Review Hop Kee Restaurant - New York City

Wow. First time checking out this place. Starting with a nice hot tea. And ended with a fortune cookies. Two dishes I ordered was amazing. The service was quick and nice. They take only cash. Whatever you order they will give you free rice too. I will definitely go again. Absolutely great spot!!!!!

Bring Cash as they don't take credit cards. Came for the cantonese crabs. They are the best. My daughter got the chicken and broccoli. She loved the broccoli so much she took the chicken to go. lol. We will 100% eat here when we are back in NY.

Being Anthony Bourdain fans and knowing his down to earth love of all things food, we had to try one of his top five restaurants in New York, Hop-Kee. It’s located in a basement, and efficiently run by a crew of elderly Chinese gentleman. For years we have hungered for the Chinese food of our youth, as it disappeared under the wave of Kung pao this and Szechuan that. Well, it’s been here all along, carefully preserved by this wonderful Taiwanese restaurant! Taking his cues, we ordered from the dishes Anthony specifically mentioned. After all, we couldn’t disappoint him, because he was looking down on us from the 30 or 40 photos of his visits there. Wonton egg drop soup to start, which was absolutely amazing with a semi gelatinous broth, bits of yummy veg, and a surprising amount of wontons. We followed this with egg rolls, which were the size of a small burritos and stuffed with pork, tiny shrimp, cabbage, and yummy goodness that is imported from some mythical location, and probably kept in a safe in the back of the walk-in. For our main dish, it was the sweet and pungent pork (in the 60s and 70s in California would’ve called it sweet and sour pork.) What a delight! The pork was tender and breaded then fried to perfection then slathered with that tangy sauce. Bits of pineapple and pickle slices added just the right amount of bite to the mix. Stunningly delicious! The portion was so generous that we took leftovers with us, and had it for breakfast the next day. As our waiter brought us yet another pot of free tea, I shared with him that I felt like I was sitting in Pasadena with my grandmother and parents in 1969. It delighted him to no end 🙂 If you’re in New York and like old-school Chinese food, you absolutely have to go to this place. It is a cash only place, our dinner with tip, was under $50.

This is my favorite spot for Chinese food! I've been going for decades with my family. The dishes are authentic Cantonese and the serving sizes are large. Highly recommend.

Every time I visit new york never failed to drop by here fave place whenever I’m in the city. Still the best chinese food in town. See you next time. My fave is the steamed flounder with the black bean sauce.

Growing up in New York after the clubs . Hop Kee was the spot. Food is still amazing.. still only takes cash... But they close at 9pm. My regular go to menu.. salt and pepper pork chops, beef in oyster sauce over pan fried noodles, young chow fried rice. This time I added the salt and pepper squid...but If you're feeling adventurous I recommend the snails soo good.

My family has been coming here since before I was born. We love the staff and they are super friendly and helpful. We love the ribs, fried wontons, Peking pork chops and the beef fried rice. Cash only establishment! Would highly recommend this place. I

We love Hop Kee and visit every time we come to NY. It's fun to visit a restaurant open since 1968 with traditional American-Chinese food. Fast service, generous servings and good tasting food. Be aware - it's cash only.

We love going to Hop Lee (just across the street), but when they are closed we hop over to Hop Kee. They have a massive menu with you favorite southern chinese dishes. The hot and sour soup is great, as is the fried squid dish. The vegetable dishes usually have fresh veggies, adding to the flavor. It can be hard to get attention of the staff, and the ambience is "we are affordable."

We just found this restaurant on Friday night in a hurry, and the overall experience was okay. It had an interesting vibe downstairs the building, an old China town experience. We had fried rice, pepper stuffed shrimps, and lemon chicken with two beers and paid around 80 bucks, which was quite expensive considering that it was China town and was cash-only. The pepper shrimp can be quite spicy even as an Asian person who is strong with spicy food, but very addictive, and I’d also recommend lemon chicken if you like something sweet, but fried rice was not so impressive.

Definitely one of the top 3 restaurants that I will recommend around here. Really good Chinese taste place. Although cash only (reminder for ya,) prices were fairly enough! Not expensive. We had 5 ppl, 5 dishes, about $22 each, FYI. 🦀The way they cooked the crab was amazing! The sauce was made with grounded pork and egg. It tasted so good when you bite in the crab. 🦑The pickled cabbage fried with squid was another unique dish that I’ll totally recommend. Same, they did well when making flavors. 🦴The fried rib was the same. It looked plain but salty enough! Not that oily too. And green was for healthy but necessary!

Decent Cantonese fare at this Chinatown institution that’s been on my list for a while. I started with a bowl of their wonton soup which was average but things improved from there with a nice salt and pepper squid and their Singapore fried noodles, which was a regular on my lunchtime rotation in Hong Kong. Not the best I’ve had but about as good as any decent spot in Hong Kong.

Have heard this place for a long time. It is definitely a hidden gem in Chinatown. The pork rib and crab are amazing. Love the vintage vibe here!

Being Anthony Bourdain fans means having a restaurant bucket list and Hop Kee was on ours! We made sure to visit while on vacation in NYC and we were so glad we did. Absolutely delicious and generous portions. The hugest, most delicious egg rolls we've ever had. Delicious hot tea (hard to find places with all you can drink hot tea), and REAL food. We got the Hop Kee Chicken.
