Our new favorite Mexican place! Our server, Abby, was attentive and helpful, courteous and friendly and made our visit enjoyable. The food was delicious! Carne asada fajitas were divine and my husband's shredded chicken dish, marinated and tender. We loved the unusual margaritas (pineapple and cilantro and strawberry n mint) My only complaint was they had a bit too much ice. The food is fresh and flavorful and atmosphere bright and charming. We will be back.

Love, love, LOVE this place!! Great food, some of the best frozen margaritas I've ever had (they don't scrimp on the tequila even though the frozen margaritas come out of a machine!) and good atmosphere in downtown Lafayette. The prices are pretty good, especially considering the quality of the ingredients and the location. I HIGHLY recommend La Carreta!!

We've gone to La Carreta quite a few times and we typically enjoy it. Service can be spotty with staff sometimes to focused on chatting with each other rather than checking up on their tables. My favorite thing to order is the Mahi-shrimp ceviche which is very good. They have bite sized pieces of fish and shrimp with pieces of cucumber and mango marinated in lemon juice so the acid "cooks" the seafood. It makes a light and refreshing meal. The rest of the food I've found to be a little hit or miss with the meat being dry and bland at times. In my opinion it is your best Tex-mex option downtown.

We hit it up La Carreta for lunch today.  I had only been here once, shortly after they opened, and I do remember it being very good. Today, our service was good.  We had a very large group (10 people), and a couple of orders got messed up, but they were quickly taken care of, and everyone left happy. As for the food, I forgot how much I like the salsa here.  It has a smokey flavor to it that I really, really like.  Not too chunky either.  I'm a fan of a smoother salsa.  I got the avocado salad (no tomato), and it was terrific!  I added shrimp and they were perfectly cooked and spiced.  I'm looking forward to going back in the evening soon so I can try one of their margaritas. All in all, I'll be making this my downtown Mexican spot from now on.

For appetizers, La Carreta offers a variety of dips, such as guacamole that can be made fresh right at the table, spinach & artichoke, chorizo queso, and bean, as well as nachos, shrimp, ceviche, calamari, quesadillas, flautas, and an assortment of flavorful soups. The tacos are made with corn tortillas with onions and cilantro, along with bean soup and grilled Serrano peppers, and can be filled with anything from braised beef to Boston butt pork, Mahi Mahi, shrimp, lobster, and a local favorite, the Tacos al Pastor -- pulled pork with chipotle and pineapple.

My wife and I recently tried this place for lunch on
a weekday.  We arrived when they opened at 11:00am.

Overall, I'd have to say that it was well-above-average
and I would have no problem recommending this place to
my friends when asked about local Mexican food joints.

The good:
--------
The establishment is clean.  nice decor.  comfy.
good service.  tasty food served hot.

The bad:
-------
If you're going to serve an item covered with some type
of sauce, then your menu should clearly state so.  My
chile relleno was swimming in ranchero sauce, which was
quite a surprise being that there was no mention made of
said sauce in the menu.  Also, when I ordered, the waiter
asked me if I wanted it stuffed with shrimp or cheese.
Once again, a surprise being that only cheese was on the menu.

The ugly:
--------
This place doesn't appear to have any management...  or
perhaps the waitstaff have just grown so "comfortable" working
there that they don't pay attention anymore.  Whenever you
have four or five people crowded around the hostess stand
"shooting the breeze," well, to me that says "this isn't a
very well run place."

Salsa is the signature item at many Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurants.
Not at this place.

By the numbers:
--------------
Overall - 4/5.
well-above-average, especially downtown where the competition
amongst food providers can be pretty intense.

Food - 4/5.
very tasty. salad had very fresh ingredients. nice presentation.
food looked and smelled appetizing. chile relleno was well
prepared and very flavorful. there was obviously not only good
recipe, but good technique here as well.
(please see "The Ugly" for my comments about the salsa here.)

Service - 4/5.
seated quickly. very attentive. polite. friendly. quick.
food arrived hot in a timely manner.

Atmosphere - 4/5.
pleasant. cool. fresh air. colorful. inviting. relaxing.
TV/music not so loud as to interfere with conversations.

Misc:
----
Here's a note to Hannah, the young lady who waited on us.
Please consider dropping the word "absolutely" from your
vocabularly. Older folks, like me, occasionally want to hear
"yes, sir" or "no, maam" in response to their questions.

also, when you approach the table with the check, and the
gentleman has his wallet on the table with a credit card
sitting on top of it, this means that he is ready to go.
instead of dropping the check on the table and then running
over to chitchat with your coworkers for a few minutes, you
should wait by the table for thirty seconds, and then take
the bill/credit card to be processed.

All the ingredients are super fresh. Amazing margaritas! The chips and salsa are average but they're complimentary. The Mahi Mahi tacos were awesome!

Not sure why there's negative reviews. Made our first visit for dinner on a Wednesday night. I was a little hesitant choosing La Carreta based on some of the negative reviews, but luckily I decided to try it anyway. The negative reviews appear to be related to food quality/taste, but none of the four people in my party had any complaints about the food or the service. As a bonus I got away spending less than $100, including my 20% tip and three margaritas. I would not hesitate to make a second visit, and I would recommend everyone should give La Carreta a try..

La carreta has has hands down become my favorite restaurant in Lafayette. I can't find better salsa or better margaritas anywhere. The service is outstanding and it is an all around great environment. I also heard that they are coming out with a new menu on April 7, which I am beyond excited about. If you haven't been to la carreta yet, you owe it to yourself to try it out!

This place is consistently good... I've probably tried half the menu items by now. Always fresh, always yummy. Service is great - I once came in for lunch with only 30 mins on my lunch break and I was served and out the door with five mins to spare. I wish they had more authentic Mexican dishes but what can you expect from Tex-Mex in a small Southern town. The dish pictured is barbacoa tacos - delicious! The refried beans have a nice spicy kick to them.

4.75 ⭐️ ¡Me encanta un poco de comida mexicana! (We decided to try La Carreta, which means "The Road" in English. This place is nice and comfy. I was excited about the outside/inside patio area when entering. I did not go past the doors into the main entrance. I noticed the calming music, not too loud nor rowdy. The music gave me the feeling that the station was in English. I assumed the genre would have been Soft Rock. I appreciate a great waiter/waitress. One who is well-groomed with visibly clean hands and uniforms, confident when approaching our table, and has a genuine smile. A great service is set apart by being knowledgeable about the menu items and offering suggestions to help make the best choices. A server who upsells understands how to increase revenue. A great server allows time to decide and checks with us frequently; nevertheless, the server should not forget about her tables, nor should one be nagging and lingering. We were fortunate to have immediately encountered this type of service from a young lady who fits the profile aforementioned. I am sorry to have forgotten her name. I will always remember her beautiful smile coupled with the confidence she wore. ¡Excelente servicio, La Carreta La Carreta! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Would you go out for Mexican and not order a margarita? I surely would not! Besides, YES, YOU DO WANT A MARGARITA from here! They were not too strong but not cheap tasting! I only enjoyed one because it was lunchtime. My husband and I recently moved to Breaux Bridge, and we have been looking for an authentic and sophisticated Mexican restaurant. We found it at La Carreta. We have now been twice, and both times the food and service were EXCELLENT. To use my husband’s comment … “Superb!” And it was. This will be our go-to for Mexican food in the Lafayette area.

Service was fair. Server needs to wear pants that do not show too much. Food ok but not as expected. Tortillas for my wife's beef fajitas were greasy and stuck together. We asked for replacement and request was quickly fulfilled. My chicken quesadilla was made with baked chicken not the expected grilled chicken also no grilled veggies just meat, cheese, and tortilla also a bit bland. Salsa was excellent with just right amount of spiciness. Guacamole was made with small pieces of avocado and was not spiced - a bit bland - cilantro would have been a good addition.

this is our favorite go to spot for mexican food, relatively easy to park (for downtown), staff are always nice, and food is good and consistent, not the best mexican I have ever had but we have never left dissapointed. The only true complaint i would have is because the bathrooms. they are awful with the ceilings falling down, and my wife says the same for the womens. they have needed repairs for a long time.

Really nicely setup restaurant. I was driving from FL to TX and stopped at this place to grab a bite. Very friendly environment and staff. Street tacos were really tasty. And their prices are pretty reasonable. The only issue might be is finding a parking space if you're driving. Other than that, I would definitely go back there again to try their other dishes. Maybe one day again I'll be able to repeat this stop. 😀
