enough!!

My wife and I first ate at Momotaro about a week ago and we immediately fell in love with it! I've had a lot of Japanese food over the years and I still love all the food I've ordered so far. I don't frequently come across good miso soup, but their miso was so good that I was excited to try everything else. And it didn't disappoint! Their shumai is like nothing else I've ever tried--light, sweet, and savory all at the same time. Their Angie Roll and Double Rainbow Rolls were all the way across--I mean *delicious*. We tried their hibachi and curry bowl, which were both so flavorful. I loved their green tea and their dessert as well. The atmosphere was great, the service was quick, and the quality and amount of food you get for the price is simply amazing. We'll be going back a lot!

Came in at 630 on a Monday and grabbed appetizers (miso soup and ginger salad) which were great and then ordered a crazy dragon roll along with a volcano roll. Both came out in orderly time and tasted amazing. The service was quick and polite, never pushing to order or leave. Would come back anytime!

Daughter and I love to try new sushi restaurants. We wanted to go down to Cary Street on a Saturday night to be able to walk around and check out some of the other stores. We had never been to Momotaro, so we thought we would give it a try. We were a tad worried since it was like 7pm on a Saturday night and we were the only people in the place and only ones the whole time we were there. We did see quite a bit of to go orders to go though. We ordered a Eel Dragon roll, eel roll, spicy tuna and tempura shrimp roll. The gentleman that waited on us was super nice and quick to help us out. Our order didn't take overly long to get made why we're waiting though they have a pretty cool saltwater fish tank setup for my daughter and I watch the fish for a while which was kind of fun. The decor is pretty cool, not a very large place maybe 10 tables or so and they had 1 table set up out on the sidewalk. Both my daughter and I thought the sushi was really good. I thought the quality was pretty top-notch and the size of the rules we're pretty filling. Don't know if it was a fluke and just a time and when we went with no one there but this place should definitely be much busier. When we venture back down to Cary Street again for sushi, I'm sure we would be stopping in.

Small. Local. Not whitewashed like so many others. What else could you ask for in ambience? The food is delicious, the people friendly, and the atmosphere is quiet. I’ve had no problems with portions (and neither have my friends). You have to try the plum wine!

Loved the atmosphere. It was very serene and quiet and the host was the same, but welcoming and friendly. Sushi was very good. Not cut "expertly", but fantastic. This may be my favorite sushi place in Richmond now.

I’ve passed this spot a few times with my partner, but when we finally decided to go in and check it out it was when they were closed between service hours. The owner invited us in to dine anyway, and was super polite. We had the carytown and volcano rolls, along with the salmon and flying fish roe nigiri. We also had some plum wine. Everything tasted great, and the ambiance was nice too. Had a great meal and really enjoyed ourselves, 5 stars for sure!

Wow. I don't know what to say. My fiancee and I were strolling down Carytown. We passed by the restaurant at first and by the time we were ready to eat and walked back to the restaurant they were ten minutes past closing time for their lunch service. They saw us looking at their menu again and invited us inside. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the music was perfect for a date day. I started by ordering plum wine and salmon Nigiri and flying fish roe sashimi. I personally start with nigiri and sashimi at any new sushi place I visit to get a feel for how thier sushi will be. The salmon was perfectly prepared and the roe sashimi was a great transition to some special rolls. After that we had the carytown roll, volcano, and finally ordered the tornado roll to-go. I am terribly grateful that they opened their doors for us. It may have been the best sushi I've had Richmond, so far. The service was great, too. It wasn't till after we had our meal that I looked at the reviews; I can only go off my experience but I would 10/10 recommend people go here and will definitely be going back myself!
