A great find for lovers of German food served in a cozy tavern setting. Veal is not common on local menus so nice to find here. The very large cuts at reasonable prices was offset by low quality veal however. Nonetheless, a good find. The player “piano”is unique in that it combines the piano with an accordion, drums, cymbals, and horn to create a self-contained band.
My host recommended this as a local favorite and what a gem! Max's has apparently been a German restaurant for over 100 years and the history and love really shows.
Hands down some of the best sausage I've ever had--not salty or fatty in the least, but juicy and tender and flavorful. I usually don't like sausage much! The sauerkraut is perfection, as is the apple butter that comes with the bread.
The beer flight is a generous pour of four pre-chosen German brews, all good if you like German styles.
The decor is thematic, though the layout was a little more crowded than I'd prefer, though was very doable. Noise levels weren't bad at all. Service was a little slow, but as we weren't in a hurry, this wasn't an issue for us.
Make sure you bring quarters to make the piano band play!
Definitely a fun stop!
Went there for authentic pierogis. And Max’s didn’t disappoint. Very cool atmosphere. The brat wasn’t the best but I’ve been to Germany recently and have high standards for that.
This place was within walking distance to our hotel and to PNC Stadium (Pirates game)
We were seated right away and the staff was attentive and friendly. I loved the atmosphere and our waitress was great. We will definitely eat here again!
We had a few drinks at Allegheny City Brewing and wanted something to eat so we walked to Max's. Glad we found this place! Interesting history. Love how they have been around forever. Super friendly staff and good food. The apple raisin dressing on the pork was unique. Loved the German potato salad. We would go back.
Loved the old original woodwork and floor. Food and service were excellent!
Dinner with friends. Biggest complaint - too many choices that looked great. We all enjoyed what we picked. Potato pancakes were a hit.
Could use a little refresh inside but didn't take away from our dinner.
Our world, as it is nowadays, is exhausting. Just trying to maneuver doing ordinary stuff has suddenly become complicated. So when my friends and I were in the neighborhood of Max's Allegheny Tavern and decided to do lunch there, we were transported to a time when things were simple and right and good. Where people were eating and talking an laughing out loud ,instead of the silence at tables when people are on their phones. Service is lovely. This is the second time we have been here in two weeks. Why? Because the food is DELICIOUS! And, reasonably priced! And terrific service! All of this used to be what most expected when dining out, but not anymore. So when you go to Max's and consistently get all of the above, it makes for happiness. We have ordered Max's Famous Reuben,(but with turkey, not to be confused with the turkey Reuben) with hot German potato salad, North Side Ham and Swiss with potato pancakes, Allegheny Club with onion rings, Maxburger with fries, and apple strudel. You need to try everything we ordered, you will not be disappointed!!!! in fact, one of my friends ordered three plates of potato pancakes, and two to go. She got some strange looks from the rest of us, but not from our server, who just smiled. Their full menu, with vegetarian offerings is available on line, and while there, check out the history of this wonderful restaurant. They also have a children's menu, and maybe an adult would like to look at that as well, since you can get chicken tenders off that menu. They have handicapped provisions, such as a ramp they can pull out for wheel chair access, you just need to pop your head in the door and ask for assistance. Street parking is the norm, which can be difficult, but there are two public parking spots a block and a half down the street. No, I am not related to anyone at Max's and I'm not being paid to say nice things. I'm just happy to tell others looking for a few hours of lovely time to share with friends and experience great dining as well where to go to get that...
😍
Max's is just wonderful. The atmosphere is just great. The servers are wonderful very friendly. The food was delicious and hot the schnitzel was tender. The Reuben is great and crunchy. The potato pancakes are off the chain. I prefer applesauce over sour cream but it's up to you. Prices are reasonable comparable to the market.
We flew in from three different cities to celebrate my birthday. We went to Max's for lunch. Jan was our server and she was fantastic!! Several people joined our party and she kept up with everything. The food was delicious, the service was great, and I will definitely eat here again my next trip to Pittsburgh!
