First time trying Ethiopian and it was so so yum. Eating with hands is exciting too. The bread used to eat with is a tad sour tasting, so it through me at first, but it does complement the meal well. The lentils are nothing like I’ve ever tried or made, the spice blends are different in a good way. I also ordered a side of fries and honestly they were the best fries I’ve had, so there’s that too.

This restaurant has amazing food! Friendly service, culturally authentic dining experience with Ethiopian family serving and cooking the food. Ethiopian food is a lighter version of Indian meaning it’s like Indian food without the heavy cream. The food tastes great and actually healthy! Shame it is not popular, especially as the restaurant is located next to an overrated (always a long queue) Golden Boy Pizza. I will attach more photos soon as I seem to have lost some data from my phone (personal technical glitch)

Ethiopian food in San Francisco. This is possibly the best place I have found till now.
Their vegetarian and non-vegetarian platters are great value for money deals which come under 20 dollars each. Great to share amongst 2-3 people. The bread is unlimited portion with this so you can have enough. There will be three curries in a platter and you can mix and match from the menu choices of 7-1 items for vegetarian and non-vegetarian each.
My favorites amongst veg were lentils, zucchini , mushroom curries.

It's was my first time with Ethiopian food and what a wonder fun experience it was. The food reminded me of the dishes back home itvwas well cooked and the injera bread was a nice touch. The staff was incredibly friendly and the service was great. We chose the kelwa platter and got hummus as appetizer

Amazing. Can't believe this spot is in North Beach. I came in by myself and ordered the veggie and meat sampler (ha!) Figuring I would just take home leftovers. Then I ate it all because it was so darn good. And it it a TON of food. Lovely staff. Excellent food. Try the honey wine 🍯, which is slightly effervescent and pairs excellently. I will be back and encourage others to come support this place.
My one constructive point of feedback is that the lighting is quite garish (direct overhead spotlights). This detracts unnecessarily from the ambiance.

This was my fist ever experience about Ethiopian food and it turned out to be one of the best cuisines I have ever tried. The tender juicy meat and the spice was just perfect for our hungry tummy. Loved our food. The restaurant is a nice little cozy one. Decorated in traditional African accessories. I would love to go there again for my lunch. Great food at an affordable price.

Had dinner at this location and it was amazing. Brought my own wine from a napa valley tasting that went perfectly with the dishes. Definitely worth giving this restaurant a try.

We were suddenly hungry for Ethiopian food and we were very close to green street so decided to try Massawa!
It was fairly early for dinner being only 6:30pm so the place was quite empty when we walked in. The waitress was very friendly, welcoming and flexible with our requests. She came several times to our table to ask how the food was and if we needed extra injeera or something else. Bathrooms were clean which was nice. Their kitchen is open so it was lovely to see the chef in action preparing the food we ate. Loved their community tables. However, the overall interior decor was average, have seen better and more authentic in Berkeley and Oakland to be honest.
There was a lot of love put in the food. I guess that is always the case with Ethiopian food, so much love and strong flavors. Between the four of us we had a family size meat combo and family size veg combo and split a meat sambusa. Everything was delicious and we felt full but still light at the end of our meal. The only thing they do a bit different from other Ethiopian restaurants is that the meal is served on the plate directly rather than on top of injeera which I kind of prefer because the injeera gets soaked into the different flavors so tastes lovely like that.
The place is a bit expensive totalling to $23 per person after taxes and tips ($18 for meat combo for 1 person and $16 veg combo for 1 person) compared with other Ethiopian joints in Oakland or Berkeley but I guess you can expect that if you are eating in the heart of San Francisco.
