If I could give more stars I would!! This is definitely a hidden gem in Richmond. If you like food this place is for you. I got the vegetarian moussaka & I must say I have NEVER had eggplant cooked to such perfection. Also got the tzatziki appetizer & the tzatziki is to die for!!!! The veggies were so fresh like I think they literally picked the arugula from the garden. My friend got the souvlaki chicken pita with the Greek potatoes. The chicken was so fresh & beautifully cooked & the potatoes were some of the best potatoes I’ve ever had in my life. Not to mention the server was extremely personable & friendly.

Recently started rediscovering this RVA classic. Such good Greek food here. Definitely won't be disappointed with the food. I had the souvlaki which was very flavorful and even better as leftovers the next day. The saganaki was also excellent. Unfortunately, during my last visit, the service was 🤦🏼. Our server rarely came back to check on us or refill water. One time I look over at her (after spending minutes looking around and trying to look "needy") and she's at the bar counting her tips and shoving them into her purse 🙃 Could that not wait until the end of your shift?! We weren't even that close to closing time! The other server who was behind the bar must've had x-ray vision because she looked right through us repeatedly. I've been here previously (recently) and the service was fine. That said, the reason I stopped going here 15yrs ago was due to the staff having a screaming match in the restaurant. My advice: go here on an off night when the place is empty and the servers aren't distracted. The quality of the food should make up for the flaky staff.

Superb restaurant for Greek food in RVA! I'm so glad my friend told me ro fo here. Josie was super friendly, like she was a friend from ten years ago we were reconnecting with. The food was delicious as well, very good juicy salad and chicken kabob was very filling and tasty. Thank you so much for providing high quality Greek food to the area!

Delicious Greek food in a cozy setting! Our second time at Athens Tavern, and it holds up. We got the spanakopita, pastichio, pasta #5 and chicken souvlaki and all were delicious. The server was so sweet and attentive despite having a lot of tables that she was attending to. In a town that has Stella’s, this competes for great Greek. Will definitely be back!

I am so pleased that Richmond has a Greek tavern/restaurant! I've recently come back from Greece (with friends) - so had to try out Athens Tavern...wow! The service and food was absolutely superb! We've ordered several hot appetisers, all were so lovely, cooked to perfection! Try the mushroom soup. We were served by a lovely young lady who was so attentive, warm & professional. The atmosphere is a typical tavern with Greek accessories and music. Seating was padded wooden benches, plain but not uncomfortable. Our meal was uneven in quality but with some high notes. Try the spanakopita and the soup- both excellent. The lamb was tender and flavorful but the scallops were a bit underdone and the feta topping too strong for the delicate flavor of the seafood. The wait staff was attentive and our iced tea was refilled promptly and the table cleared efficiently. Finally, the desserts were tasty and a happy end to a good meal. We will be back and hoping to find our visit as good or better next time.
