Great place to eat that is not expensive or pretentious. Dining room is not huge but there is plenty of outdoor seating for nice evenings. The Mac and cheese with the red hot riplet crust is to die for, seriously, so good. We had the famous chicken sandwich and were not disappointed. We will be back for more!
As if it weren't hard enough trying to pick one fried chicken place to go in the St. Louis area, Byrd & Barrel has certainly added some new flavor to the usual mix of quality fried bird around town. The chicken was definitely good, the hours are very good (though not as dramatic as originally billed), and the drive thru option adds a convenience factor that begs the question of why you'd ever consider a fast food option in lieu of it. What really wowed me the night we went however, was the service. Our server, Cody, has to be one of the best I've ever had. It was not terribly busy the night I visited, but she was congenial and ridiculously efficient...like the best I've ever seen. A water was spilled and within 30 seconds it was cleaned up with a fresh water on the table. She was helpful, never pushy, and the "check-ins" throughout the meal were ideal. Major props there, and certainly enough all around to bring me back for another round.
Came here not knowing what to expect. When you first see it you wonder how many people can actually fit inside (maybe that's why they also have a drive thru) but it's actually kind of cozy with it being small. Boyfriend and I split the wings (I also got the sweet honey chili dipping sauce and it was delicious) and the onion and chive beignets. First, the beignets were so good I hardly wanted to move on to the wings. They were soft and warm and melted in your mouth! The wings were great too! Smoked with a dry rub it's almost prepared like ribs rather then deep fried chicken wings. I would highly recommend this restaurant and can't wait to go back!
Months ago, Brazell (whose team includes former Gallianites Tommy “Salami” Andrews, Will “Tugboat” Volny, and Ryan “Ryan” Mcdonald) told me some of the ideas he was kicking around for his menu. The one that got my engine revved up right away was the South Side Poutine. B&B substitutes the fries typically seen in the dish with big tater tot balls, tasting like Waffle House hashbrowns that have been clumped together and deep fried. The balls are topped with tender smoked chicken, cheese curds, chicken (or mushroom) gravy, and chives.
My husband and I came here because one of our friends in Texas recommended it because he went to college with the owner. We thought it was just going to be a decent meal, we were wrong. It was awesome! Best chicken we have had, our waiter was awesome and the beer selection was good. Can’t wait to come back.
I got the chicken and waffles which was pretty good, but I tried a bite of my friend's Nashville sandwich, and it was such a blast of flavor I demanded more bites. Seriously amazing combination of ingredients. We also tried the cauliflower starter, and it was tasty too!
Friendly service, good food! This is a small place so thankfully we got there at a time it wasn’t busy. There is a drive thru area so that is a good option. I got the poboy and my husband got the Nashville sandwich. We got the poutine app as well. Both of our sandwiches were delicious. He said it wasn’t that spicy, but it had very good seasoning. The Byrd sauce is kind of a take on buffalo sauce and is good. Next time I would get an order of nugs as my side and skip fries or the poutine.
This place is incredible! The fried chicken nugz are the star of the show, but they also have a menu full of amazing side dishes ranging from veggies to poutine to sweets. What I love most is that the chicken is so flavorful and juicy that it can stand alone, but they do have a variety of sauces to choose from. Everything comes in large portions, so expect to get what you pay for. Service is extremely fast whether dining in or going through the drive-through. They do also have a drink menu (which includes the undisputed best Bloody Mary in St. Louis) if you choose to go that route. All-around, Byrd and Barrell is a huge token that shouldn't be overlooked!
Excellent fried chicken and nuggets. They also have great sides such as cauliflower, fried pickles and spiced tots. There's a variety of microbrews available and service is fast. It's a small place so larger groups might have issues getting accommodated, but they do have drive-through service. A new discovery that's quite worthy!
Outdoor seating available (city noise and traffic since it's off Jefferson), staff is nice, nugs are not what you would typically expect (and they have a dark meat option). The Nashville hot sandwich was good but a little greasy and def on spicier side, fried pickles weren't crispy but good seasoning and chip style. The boozy rosemary lemonade was great but I did have them sub out rosemary since normally the herb tastes like soap to me. But over all good experience and would come back.
I was in the area for business, so I decided to stop in at Byrd & Barrel for the first time. It was worth it. I ordered more food than I could eat at lunch, so I could try two different items.
The South Side Poutine with Mushroom Gravy and the white meat Nugs with Byrd Sauce and BBQ Sauce. The chicken Nugs were hot and juicy with a nice light breading. Very tasty. The Poutine with homemade tater tots was very good, and the mushroom gravy was flavorful. They make their sauces, and the two dipping sauces I chose were well done. I tried the 3 (small bottle) hot sauces, and they were also delicious. My server was polite, informative and efficient. He always made sure my water glass was full and checked on me as I ate. They have a large selection of canned beer available.
I took the leftovers home to reheat later on. I will return and recommend Byrd & Barrel for everyone. Located on Jefferson Street just south of Cherokee Street in STL.
Byrd & Barrel is one of my "happy places". When the mood strikes for delicious fried chicken, the Byrd is our regular go-to spot - and we're never disappointed. The savory beignets are a yummy, fluffy treat. Try the light and dark Nugz with Byrd sauce and the peppadew aioli. And please, do yourself a favor and order the J.I.T.B. tacos - they're seriously special. Amazing eats, a nice selection of beer and rotating cocktails, friendly service and a chill atmosphere make this one of my favorite places in STL.
I really enjoyed this restaurant. We sat outside for a casual business lunch on the patio. The food was creative and delicious. They have a drive thru window. The seating inside is limited. Service was friendly and prompt. They have a great beer list, including local craft favorites. Looking forward to my next visit.
Cozy dining spot. Had the Nashville Hot chicken sandwich and spiced tots. Fantastic food, great service, all at a reasonable price!
