Our waiter was great and so was the food! My favorite was the bruschetta appritizer as the balsamic reduction was on point! Delicious!
Mondo’s is hands down the best Italian restaurant in the low country. Everything from the bread, to the wine, to the salad, to the eggplant to the martinis was perfect!
I do like this place because it is convenient to get to but I would not call it great or amazing Italian. It is ok. If you are not of Italian heritage or did not know god Italian food it will probably delight you. How to improve:
Better bread, less fat and oils in the cooking process, mussels would be better if not so much oil/butter or make believe butter, sauces are too heavy... I would call this Southern style Eyetalian food and it is tasty in some regards but not really Italian cuisine.
Best dinner. The mushroom raviolis and manicotti dinners. Don't let the strip mall area fool you. This restaurant compares to little Italy in Ny and Boston. Must try!
Consistent, great food, local, specials can be really really good (balsamic pork over polenta!). It is a go-to if I want to go somewhere that I know I'll enjoy.
Wine menu is more varied than some other Italian restaurant in that it offers wines from places other than Italy.
Service is reliable and smooth, even on nights when they are slammed. If you have to wait, take a seat at their inside or outdoor bars. You've glad you did.
Always good but also always crowded. Great pasta. Regular and special menu. Service attentive. Good wine and drinks. Atmosphere an added attraction.
Food was delicious so we will definitely be returning. Our problems were with the waitress who treated us like we were total Inconviences and the cheesecake is definitely pre made and Not very good. The food really is so good though.
This place is fantastic and we can't wait to go back! The mussels in garlic cream sauce app was memorable and something I can't wait to order again. The chicken parm and egglant parm were great. They have a really nice tomato-y sauce. For dessert we had gelato and a canoli. My husband raved over the canoli.
Overall, the prices are fair and moderate as well.
Food was amazing as usual but Colleen was a horrible server. Complaining to the table beside us and taking shots with the table beside us is unacceptable. I always tip 20% but she deserved a minimum 10%.
Worth the drive from Folly Beach! Everything was delicious on the menu. Great wine selection. Urbanspoon reviewers scored this place perfectly. Portbella appetizer was awesome. I wasn't exactly in the mood for eggplant Parmesan, but I ordered anyway based on the reviews. I cleaned my plate. Tiramisu was over-the-top! Yum, yum, yum! Best meal I had during my vacation. Say YES!
Fantastic. Great food which tasted homemade
Awesome food, the salmon was perfect!! The service--EVEN BETTER!!! Our server, David, was absolutely THE. BEST. EVER!! We will definitely be back!
Delicious Italian food! I loved the veal, pasta, sauce, meatballs and wine. It's difficult to find good Italian in Charleston and this place has found a way to do it. I will happily be back, it's worth the wait.
Came here on a whim when we got to Charleston, not expecting the restaurant to be packed to the brim at 7:30! The food was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced with generous portions, and the service was amazing as well. I would HIGHLY recommend coming here if you’re craving Italian in Charleston.
You need to eat the gorgonzola salad at Mondo's! This was my favorite dish of the night, but the gorgonzola cheese pasta with veal cutlets was also superb. The veal cutlet was perfectly cooked with a crisp crust. The special of the evening was a crab pasta that was buttery and flavorful. The focaccia was also very good and a nice start to the meal. Mondo's is first come first serve, so you may have to wait. Our waiter, Todd, was excellent. Also, the portions at this restaurant are large, so come hungry!
Having recently bought a house in Charleston, we went to Mondo’s Italian for the first time tonight at the suggestion of a local friend. I have this tradition at the end of a great meal, whenever possible, to express my gratitude to the Chef and Back of the house staff. The open kitchen at Mondo’s made this easier to do on a busy Saturday night.
Rick (our waiter) and Michelle (waitress in training) were both standing at the pass and I said that if I had to describe our meal at Mondo’s in one word it would be ….Salvation!
sal·va·tion
noun
preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss.
It was all that and more!
Our meal began with their wonderfully light and savory Focaccia Bread served with a dish of fruity Olive oil and a small ramekin of Grated Parmesan Cheese. I knew that I would need some of it for dipping during the meal so amazingly I was able to exercise restraint. If you find yourself in need of more, they have second (or third) rounds as a menu item at $6.00 Well worth it!
We ordered the Steamed Mussels and I appreciate the offering of several different flavor profiles. We chose the Roasted Garlic Cream sauce. I have a confession: when I order mussels at a restaurant it’s a bit self serving because my girlfriend is usually good for 3, maybe 4 of the small ones and I get to eat the rest….FYI, she ate almost half the bowl and proclaimed these mussels as the best she ever had! They were incredibly tender with absolutely no chew. The sauce was well balanced and light for a cream sauce.
For entrees, she ordered the Eggplant Parmesan , I’ll get to that in a minute, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the salad that came with it. Many Italian places give a salad with certain meals and it is notoriously a handful of Mesclun greens, some onions, and dressing. At Mondo’s they really go the extra mile on their included salad. Fresh mixed greens, mushrooms, zuchinni, tomatoes, Carrots sunflower seeds and a lovely Balsamic dressing in a very generous portion.
Back to the Eggplant…luscious, thicker than usual slices of eggplant layered with Spinach, cheese and their darn near perfect marinara sauce, baked Il Forno till the cheese is browned and the edges Carmelized and crisp. Again the portion was ample and we took half of it home.
I ordered the Pasta Aglio e Olio (Garlic with Oil) with the addition of Sautéed Shrimp.
Rick told me it was the Chef’s favorite so order it I did. It’s this Chef’s favorite now too! (Yes, I’m a retired Chef)
This dish was simply perfect!
After all that, we muscled our way through a piece of Flourless Chocolate Cake that came topped with whipped cream and Luxardo Cherries with their sauce. A perfect ending to a most amazing meal.
Being from NJ, I asked Rick to tell me who in the kitchen is from NJ“ because I would put this meal up against anything I’ve had back home. He replied “the owner is from NJ” I must say I wasn’t at all surprised.
Absolutely love this place! Locally owned and operated. Great service! Amazing dishes made from scratch pasta! Love the wine list and prices. Highly recommended!
The food was amazing. The hostess was rude. The service was great. Had the Seared salmon and parmeasean risotto and added salmon. It was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. Topped it off with an Italian amaretto martini. Yummy! It was loud busy atmosphere. I came in with a broken ankle with a scooter and I was able to have enough room to move around.
Get your taste buds ready, what an amazing place to have luscious, fresh and to boot: very generous portions of the very best Italian food.
I'm from New York, Italian food means a lot to me. So take it from me:
Great Italian food- go to Mondo's!
I had the Manicotti- loved it!!!
Going back this weekend. Gotta have either the spaghetti and meatballs or the Lasagna.
Too many great choices- gotta make the time and go there.
You'll thank me!
The focaccia was delicious as well and a great way to begin the meal. You might have to wait because Mondo's is first come, first served. Our server was very good. Additionally, this restaurant serves generous quantities, so arrive hungry!
This place is such a little gem! The food is really, really good. Everything made from scratch and it shows. I had the manicotti and it was so big I could only eat half of it! I don't eat salads, and when my boyfriends salad came out, it made me want to try a bite, it looked so pretty! Laura, the bartender, couldn't have been more of a sweetheart! I think I have found my new "normal"!
We eat here fairly often. The best Italian on James Island and one of the best in the greater Charleston area. No reservations so get here early or plan to wait a while. Limited outdoor seating but if the weather is good it’s very nice. Inside, it’s pretty tame decor but clean and well spaced. Not too loud when full but certainly not on the quiet side. Menu is fairly broad so there is something for everyone and the prices are reasonable considering the quality and quantity of food delivered. This is a very good restaurants and we give it 4.5 clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating Scale.
