Review Tomoe Sushi - New York City

Zeynep Gumus
It’s my second time visiting Tomo21. The first visit was great, from the service to the freshness of the sushi – all superb. They also serve complimentary hot green tea if you ask, which is a plus for me since I like to drink hot green tea with my sushi. On the second visit, I ordered the sushi dinner deluxe and was kind of disappointed because I didn’t see much difference compared to the regular sushi dinner, which I believe was better. Also, my server made me ask four times for tea, and the restaurant was empty, so I was quite surprised. But overall, it was a good experience with nice people, good sushi, and affordable prices.

These were one of the best fishes I've ever had in my life. So fresh, so clean, so good 😌 I went in after peak dinner time around 7pm & ate without waiting.

Good spot for decent sushi. Good spot for a more affordable sushi in that area. Is it the best? No. But a good affordable option.

I dined in for lunch. It’s a casual sushi spot with fresh fish. I ordered the sushi lunch and mental ika roll. Both were delicious and good quality for the price.

Last time I went to tomo sushi was 5 years ago. I had very good memories however my experience this time didn’t meet the expectations. The salmon skin was the only roll I actually that that was good

Hole in the wall type place with overall fresh food but nothing too exciting. The salmon and tuna rolls are not one chunk like everywhere else but rather GROUND. Pay attention!

I came here for lunch! The food was really good quality and fresh. The service was nice, not anything super exceptional, but I think we were treated nicely and received good attention. The prices are also quite fair for the freshness of the sushi that you get. Has a nice-casual atmosphere. It is probably a nice place to go if you want sushi that’s not too expensive around NYU.

I’m in love with this place. It is the hands down best sushi place in Nyc. Amazing fish quality, amazing prices. They have very wide menu as well. Very small and cozy place. My favorite sushi place after all. Highly recommend! 🍣

I don't have to comment on its sashimi and sushi, as they are very famous. Beside the raw fishes, their cooked food are also outstanding.

Highly recommend this little sushi bar! From the first bite, you can tell they use the best fish with quality ingredients. Skilled chefs and lovely serving staff. Grab the sushi lunch special for a taste of everything.

This is not my first time here and it's definitely not my last time. I ordered the chutoro, otoro, toro, eel, salmon, scallops, Japanese uni, and fried oysters. Any sushi restaurant that serves chutoro, otoro, and uni is already on a different standard. Nevertheless, this spot is elevated into its own category. The last time I had this quality of sushi was at the Tsukiji fish market. Everything served here is SO FRESH. The place is pricy, but the quality is worth the cost.

so far this has been the best fish i’ve ever put in my mouth. they all just melt like buttaa. i come for lunch special bc it is on pricey side. fish is great even the tuna was good. i usually don’t like it bc it’s very fishy and just taste like it went bad. but not a fan of the raw squid, but definitely looks fresh super white! the miso soup is okay, you can skip that and salad is just ok, white rice is just ok too but the fish is the star! calamari is yummy, some days better than the other. i like it when there’s more of the meat than to the batter, my friend likes it the opposite. comes w spicy mayo too! yippee yummy. service is alright sometimes it takes a while for them to notice you, but i am shy so i just wait. the food does come out fairly quickly though. their selling point to me has to be FREE hot tea. (some places in the city charge for it which makes me so sad)

I was the first one to arrive 5pm for a dinner opening and was surprised to see they didn’t clean up after lunch time. My cucumber salad was not made of fresh cucumbers. Butter salmon was overcooked. 3,5 stars for food 1 star for cleanliness Service 5 stars as always

I love sushi but I haven’t tried this hidden gem so far. This place is not too big but we were able to sit down immediately. I ordered ramen soup my friend ordered the sushi - sashimi deluxe plate which came with the miso soup. The soup was ok. The ramen was soooo delicious and was big. The sushi /fish slices were super fresh and were big portions. The staff was so friendly and polite. I’ll definitely come back to try more dishes here.

The sushi deluxe is spectacular, such a good value and everything was fresh and delicious. If you don’t like wasabi, make sure to ask to leave it out. Highly recommended!

Wow, this place is a hidden gem!! I had it with my friend from Tokyo and they said it was the best sushi in NY that they’ve ever had. The fried calamari was soooo good, and the sushi deluxe had a great variety of sushi for an affordable price. The sushi itself was fresh and flavorful, so much umami packed into each bite. Melt in your mouth deliciousness for quite generous sizes.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant of all time. The fish was fresh. Service was the perfect balance between friendly and attentive and space for conversation. The snow crab California roll and the green tea ice cream were beyond delicious. AND they accommodated my gluten free needs. Best dinner recently.

I don’t want to be that annoying person but I have been to my share of omakases and been to Japan twice. I don’t see any value in paying an arm and leg for sushi and a lot places are overrated anyway (like nakazawa). This place is by far the best and most authentic experience you would get in the city for your money. I came here unassumingly and I was not disappointed. The regular sashimi plate gives you so much fish I left feeling beyond full. Everything was good, and I mean everything. I even really liked the squid which I’m usually indifferent to. I especially enjoyed the scallop. I also got the kinoko soup which was great and it was a meal in itself. When I come back I will be sure to get here at an odd hour because the line was already out the door by the time I left.
