Review Nyonya - New York City

Michele Pressley
I am a Malaysian so getting to taste authentic Malaysian food on my first trip to NYC was an awesome deal. Food was absolutely delicious, just as I was told. Hubby had the Nasilemak.. the rice was so so flavourful. I had the Prawn Mee.. the broth was so so flavourful. Got to taste a bit of what my friends ordered.. the Fish Head Beehoon was delicious, so was the Mee Siam, the Roti Tissue, the Lobak and the Satay. If only they ship to the midwest!! Haha! Awesome food. If you are Malaysian in NYC for the first time like me, you got to try Nonya!

Like some of the other posts have stated, this place is CASH ONLY. Waitresses were kind. Food was really good (spare ribs were my personal favorite). Atmosphere was chill when we first arrived but got super busy real quick because it was dinner hours. The only complaint of the service is the lack of napkins and lack of ice/lemon for the water.

If I wanted comfort food, this is the place to be. My usual is a Malaysian Sweet and Sour Pork lunch special that comes with jasmine rice and a chicken soup with some vegetables. I also order roti canai when I’m feeling extra hungry. The taste is close to home, the Philippines. For me, they’re the only ones that can do the sweet and sour dish some justice. My husband ordered chicken curry after asking a guy from the other table what he ordered. The people are kind, however the place is noisy — if that’s your deal breaker. They only accept CASH only. Toilets are decent. When you can, dine by the window. For me, it’s the best spot in the house. The team that runs the place has a knack of remembering people. And they always remember my order, my usual. If Benny is there, order the Milo! We love this place!

This is another must visit restaurant every time I’m New York. The first time we visited was in 2012 and the experience was amazing. Since then i always visit every time I’m in New York. The food quality and taste always hits the spot! When you come by do your self a favor and get the paratha roti and curry! The roti is so soft and the curry is so flavorful! My party ordered two and we devoted it before we touched our main dishes. For the main dishes I had the prawn mee it is a popular dish here and is a soup with a fish broth base. Super delicious and spicy just like I like it. My wife had the seafood Tom yam. And the broth was freaking amazing. In my opinion I would combine the spicy from the prawn mee and the flavors from the seafood Tom yam My bestie had the pad Thai with shrimp delicious as well. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit as much as possible. i must mention that this is a cash only restaurant.

My wife and I have been coming to this restaurant for 7 years now, and we've never been disappointed. The food is always delicious, the customer service is phenomenal, the restaurant is clean, and the prices are great. We've tried a variety of dishes on the menu, and everything we've had has been top-notch. Our favorites include the ginger duck, sesame chicken and the entries. The portions are generous, and the flavors are always spot-on. The service is always excellent. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive, and they're always happy to make recommendations.

Loved all the dishes here. The morning glory and the curry laksa were my favorite. Cash only.

Everything here is good, except maybe for the fact that you can settle your bill only in cash. Whenever my wife and I get a craving for Malaysian and Singaporean food, this is the place we go to in Chinatown.

It’s Cash only. The food was amazing, one of the best Malaysian places i have visited. The chili sauce that came with my hainanese chicken was not as good as ones I have had at other places but still ok. My friend ordered the beef curry which I have not tried before. The beef was so well cooked , not dry or though. We also ordered the Roti canai, thin, crispy and lightly sweet, goes well with the curry dipping sauce. Personally I like it just as is with out the sauce. It was pretty busy on a Tuesday night and the small tables near the front is a bit tight.

The beef rendang with the coconut rice is an elite combo. The seafood noodle dish alone i could kill a whole bowl. Very reliable place to come to. Comes fast and food is very affordable. I recommend coming with a bigger group and sharing everything. ALSO the roti kanai is crack.

I've been here a bunch of times, they're serving up some legit grub. If you're wondering what to try, go for the roti canai, the bean curd in casserole, and Hainanese Chicken.

This was our second time trying Malaysian food. This place has many options so we are not sure if we ordered the wrong things, but the food didn't stand up to the expectations. We got Poh piah - Steamed malasian spring rolls stuffed with shrimp, eggs, white turnip, dried onion

Nasi lemak - Coconut rice flavored with screwpine leaves with chilli, anchovies, pickles, curried chicken with hard boiled eggs. and Roti telur - Traditional Indian influenced pancake stuffed with eggs and onions. All the things were good but nothing exceptional or worth remembering.

Very authentic and hits the spot. Tried their curry noodles with yong tau foo and it is awesome, especially on a cold winter night. Would love to go back there again soon and try other dishes.

Nyonya is the bustling, busy and extremely popular Malaysian restaurant in Little Italy. Here they try to bring to the West authentic Nyonya style cooking which evolved as result of the intermarriages between Chinese immigrants and local Malays.

The food at Nyonya is good but the whole experience is all a little too mass for me. I feel Im missing out on the authentic nuances of the cuisine which I might experience at a place likeTaste Good.

All in all though, Nyonya makes for a decent experience with a few dishes that will keep you coming back for more.

One of the highlights of my time while living in NYC. Delicious, toothsome, spicy delights like beef rendang; crowd-pleaser nasi lemak; even the (to some) adventuresome Assam fish head curry fails to disappoint. It's become a "must visit" pilgrimage stop every time I visit.

They need to add more chicken on top of the rice. It was tasty nonetheless.

Shared a roti canai, nasi lemak and char kway teow. I really liked the roti canai, thin and cripsy. The other two dishes were good enough, but nothing special. There was no line when we went for dinner. I wouldn't go out of my way to get there, but it was a cheap and convenient meal.

So good!. Visited this place with 5 of my friends during our weekend New York getaway and is the best meal I can remember having in this city. Prices are good, food is flavourful and the place is cozy. Couldn't really ask for a better experience.

Expensive. Was there few time's but was just ok. The reason we go there because is close to us and miss our food from home. We think might just go to New Malaysia Restaurant which was slightly far from where we stay. Poor customer service.

Hunan Chicken,You ng tofu with broth is the best!. Authentic Hunan Chicken the steam rice and chicken were tender and come with variety of sauce this is my number one favorite. The young tofu soup with broth you can choose between clear broth or with curry soup is also my number one on the list ...

-----11 Jan, 2011-----

Hunan Chicken,You ng tofu with broth is the best!. Nyonya's ambience (and prices) are noticeably different from its old location across the street. The space seems cramped and uncomfortable. However, the food remains a delight. Standards like the naan (still buttery but not as crispy) with curry sauce (chicken pieces are absent, potatoes still present) remain their most popular item. The chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce are still terrific. Nasi lemak (curry chicken, chili anchovies, hard-boiled egg, pickled vegetables with coconut rice) is still a favorite of mine. The Hanainese chicken with rice is flavorful and fulfilling. I also enjoy the fish head soup with rice noodles. Of course, a meal is not complete without a tall cool glass of Malaysian iced tea.

Delicious!. Loved dinner at Nyonya the other night. Tried the pasembur (shredded cucumber, jicama and bean sprouts with tofu, shrimp pancake, jelly fish, ground peanut, dried onion, sliced hard-boiled egg, and "special sauce") and the masak lemak (beef sauteed with green and red peppers, onions, carrots, dried red chilies, and ginger in a spicy chili gravy). Both were fantastic; the pasembur was a huge portion for an appetizer and unlike anything I've ever had. Definitely picked upon the Chinese influence in the masak lemak, but this dish had more ginger and spice than most Chinese dishes. Atmosphere was great, too.

Very Pleasing Malasian Food. OK, I only went here because 26 other online reviewers told me to. That's the kind of guy I am - tell me what to do and I'll do it. Without question, I'm a virtual human robot! Well, I did not know exactly what to expect. I really didn't know if it was an Indian or a Chinese restaurant or what, but on a chilly December afternoon, I wandered in.

It wasn't crowded at all at 1:45PM on a Wednesday for lunch and I was seated immediately. I took the advice of my fellow online reviewers and ordered the Roti Canai and the Beef Rendang. Well thank God for the waitress because she asked if I wanted the "Beef Rendang" or the "Beef Rendang Rice". When I asked her what the difference was, she told me the "Beef Rendang" was a family style giant dish. Kudos to her, I would have been carrying around a load of leftovers all over Chinatown if she hadn't informed me!

So, I got the Roti Canai for an app. This looked like a darned dish-rag on a plate with some thick yellow soup along side to accompany it. Looks are VERY deceiving! This very special Indian style crepe is just about the best thing I've ever had at a restaurant, and it tasted great! Just enough curry chicken (the "thick soup") with which to soak up the all "not too thin" curry sauce with the roti, too! These guys know what they're doing.

For a main I got Beef Rendang Rice. I really did not know what to expect, but other reviews said to get this, so I did. When it came out, I thought, "Damn, big deal, some pulled pork and some white rice!", that's what it looked like. I was ready to ask for a bun and some slaw, and for them to pickle those cukes on the plate too so I could make me a Carolina BBQ sammitch.

Not necessary! As I ate this seemingly plain mish-mash of meat along side the white rice, the taste started to grow on me! And as much as I dislike the spices of cinnamon and cloves, the way they use these here will make you a true believer! As a bonus, I continued tasting this great curry on my tongue for the rest of the day.
I was really happy to see that Nyonya was affiliated with the restaurant, "Penang" here on my UWS and that the menu was practically identical, but GM Chrysler! - the prices up here at Penang are about three times that of Nyonya!

Think I'll spring for the subway round-trip to Nyonya if I want Malaysian food again. Reviews like this are why I HATE the freakin' UWS!

Finally Real Malaysian food. I recently went to te new nyonya restaurant in little italy and was pleasantly surprised to find that they actually had real maylasian food.. I am from Penang and i have searched for a good and reasonibly cheap malaysian food. I've been to maylasian restaurants where they only serve u chinese food...but at nyonya they have classic malasian food that is now only delicious but the potions are huge!!!!! The price is amazing i got 3 dishes for only 30$ amd the service cant be beat. my waiter was constantly refilling my glass and checking to see if there was anything that i needed... I highly recomend nyonya to everyone

OVERATED. We decided to dine at Nyonya because there was a long waiting line, and also there're so many plaques on its wall. BOY!!!
Roti Canai was stiff and chewy; Asam Laksa was too sour, Clay Pot Pearl Noodles Soup was so bland, House Special Jumbo Prawns was not fresh but the sauce was tasty. The only good dish was Satay Chicken.
I had much better Malaysian food in LA, maybe Nyonya is good enough in NYC, beats me!!!

Craving Hainan chicken but I ordered curry lee (my other favorite). Basically you can go wrong w/any food.

Favorite Malaysian Restaurant. Service usually leaves little to be desired but the food is always good. Some of the better hainanese chicken in Chinatown. Try the Sarang Burong which is a fried taro bowl filled with stir fry chicken, veggies, etc. The Indian Pancake with the curry chicken dipping sauce is always good. And get the chendol ice for dessert!

The accompanying chicken curry has a good flavor and is thick and spicy...Bak Kut Teh...This bak kut teh was bland. The meat was tender but lacked the flavor of a proper bak kut teh.
I Just Want To Eat
I have tried their chicken curry with pickled vegetables and it was fantastic, a bit spicy, but so good, the pickles adding a refreshing part to the dish.

Did not like the food the day I went. I went there because it was on the Michelin Bib Gourmands for 2012...

I really liked this dish. The roti was soft and there was just enough egg and onion inside. The curry was tasty too, the two were perfect together.
Eat. Nosh. Nom.
This place was awesome and is one of our regular favorites. For solid Malaysian food, come check this place out now!

I ordered the roti canai to get those Malaysian flavors and spicies going in my mouth. But, what I was really waiting for was the Hokkien Char Mee. It’s a plate of big chewy egg noodles stir fried in soy sauce with pork – greasy but is so good.

I probably should have developed this habit from the very beginning, but I’ve just started to consistently google the phrase “national dish of (enter country name here)” before heading out to restaurants. In the past, this has led me to some beautiful mea

Walk into Nyonya‘s new, modern location on Grand Street and you are greeted by fragrant aromas of ginger, kaffir leaves, tamarind, curry, and lemongrass. Your stomach growls with desire.

After nearly 10 months of eating too much bland food in Colombia. We were in the need for some spice. As we were in New York, and staying in China Town. Why not have some good Asian food with some spice. For some reason the restaurants in China Town did n

Hokkien Char Mee- thick udon like noodles in dark soy sauce stir fried with beef, chicken, rather ok…but somehow I couldn’t help but think this was a “Malaysian Chinese” dish in the way chop suey is a “American Chinese” dish if you know what I mean…

A while back, I wrote about Nyonya in Brooklyn , which prompted many people to comment that I should plan to go to the one in Chinatown for comparison's sake… and invite all of them along. Due to schedules shifting etc., we wound up with just TT, Gary and DLS joining me, but it was plenty as the place was pretty crowded on a Friday evening. We waited about 10-15 minutes for a table, but luckily, it wasn't too cold that night so waiting outside wasn't painful. When I saw Malaysian iced tea on the menu, I had to order it, as I've ordered Thai iced tea at Malaysian places to have them correct me… and then bring me Thai iced tea anyway. This begat a long discussion about the differences in the two, until mine appeared and I scowled. Thai iced tea is orange, and this was definitely not the same… and drinking it was just iced tea. Boo. Roti canai was dispatched rather quickly, and I found it tasty enough - not above or below what I expected it to be. Chewy crepe with a curry dipping sa
