Laying claim to the "Best Pizza in Southeast Kansas"!!!. Greetings, everyone! I have worked as the GM at Gusano's in Joplin for 3 years now. I am very excited to be working in conjunction with our Pittsburg location. Several of you Pittsburg natives have come to visit us in Joplin, but for those who have never been, here's what you can expect:

We are renown for Chicago-style pizza, which is pretty different than a traditional pie (don't worry, we have those too, and they are delicious). Chicago-style starts with a deep dish crust--which is made from scratch like all of our dough--and begins with about twice the amount of cheese as a traditional pizza. We then stuff the pizza full of your favorite toppings, and put our homemade marinara sauce on top. All in all, it's about 2 inches thick of some of the best pizza you've ever had!

In addition to traditional and Chicago-style pizzas, we offer calzones, wraps, and salads, and dozens of sandwiches. I've had everything on the menu at least three times over and haven't encountered anything I haven't liked yet! Here are some of my personal suggestions:

--Chicken and spinach calzone
--The ""Dagwood" (sandwich with Italian beef, ham, turkey, provolone and cheddar, mayo and mustard)
--The Ditka (pepperoni, crumbled sausage, basil, and fresh jalapenos... try it Chicago-style)
--The "Dirty Bird" (pizza with our honey habanero sauce, chicken, pineapple, fresh jalapeno, and I like to substitute bacon for the onion)

Our Pitt location has several 52" tv's and even a few 70" inch televisions, perfect for the big game! We've got a great L-shaped bar, and some great food. Come see us!

Good pizza, not the absolute best I've ever had but it's definitely good. Service was good with the large party I was with. Drink specials also have a good price. Definitely would recommend over Domino's, pizza hut etc. Worth paying the extra for a good pizza, especially on game nights.

Food was hot and tasty, very filling. Upbeat enjoyable environment. Televisions all across the room, a great place to catch your favorite team play while having pizza and cold beverage. ...The only dislike, tables have a large base pad, preventing the ability to scoot the chair & yourself up to the table. Causing diners to lean forward to the table, not my style of eating. Good service overall.

Service here is usually toss up. But the food here is fantastic. Also very great beer selection. Not a good place for a quick bite to eat. Even the small pizzas take 10 + minutes to prepare. Large pizzas and calzones can easily be a 20-minute wait.

They were understaffed for the move-in weekend @ PSU. We had to wait to be seated for approximately 15-20 minutes. Tables didn't get bussed in time. Waitstaff was hustling to keep their heads above the surface. Our waitress may have been new: she was unfamiliar with the menu & drink items, she was slow to bring our drinks, she didn't bring them all @ once, & there were several minutes between each grouping of drinks, she was trying, though. Once we finally got our pizzas, we were pleased with them (or maybe so starved we were happy to see anything). The carnivore & the cheeseburger pizza were really good. I probably would have only given them a 2-star based on service, but the pizzas, drinks, & attempts were good. My son said the service experience was unusual.

Sometimes personal preference is hard to keep out of reviews. I want to like Gusano's, but I don't personally like their sauce. The pizza crust and ingredients are good, the service was good and it was clean. They have a pretty good Sunday special - one specialty pizza, one one-topping pizza and breadsticks for $25. We devoured the breadsticks and had pizza leftovers for two days! I think it's good, but at the end of the day...it's just a pizza place and everyone has their favorite pizza place, right?
