A great option for lunch, or a coffee break (5/5 green stars)
Even though there are a good number of places to eat in Mendocino, we ended up coming here twice (once for lunch and once for a coffee & pastry) – it’s the kind of place you’ll want to return to. Even when busy the staff members were friendly and welcoming. We collectively drooled over the new cookie that they’d brought out – a salted chocolate concoction that tasted as excellent as it looked. They make very good espressos, very good pastries, and also have some inventive savory items. Our Korean noodle salad was super-good. The veggie cake sounded better than it tasted but I think that was partly because I chose the wrong side (sour cream) and it ended up being a little bland – or it would be better if crisped up a bit before serving. Overall, it was a satisfying, healthy and affordable lunch ($5 for the noodle salad, $4.50 for the veggie cake and $3 for the cup of soup – kale and black eyed peas) made by people who cares about their ingredients.
I’m also giving them 5/5 “green stars” for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons:
• Their coffee beans are from local roaster, Thanksgiving (all fair trade and organic).
• They use Clover milk and also have alternatives such as soy, coconut and even oat or hemp.
• Good selection of vegetarian and vegan items (now including occasional vegan pastries).
(Thanks to Jessika L. for sussing out the hemp milk and vegan pastry situation.)
• For baking, they use organic flours and seasonal fruits.
• They also use free-range eggs.
• Many ingredients such as beans, rice and tofu are organic. Much is locally sourced.
• They encourage waste reduction.
• They appear to treat their staff like family – appropriate for a place like Mencocino.
• They provide an outlet for local artists (great selection of ceramics for sale).

I live in Chicago, but whenever I visit Mendocino I always enjoy going to GoodLife Cafe and Bakery. Their coffee is always perfect. Many different blends to choose from if you aren’t getting a specialty coffee. My favorite item at GoodLife are their Cowboy cookies. Always a best selling item. There isn’t a cookie in Chicago that compares to the Cowboy cookie. Friendly staff, always busy because the food is delicious. I highly recommend GoodLife Cafe & Bakery.
Great local coffee shop with good breakfast. Cute local option along with Moody's Coffee. The breakfast burrito is a good option to have while walking around town.
Great cappuccino! One of the best ones in the town
Eggs Benedict is my recommendation if you're here for brunch. Eggs were poached perfectly and their hollandaise sauce is creamy and tasty. Biscuits are house made too and are crispy. Also ordered seasonal roasted veggies with rice and tofu stir fry. That was also well seasoned particularly the tofu.
They can customize the dishes to your preference and some dishes have suggestions too.
Their house sourdough is soft and delicious with butter.
The ambience in the cafe is lively and sometimes it gets crowded. There are a lot of colorful paintings on the walls. Staff is warm and friendly.
This cute place in Mendocino serves really good breakfast with great service. It seems to be popular with the locals and tourists alike. I ordered eggs benedict and my husband ordered biscuits and gravy (it comes with an egg and the combination works well together!) The mocha and salted caramel latte are also quite good. They have crafts made by local artists that they sell at the restaurant (nice touch). And despite how busy it is, the workers have good attitudes and offered good service. Well recommended.
Absolutely fantastic. Better beet soup than I make. Chris at the cashier’s table allowed me to try two different soups. Our meals were fresh and so unusual. An incredible selection of desserts. Loved the cold pressed juices.
You really can’t go wrong here. It’s such a solid restaurant. The baked goods are tops— even just a drip coffee tastes so delicious here (Black Oak Roasters). The prices are reasonable for what you get. There are even some bargains on the menu, like homemade toast with jam & butter for three bucks. Omelettes are super, good potatoes. It’s nice to sit outside because of the lovely air. Have a great time!
Note: the lineup can be long. One way you can speed things up as to call your order in and pay in advance over the phone.
We went here for brunch. There’s a long line, we had to wait for about 20mins. We had vegetable stir fry, French toast and hot chocolate. I loved the dressing of vegetable stir fry. The fresh toast was perfect and hot chocolate was delicious (def recommend). Overall really nice place with good food and great ambiance. They have both indoor and outdoor seating.
Cute café in town. They should open a bit earlier for breakfast as there is a line. First impression was a little rough as we were scolded and told to wait outside and form the line. You order and then take a number and sit down.
Honestly, once we ordered, service was friendly and the selection was great. Many pastries and breakfast items to choose from. They do charge a gratuity for every order.
We had steelhead Benedict, steel cut oatmeal, eggs, and pastry’s. The croissant was excellent. All food was very good and we will go back tomorrow!
Tiny little restaurant with great variety and great quality food! They serve food from both breakfast and lunch menu. One of the best cappuccinos I've had!
Cool coastal joint for breakfast. Good crowds on a weekday in this delightful small town. They have outdoor seating as well. Nice, hard-working staff. Worth the price for a delicious breakfast burrito. Then you walk outside, look left down the street and enjoy the views of the Pacific.
The coffees were good - on par with the best coffee shops we found along NorCal coast.
Lines and tourist crowds do not add to the charm. But do not ruin it either.
(Other commenters complaints about 15% surcharge seem senseless to me - this is much nicer than shaming a customer into paying a tip before service delivered as done but all places that use square’s payment tablet)
A warm and inviting cafe with a great range of cakes and food to enjoy with the best coffee in Mendocino. Staff are amazing.
