University of Richmond (1975-1980). I ate there more times than I can remember. The Italian whole sub - heated with hot peppers was/is the best. Bernie is the greatest! Stop looking for the best sub shop - you found it in Bernie's. I come back to Bernie's when I'm in town. I must go again soon.
Remembered Bernies from the college days in the 70's; Italian sub is a favorite- still made the same way it was back then. Loved it. It's an iconic place worth stopping by- great food at a great price.
A Family Tradition since the Early-80s!. Bernie's is a hallowed piece of land in a little strip mall, right next door to an alteration shop (so you can go have your waistline extended after lunch).
The Regular (Italian Sub) has, and will always be the sandwich of choice in our family. The meat is sliced fresh to order, and the bread is lightly toasted to give it a fantastic ability to soak up the spicy peppers and yet provide a fantastic crunch with each bite.
I've seen the place packed with a line out the door, just waiting to place an order. I've seen the place completely dead with just our party of 1-4 as customers. What I've also noticed is the condition of the "decoration" on the walls (mostly pennants from schools and universities across the country) continues to deteriorate and gather dust.
Bernie, please give your place a good scrub and a fresh coat of paint, but don't ever... ever change the care and love you put into the food!
I love "The Regular" with hop peppers of course, but while in there to pick up my food, I couldn't help but notice that the place is filthy! There were napkins, food pieces and chips all over the dingy carpeted floor. I was the only one in the place! This did not seem like one days bit of filth, break out a vacuum and some cleaning products to make this place presentable! It was utterly disgusting!

The cash only deal is annoying, but man are these subs heavenly. Get the Italian, you won't be sorry. Toasted to perfection and full of spice and flavor, it really is one of the best deals in Richmond. Call ahead for cary out.

Best subs in the world. Call ahead to order, because the subs take awhile to make. Not the most sanitary and high class dining area, but doesn't bother me. Worth the wait... Absolutely delicious.
Bernie's has the best Italian sub in the world. This sub is hot, cheesy, crunchy, chewy, moist, and spicy. Get a whole Italian sub (with peppers if you like some heat) and a large drink for under $10. Bernie's a small homey comfortable restaraunt where the staff knows your name and greets you with a smile. Bernie's is truly a diamond in the rough and if you live within an hour Bernie's you should go.
This place is mythical and legendary. I like to call it the preppy sub Mecca. I'm headed there now because the Wednesday special is the steak and cheese. Cash only.
Excellent, tasty, hot sub every time! It may not be the prettiest place you’ve ever been but the food sure makes up for any faults you may find 🤤

First time here. The Italian was great, just how it comes with the spicy pepper relish.
My first time here, and the food was really nice and spiced well. Not bland at all. A bit noisy but any good sub shop usually is. Lots of traffic from both in house dining and to go orders. I would go back again.
Staff is always pleasant, order is always on time and the food... it's always consistently amazing. I love their Italian sub!

Been coming here since I was a kid. There is really only one thing to get in my opinion and that would be the Italian (regular) with light peppers. Never failed me in my time of need.
Most of the other subs are good as well. One thing I would say is not to try to customize them or expect a subway like experience. You'll be disappointed. Stick to the ways they do things and it'll all work out!
I wouldn't recommend the pizzas as they aren't that great. Reminds me of frozen microwavable personal pizzas that you can buy for a couple bucks at the grocery store.
Definitely call in advance if you want to be in and out quick. A sub will always take between 15 and 20 minutes to make here.
All in all I give it 5 stars not because it of its cleanliness, trendy ingredients or healthy options but because it gives me a sub that I can count on year in and year out to be delicious. That's all I need.
Best subs in RVA! An institution for the last 45 years and for many more to come.
Expect to wait 15-20 minutes for your sandwich, but it is well worth the it. The Regular is the best Italian sub outside of New Jersey. If you don't like toasted bread then you will disagree. That is fine because it is a small place and you will not be taking a seat at a table I'll be sitting at.
