Sushi Bistro Shun

Sushi Bistro has been my sushi bar of choice for my two and a half years living in Hawaii. Upon walking in my first time I knew I was in a place that was authentic. As a hapa I was greeted with the language of Japanese in the air. Sushi chef Benkey definitely carries weight in this establishment. With out his energy and pleasantries, Sushi Bistro would be lacking something in the atmosphere of the place. Benkey will take care of his customers and always makes one feel welcomed. The staff is courteous as well. The overall feel of the place is cozy. I like the option of the side room in which you can reserve, just remember to take off your shoes. It is not a large establishment but it has enough room for a party of six to eight maybe ten. I come here for my sushi. The ahi is of a good cut and the unagi is killer with a portion you would not find on the mainland. Benkey's experience shows in his presentation and his choices and options that are not featured on the menu. If you feel adventurous, develop some repertoire and ask him to make some sushi for you. He'll be happy to show you something new. The menu is not limited to just sushi. There is a full kitchen with a very Japanese menu, meaning you will want to know your dishes if you're not adventurous enough to try some of the items. Safe bets are always the miso soup, udon, shrimp/assorted/vegetable tempura, and the tonkatsu (pork cutlet) are staples.
