Everything was delicious. My friends took me here and they weren't joking about the quality of food and drink.
But I'm not here to give a food review. I actually just kinda wanted to explain the Friday setup from about 7pm to 9pm that I experienced because I would've been lost had I not been with someone who had been here before.
We went to the bar, ordered our drinks. Bartender had them back quickly. Asked us if we wanted food...we ordered..opened separate tabs and were given those vibrating pucks. From there we sat ourselves with our drinks at a booth. Once one of the pucks light up it's time to grab your food...inside you'll see the DJ booth and western swing doors. Drop your puck and grab your food at the countertop near the western swing doors. **(Condiments and napkins and forks are also in this area. You may have to return to this area if you need more napkins/knives/etc)**
Amazing food, amazing service just a learning curve if you haven't been here before. Also I noticed as soon as we were leaving the cover charge started and exits changed (like where I came in originally was blocked off). All I'm getting at is if you're a solo first timer maybe hit the bar first and just enjoy a drink and watch how this place operates. Glad I had a Royal American previous visitor with me.
The Royal American looks like and is a dive but DO NOT let that fool or deter you. Their food is off the hook fantastic, they have the basics but they also have elevated dishes as well. The have a soup of the week, different specials, and the staff meal of the week. I’ve eaten at TRA multiple times but this is my first time reviewing. This trip I got the Patty Melt Lance’s way. Without a doubt the best patty melt I’ve ever had. Trust me you can’t go wrong, just make sure that you have plenty of napkins. To top it off the draft beer is ice cold. If you don’t know, now you know!
The Royal has tuned into a regular on my rotation. I’m updating with the Red Plate Special. It was a spicy chicken sandwich which was made with roasted garlic mustard, coleslaw, spicy umami wing sauce, and Swiss cheese. It was phenomenally good. They have new specials every week and you should check them out!
I'm a dive bar guy. This is the ultimate. Quit looking. Awesome food, perfect decoration..in a warehouse next to train tracks.
I'm guessing some folks involved with this are proper culinary world refugees.
No t-shirts or other merchandise on offer. Great food, old comfortable furniture and a painting of Ernest Tubb.
What a great dive bar! Local music, great food and rockin' staff. Local hangout for sure. Mosquitoes are tough, so be prepared if they like you....
I enjoyed this meal, Philly cheesesteak had good flavor (comes with jalapeños on it). Steak was cooked well but man the potato skins were a delicious appetizer would definitely recommend. Also thought it was cool they serve RC cola instead of Pepsi or Coke products! Will definitely be back!
Great atmosphere. Awsome spot to grab a bite and listen to some live music. Huge outdoor deck with an awning covering all of their outside seating. Only complaint is the inside is a little crammed around the bar but it's an old Charleston building. If you know, you know. But if you can overlook that then I would high recommend.
So, our first time here. This is really a step (maybe a half step) above a dive bar. BUT, the food is GOOD. Very little seating indoors and it's loud, so next time I would go back when I could sit outside, I'd probably like that better.
We shared a pharmacy burger and the potato skins, both were so good, so it's definitely worth the trip. Next time, outside.
Definitely a dive bar. The bar itself is laid back when there isn’t a band. Good place for happy hour or weekend boozing. They have food specials constantly that are always really good. Don’t be scared by the looks of it, the put out really solid food. This picture is one of their specials that’s a chipotle chicken bowl. Worth stopping by and trying.
This has been on of my favorite dives for years!! The food is perfectly normal, nor frills just great American diner food! I can't even talk about the rum punch, if you know, you know.....but if ya don't know then get on over tonight!
We were sent here by a staff at husk for the recommendation of a patty melt. It was late and husk was closing and nowhere good left to get food. Was absolutely blown away at how delicious it was. The fries were perfect as well. Will definitely be adding it to my list.
