No idea why this is rated so low. This place was awesome. The people running the store were kind, the food was good, and the price was affordable.
The only thing I would say could be improved is the wait time to get a table. When I went, there was only 5 other people in the restaurant, and the two kind ladies working at the time took about 10 minutes to get me seated.
Not a huge deal, I wasn't in a hurry or anything and they seemed busy with something in the kitchen so I don't take any points off for it, but I can see someone who's hungry being upset by the unclear wait time.

Good food at cheap price. Loved the dosas and the kuttu parathas. Perfect spice levels and fresh ingredients. The service was alright as well. They were really kind to us as we were students and gave us additional discounts too. Would go again when I wanna have Indian food

We were skeptical about the place before we got there, but were pleasantly surprised at the quality and authenticity of the South Indian food. Don't go here for the atmosphere, but if u are craving for authentic South Indian food around fisherman's wharf, then u should try this.

Delicious food and wide variety of indian food options to choose from. It was nice cozy setup and special mention to various photo collages of famous people from Tamil Nadu, India from various fields.
Giving one less star for the wait time and portion size as per the price.

The place is on a busy street and it’s busy most time went in for a late lunch. Turns out most of the items were not available on the menu except for madras masala dosa. Which was fairly good . While the Sambar and coconut chutney was really tasty the potato curry wasn’t so good. But overall a decent place to eat. The place has its pros and cons
Pros:
Decent food
Friendly staff
Quick service
Cons:
HYGIENE TAKES A BACK SEAT.
The overall place is shabby
The staff doesn’t wash hands between cleaning the tables and serving the customers.

Food was awesome, service was great, and location / atmosphere was awesome!!
I felt welcomed as soon as I stepped in. I had to order takeout for the family l, we were staying nearby. I was given good direction on spice profiles and flavors to be expected. Their Paratha's and butter chicken were unbelievably tasty!!!! I also tried a Shrimp curry - everything we had was delightful. My 2-year old and wife approved of the butter chicken!!!
Inside had an awesome vibe - and great movies playing :)

Having travelled extensively, I can say that Chennai Kings is the best Indian restaurant in the US. We have tried so many dishes from the menu but their goat biryani is to die for. Highly recommend, please make sure you visit Chennai Kings on your next visit to San Francisco.
Here are some photos of their biryani, mutton and fish curry, yummy!!

Nice seating though it may not look like that from the outside. Food was good. I liked their dal. Dosa was okay and the stuffing in it was a joke lol. Poori was extremely oily.

We had low expectations after looking at the reviews, but the food, service, and staff were great. My kids loved dosa and chutney. The service was pretty quick as well. The location was just a block away from Pier 39 garage.

Chennai Kings restaurant combines family-friendly, decent prices, a cozy ambiance, and attentive service. Opting for the Veg Biryani and Mushroom Masala. The biryani was well-spiced, and the inclusion of vegetables like cauliflower and beans added a delightful crunch. The portion size of the biryani could have been more generous. The Mushroom Masala, initially served on the drier side, was promptly adjusted to my preference when I requested it in gravy form. The staff's responsiveness and willingness to cater to individual tastes deserve commendation. Parking, although on the street, proved to be manageable, and there is an additional paid parking space in nearby for convenience..

So glad we chose to eat here. My kids are not the spicy type and don’t look forward to curry but so enjoyed the butter chicken which had a very different taste compared to what we normally order back home.
The layered Indian bread was also thorough enjoyed with The goat curry. I had the veg option which was yummy.
Service was good.

Were visiting from Florida. This restaurant was close by and after looking at reviews , decided to give it a try. Glad we did. All the items on the menu we ordered were very good and felt like home taste. Only here for tonight, but this is a must try restaurant !! Fast and friendly customer service is an icing on cake .

The food was good, especially the non veg dishes. The idlies were so so. Cannot expect better in a non veg restaurant. The chutneys were served straight from the refrigerator. Most restaurants do so in SF. But serve Tomato or red color fresh chutney along with a coconut or peanut chutney. Wish they serve atleast one fresh chutney instead of both chilled.
