Review The Kunjip - New York City

Clara R.
Had dinner with hubby on Saturday night. We were looking for a restaurant that had cold noodles and bbq. When we arrived the host told us to go upstairs so we thought we'd get seated right away but there were a few people waiting. The cold noodles were refreshing and the marinated beef ribs were delicious. Sometimes they give you ribs with too much fat or with too little meat but these ribs were plump and juicy.

Oh so good. I can not say enough nice things, they even had someone cook the meat for us. Medium rare to PERFECTION. Restaurant was clean, staff so friendly and curteous. Again, the food is SO GOOD.

not sure why the reviews here are so mixed, I really loved dining here! the food comes out fast and it’s delicious, the ban chan is fantastic, and the prices are unbeatable! I loved the spicy tofu stew. will definitely be back again!

I usually come to this area for Korean food but had never tried this restaurant before, so so so glad I did this time around. Everything tasted amazing!! There are complementary sides that get refilled the moment you finish them and a complementary tea after you are done your food too. The staff works fast and are very polite! Very great experience, I highly recommend.

Had the Gobdol Bibimbob & Soup Lunch Special two weeks in a row! So delicious! The restaurant provides various small appetizers as well & some of them were different from the previous times I had eaten there (been going here for 16 years). Very reasonably priced lunch special for the large amount of food. I like the upstairs dining room better because I enjoy a bit more ambiance. The service up there was great. Everyone was attentive, quick, & it certainly was a team effort to get everything to me. I'm craving the food as I write this. Will most definitely be back soon!

Worst service ever. The owner/waitress literally cursed and shouted at us in Korean. Didn’t feel a single bit of hospitality during the entire meal even though the restaurant name was family restaurant….Food was average, but who would want to pay to be treated so rude????? For my taste, Toufu is good. Regret so much that we didn’t check the google review but just randomly dropped in…

A clean looking restaurant with 2 floors. My son & I went for a late lunch (around 2pm) on a Monday, but the place was still pretty crowded. Was told to go upstairs to be seated, but when I went upstairs, no one was there to greet me. After a few minutes, one of the staff asked me to go back downstairs, so I told her that I was actually asked to come up here. As I was grumbling & heading back downstairs, another staff called me & put us on a table. The food was pricey, but then again, I'm comparing against Korean food pricing from Houston. Ordered 2 main dishes (LA galbi & cold noodles combo and hot pot bibimbap) & it ended up almost being $70 after taxes & tips. The food itself was good & they do serve a variety of side dishes. But the hot pot bibimbap did not have much beef at all, so it was almost a vegetarian meal.

Went to eat dinner with my partner, it was excellent. One of the best Korean meals I've had, and the staff was very helpful when it came to questions about the menu as well. Special mention should also go to the speed at with the staff was working, as it took less than 5 mins from the order to the meals arriving and any other request ver done equally fast. If you're around Koreatown, this definitely is worth a visit!

If you like HAIR in your food and EXTREMELY RUDE SERVICE, this is the place for you!First of all, there is a very short, skinny, old man server on the 2nd floor. He is the most belligerent, insulting, impolite server my family and I have ever had the displeasure of encountering. We ordered the bibimbap and for one of the dishes, there were like only 4 pieces of bean sprouts in there. There should normally be way more bean sprouts in bibimbap. When we asked him for more, he said this was not his responsibility, it was the kitchen’s and he said he could not do anything about it! We tried to explain and ask nicely if he can ask the cook but he started screaming at us and said he would not do it. He ended up bringing the bean sprouts. If he was going to bring them to us ANYWAY, why all the fuss in the first place? He seems to forget what his job is. It is to serve and please the customers, not scream at them and argue over some measly bean sprouts. How difficult is it to just bring more bean sprouts? His nastiness was uncalled for. Even cooks make mistakes (like I am going to explain regarding another incident below) so what harm is there in at least asking them for a bit more ingredient when there was not enough to begin with?We were so upset that we could not eat so we decided to take everything to-go. Much to our dismay and to make things even worse, we found someone’s HAIR inside the bibimbap! Complete nasty. Only unprofessional, unclean establishments have hair in the food. Very unsanitary! We wonder what other nastiness is hiding in the food. The owner of this restaurant should take responsibility for running this place amok. The owner does not seem to do anything if servers are rude to customers, based on our experience and reading the other Yelp feedback. The owner needs to TRAIN the servers on providing basic customer service. This is not our first time encountering a rude server at this place. She needs to reorient this place to placing customers first and serving clean food with bigger portions.

Never ever going back to this place! My friends and I visited this place today. We should have checked the reviews before going here.

They give you very little portions of side dishes. Fine but you should not do that to main entrees as well! I ordered the seafood soup and the pork, oyster, and kimchi entree to share. We were sorely disappointed. There was only a sparse amount of oyster and pork and a whole lot of kimchi! For the price, you would expect good portions but this is not the place. The seafood soup also had very little seafood inside and the rest was broth. What kind of restaurant does this?

Next, I want to mention the SERVICE. Not all the tables were filled but our old male waiter (short man) upstairs was so rude to us. When we asked for more water and side dishes, he sighed and just went away. He did not come back so we had to call him again. He glared at us and then when he brought back more side dishes and water, he just sort of slammed down the dishes in front of us so that it made a loud noise!

Never have we experienced poor service like this before. That waiter needs to be retrained or quit. We are also suspicious of the owner. What kind of owner allows that sort of behavior? Judging from the reviews, she does not seem to care or do anything about the poor service. Maybe she pays them very little, which is why most of the staff there seemed disgruntled and annoyed. We will not be back.

Happened to stay at the Radisson across the street and walked down the street filled with Korean restaurant and karaoke bars. Kunjip is as Korean as it gets. Ordered a spicy pork bibimbap which came with a tofu seafood soups and other condiments like kimchi plus the Korean ride wine - soju. The order was actually good enough for two and had to take away. Authentic fare with the hot stone pot species just right for my palate. Had a bizarre encounter though with another patron sitting next to me has a fight with his lady friend and left in a fit@ of rage. In the process he left his phone behind which I pointed out to the restaurant staff and some other customers seated next to me. The guy came back and, I suspect he was on drugs, accused me of trying to steal his phone. He screamed to all the guests that I stole his phone, tried taking my photo, called me a Pakistani and hurled abuses till the staff intervened and I asked them to call the police as he was getting physical. Fortunately I stayed calm but it messed up my evening. Advice to restaurant management - please don't let this customer in your restaurant again. He can make you lose a lot of business and your customers may not come back. The staff and guests apologized and felt sorry but the whole experience was bizarre.

Was venturing around Koreatown and found this place since the place across the street had a huge lineup. It was very busy and lots of the tables were filled. We waiting about 10 mins and got in. It's pretty small but didn't realize there was more tables upstairs. Food came out steaming hot and good, same expectations as to usual korean restaurants.

Authentic Korean food and an all authentic Korean experience when you eat there! Be prepared to wait in the street and even standing on the stairs at the restaurant if you go during actual dinner time... But trust me that's a sign of a truly spectacular meal that awaits you! The spice levels are perfect so don't dial down when you order... Also must try the hot pots!

Randomly choose this place in K-town but it was like finding a needle in a haystack. What a gem! The food is very, very delicious. Probably the best Korean food I have ever had. There was so much flavour in each dish. The service is lacking and you can literally see the servers running between the tables and the kitchen. They could definitely use more people on the floor. The worse thing about this place is that they rush you out and start taking dishes off your table before you are done otherwise I would have given them a five star rating.

This is the worst Korean restaurant in this block. I have lived in NYC for 20 years and I believe this is the worst Korean food I've had.

1. The waitress was coughing inside the restaurant, right next to tables.

2. The steam dumplings were overcooked. Their wraps were mushy and broken. I asked the manager to exchange this soft, pulpy mass with new ones. He didn't see anything wrong with these broken wraps. He said to us this was just the way it was because they (people cook in the kitchen) spooned them out, therefore, there was no way these wraps would not be broken.
There are other Korean restaurans in that block serving steam dumplings. None have I eaten ever made mush steam dumplings.

3. Sanche Bibimbob came out as a huge disappointment. This dish looks very nice on the picture menu. However what went inside the dish were romaine lettuce at the bottom, a lump of spicy unknown vegatable hidden between lettuce, and some shredded vegetables. On top of everything was a very cooked fried egg (unlike the soft york egg figured on the picture menu). The rice was in a separate bowel. There was not any hot red sauce.

4. When I walked pass the door to the kitchen to the lady's room, I saw a cockroach running through the floor.

5. When I came in the restaurant, I asked the manager how to get parking discount at the Central Parking on the 32nd street. He explained to me how it worked, so I decided to stay for a meal because I thought I would get a discount on parking for $15. After I finished the meal, I gave the waitress my credit card, she refused to take it and said to me cash only for parking discount. The manager came and said "I didn't say credit." I repied "You didn't say I needed to pay cash, either". He had never mentioned once I had to pay cash in order to receive a stamp on the parking ticket. I ended up paying the bill with my credit card (just so I could leave with my child) and paying the full price on parking for $35.

Love the vibe and atmosphere for a late night spot, definitely a place to round out a night of drinking rather than to continue it as there is not a bar. Above average korean food, slightly high price for K-Town, the menu is expansive and can be very confusing for people not familiar with korean, but that is also a plus to weed out the touristy crowds. Will try a few more korean spots before returning but was worth the trip. Overall great late-night grub, not for dinner though.

Delightful food. My first Korean restaurant, and I loved it. The service was ridiculously good, and prices are a bit high, but manageable. I want to bring my family. The meat was amazing, and I loved the appetizers and bibim bobs. Can't wait to return. The bad reviews are probably competing Korean restaurants using blackmail, so screw them. GG

A trip to NYC isn't complete without a meal in Koreatown. Stopped in for a late lunch and was seated immediately. My lunch special of Bibimbap came with a bowl of spicy soup and 7 sides; enough to feed me and three or four others. And it was delicious!! Washed down with an OB, it was definitely a lovely eating experience.

Amazing food, Unique restaurant.. When in NYC for work, I went to Kunjip for dinner with a friend. The place isn't particularly welcoming to those who aren't familiar with the long wait, cramped seating and INCREDIBLE FOOD. You queue up, order and then wait to be seated. The wait is not for the faint of heart - or the hangry. You sit down, and immediately, you get gads of flavorful goodies that weren't part of what you ordered - and they're great. You get your food and beverages very quickly after being seated, and the food itself makes everything better. I highly recommend this place despite the unique type of service and the long wait. It's a fun and different experience!

Wost service!!!. My friend and I always go to this restaurant and never have a problem with it, but problem started tonight. We wait for 30min to get sit down. When we finish eating and pay the bill, i give a $3 tip and the bill is $26.
The employee (woman) say "miss, this is not enough tip." so I give her one more dollar and she say "five dollar is better" so I give her five dollars. My friend was in the bathroom and that woman just grabs her bag and coat, waiting for me to get it! Later we left the restaurant and think this is not right, we went back to the restaurant to the front desk and that guy call her over. I ask if that a amount of tip we are supposed to give and she says yes. So I ask where it says so and she took out the menu and the menu only says "service charge is not included in the price." okay is not included but it didn't say how much service charge we have to give. Isn't it all up to us? She says "well in new york is 10 to 20%. I was like it didn't say 10 to 20%. She says does u want the money back. My friend says we don't want the money; we just want to tell our point. She says okay, thank you. She never says sorry and didn't look like she is and look mean as well. What kind of service is this? Waiting for 30min and rushing us out and demanding $5 tip. I WILL NEVER GO TO THIS RESTAURANT AGAIN.

Enjoyed. I really enjoyed my meal at Kunjip. The food was fast, the beer was cold, and the service was friendly. I live outside of the city and all of my tablemates live in the city and none were particularly thrilled with the food. I'm relatively new to Korean cuisine and found it quite good at Kunjip.

NYC: Kunjip. Fantastic Seafood Pancake! Crispy, slightly soft on the inside, not sitting in a pool of oil like most places in order to acheive crispiness. Crave their pancakes all the time. Have yet to find anything that comes close to their pancake since visiting them!

This is one of my favorite restaurants.
Great quality, great service...
My fav. dish was the 'kimchi jjigae'.
i would recommend this restaurant
to anyone! I'll be back for sure!

The best Korean cuisine in New York. Lines, Lines, Lines. Haven't seen so many people lined up for a Korean restaurant like that occurs EVERYDAY at Kunjip Korean restaurant. First of all, the owner does everything. She is the sole reason everything likes this place. She pays attention to every customer and remembers their faces. Thousands of people go throught this 24 hour restaurant, and she seems to know them all. Everything dish is wonderful there, but of course the thick slices of pork belly will have you by the stomach. Some Korean soju or rice wine with stripped scallion salad and grilled pork belly always hits the spot. Try their kimchi soup as well, spicy and full of zest. If you are ever in K-town on 32nd and Broadway, bypass all the the other Korean restaurants and go for the best. Kunjip, means older family's house or Big house, and definitely treats you like family.

The restaurant doesn’t take reservations, so potential diners have to wait in a long line that snakes through the restaurant and protrudes out onto the street and halfway down the block. It gets busy, but the line moves fast. If those Kunjip servers are anything, they’re efficient.

Perhaps a little too efficient. When we were seated (after about a 20 minute wait), they immediately started bringing out our order, which they’d taken while we waited in line. We ordered drinks–a cold sake for Rachel, a hot sake for me–and I had to very firmly request my hot sake despite the woman’s insistence that “cold sake is better.” Yes, it was a Saturday night, and yes, they had a long line-up, but the server made it very clear that making a hot sake to order was very much an inconvenience. I pressed my point and eventually received my drink from the mildly irritated middle-aged female server.,,

This meal had me at "banchan." I found each of the dishes to be extraordinarily flavorful, healthy, and positively unique to my more "vanilla" Western palate. Personal favorites included the kimchi and the cucumbers.
I Just Want To Eat
Then, nothing. We were wondering if they would take care of putting the meat on the BBQ device or if we should do it ourselves, especially as the broth that was in it started to evaporate! After few minutes, I courageously decided to do it myself... What I did not expect was the smoke coming out and, suddenly, the staff realized we were there.

I headed to Kunjip over the weekend after drinking across the street at IchiUmi’s lounge. I love eating Korean food because there’s always so much variety and the restaurants are always open 24/7. I’ve never been to Kunjip because I usually stay closer to Broadway (my favorites include Seoul Garden and Gahm Ni Oak), but my friend wanted to eat at Kunjip so I followed him. We ordered and a server brought along lots of banchan

After some shopping in midtown, we had worked up quite an appetite so we headed over to K-Town for our evening meal. Kunjip came highly recommended to us by a friend who described it as the type of food your Korean Mom would make. This sounded tempting so we got in line- and yes, it is an actual line instead of a wait list. This place was bustling-

Kunjip is the type of place that is probably too popular for its own good. You never are able to come in and enjoy a relaxing meal with friends, as you are constantly reminded of the hustle and bustle. A menu is shoved in your hands as soon as you arrive, an unsubtle hint to get your order ready while you wait for a table. The hosts and servers are all brusk and at times even rude, but if you're ready for this atmosphere, it's worth it for the food. There are many splendid cold noodle dishes, and Kunjip is a great place to come for summer dining, despite the fact that they also cater to the BBQ crowd. Bibim nang myun ($12.95, below) is nothing to write home about, but the dense, thin noodles do shine. It does not seem like that much food, but the noodles are weighty and this bowl will fill you up. The menu here is varied and long, like most of the Korean eateries on the block, so ordering a warm dish is not a problem either. The gobdol bibimbop ($13.95, below) ar
