Review Sushi Of Gari - New York City

Robert Viglione
This is truly one of the best sushi spots that I’ve been to, and highly recommend it. Everything was very fresh, and the chef was a master.

Sushi from NYC's old school sushiya, Sushi of Gari. It once it held a one Michelin star but not anymore to my knowledge. It is definitely one of the restaurants that started the sushi culture in the early 1990s for New Yorkers and still keeps its class to some level. For sushi perhaps, I have had better looking ones, however, the full umami flavor from its aged fresh fish was another level. You can copy the look, but the flavor was unique and this place had that depth. Of course out of their own pride or dignity, they are too cool to offer miso soup or a maki along with the nigiri. Nonetheless, I think you still need to try it at least once. I personally found their sautéd tomato garnish over the salmon nigiri very interesting. It was such a surprise how much umami flavor came out from pairing the salmon and tomato. Also, the funniest part is that the $140 sushi omakase comes with fresh wasabi, but the $40 something chirashi comes with cheap soulless dry wasabi lol...you definitely get what you pay for here....or a bit less. Speaking of the chirashi don, even though you are getting low quality, gloomy wasabi, the fish on top of the sushi rice are still very pronounced. The snapper was aged well, as I chewed a few times its flavor hit my tongue. For the akami, I usually feel that it is bland compared to other tuna cuts, but not from here. It is definitely a nice and economical way to taste aged fresh fish flavors. I see many reviews of disappointment with the food or service. However, it is worth trying in my opinion.

One of the best sushi in town! We had omakase and all sushi pieces were like artwork! Its very pricey but you get what you paid for. Highly recommended!

By far one of the best high-end sushi restaurants in NYC. It’s always crowded so be sure to call and get a reservation. I rave about this spot all the time. The omakase is worth it. Best spicy tuna rolls in manhattan. They have some gourmet items like truffle and quail egg sushi and stewed tomato’s on salmon. Their salmon sashimi is also marinated so well. The toro is unbelievable. Who knew sushi can be so good. This is a must for any sushi lover. It’s crowded every day of the week because it is so good. They have a nice Japanese beer and saki selection as well. As for taste, this is top notch. I try to go as often as possible.

Good selection of sushi! Omakase was tasty! It does get really busy so try and get a booking otherwise you might have to wait for a table!

The pinicle of new age NYC sushi. If it's worth the price is a personal call but it's as good as Ginza Yasuda and above Tonashi Nakazawa or even Brushstrook.

I went here on recommendation and I'm so glad I did. I know they are better places but this is a nice mid-range sushi restaurant. The fish was so fresh and the cuts of fish were out of this world!

Nice little place for some good sushi. Wasn't a big fan of the tofu sauce or the foie gras

Amazing original sushi. Their fish is fresh and well cooked.

Very nice Japanese restaurant! Their food is so fresh and delicious! We usually order Fatty Tuna with Salmon! SO DELICIOUS!!!! I've been only a few times, but each time has been outstanding. Everything is so flavorful! It's very pricey but i understand that since most of the food is imported from Japan and it's authentic! I recommended this place though be careful you can spend a few big bucks here!

Pretty nice, the price are very reasonable, sushi are pretty fancy, yet fish quality is pretty good. For 65 dollar, 10 course Omakase. it is worthy. After all, it use to be a Michelin 1 star. And I think it still deserves the star. 😁😁😁 I didn't take photo, but you can find more on Yelp or Google isn't it.

Probably the best sushi restaurant in New York , authentic with a gastronomic twist. Freshest fish straight from Japan combined with a mastered portion of rice that will melt in your mouth. A must try is the salmon sushi with roasted tomatoes. Beautiful wine and sake list. Book your seat at the bar and enjoy watching your sushi master create your wonderful meal. On the pricier side but so worth it!

Sushi of Gari is my favorite sushi spot that isnt over the top expensive. I come every couple months and they never let me down. I've done the tasting menu a few times and for two people will run you ~$400. if you order off the regular menu, a good amount of food and a small sake will run you ~$200. Lately i just order off the regular menu since you get a good selection anyway (and i love fatty tuna). Eating here will probably spoil you and you wont be able to order sushi off seamless anymore.

I had an omakase at Sushi of Gari and it was very impressive. Every sushi piece is like a 3 course menu in one bite. Fine quality ingredients and the sushi chef pays attention to all the details. Its a little bit on the pricey side but definitely worth it. Highly recommended.

So so good. Staff was very accommodating. To quote Action Bronson, "!@$% that's delicious". Great everything, best oyster I've had in a while. Restaurant is cozy and popular so make a reservation! or get lucky...

We decided to go here for my birthday recently and it was a wonderful experience. My husband made a dinner reservation which was smart since it was a Friday night. Once we arrived we didn't need to wait long to be seated. The restaurant is rather small and the tables are close together so it does feel a bit crowded when seated since the place was packed. Our server was friendly and attentive. I am usually one to order the combination rolls but Sushi Of Gari didn't have that so I chose individual pieces. Everything was delicious and the sushi was super fresh! The price was a bit high (like nearly everywhere in NYC) but not as high as expected and the quality of food, drinks and service was absolutely worth the money.
This is definitely somewhere I plan on visiting again but the next time I visit I plan on sitting near the sushi bar.

402 E. 78th Street, between 1st and YorkNew York, NY 10021(212) 517-5340Reservations recommendedmenu here. I heard a lot of hype about this place before deciding, yeah, I want to try this place. I’d heard rave after rave about how great the sushi was, how inventive the sauces, how wonderful… and it had better damn well be, since it’s a good ten minute walk from the train station, and about 45-50 minutes from my work place- in the opposite direction of home. The place was said to be small, and always a wait, even with reservations, so I sucked it up, made reservations for 7 pm and hoped like hell it would all work out.

Insert Superlative Here. This isn't necessarily a review as much as a recommendation. I've been to Sushi of Gari a handful of times now and each time I've gotten the Omakase. I wish I could describe everything that was delivered but there are simply too many to remembrer. I went about 2 weeks ago and it didn't fail to impress again. The omakase started with a 4 pieces of sushi that reflected each season which were excellent and it just got better from there. Of course, the highlight was the foie gras sushi with a daikon on top. Highly recommended and simply the best sushi I have ever had.

Sushi of Gari. Simply the best Japanese I have ever had. I have gone to this restuarant for well over a decade, and as time goes on, so do the prices. Sadly, the recognition it has earned, has raised the prices and driven me away from my favorite sushi place. Only go for special occasions.

Tuna by gari entree all you need to know... 8 different tuna preparations and a spicy tuba roll... Expensive but hands down the best sushi entree in manhattan... Unbelievable

A bad idea. This place is certainly popular and busy but I find it overrated and the fusion principles of combining the fish with odd sauces to distract from the purity of the fish. Service was nice enough but I far prefer the pure taste of the masterful sushi at Yasuda in NY or Hiroshi in Portland. The sushi at Gari were monster-sized, not delicate and with dense, thick sauces that
overwhelmed the texture and taste of the fish.

The one piece of sushi that will leaving you dreaming for more is the foie gras sushi with a daikon on top. It is a perfectly seared piece of foie gras over rice with a light oyster sauce and a slice of daikon on top. While, its not traditional sushi, it is simply one of the best dishes I've ever had in any restaurant.

Next up was my favorite piece of the night: salmon topped with a tomato mixture. The tomato mixture was infused with so much flavor that I could only discern a hint of the actual vegetable.
Lauren
The restaurant was cozy and unpretentious. If it wasn't for the sushi bar, you really wouldn't guess it was a Japanese restaurant. The carpeting, red banquettes and tables were all very nondescript.

I reserved seats at the sushi counter and we decided to both do the omakase; the server asked if we had any allergies (Ada had a couple) and also whether or not we liked certain cuts of fish, foie gras, and other things behind the sushi counter. I said I was game for anything and the sushi chefs began preparing fish for us. We started with white fish with lotus root and arugula:

The art of sushi making is such a traditional one that few classically trained sushi chefs (the purists) dare to stray away from its techniques, but not Masatoshi "Gari" Sugio. Gari has been creating avant-garde sushi at his restaurant (he calls it Avan G
