The meal and service at Moon and Turtle was great. We made a reservation in advance and ordered virtually everything on the menu. I particularly enjoyed the beef shank campanelle pasta, Smokey sashimi in Kiawe-smoked soy, and the garlic butter ahi belly. I wasn’t taken by the local abalone or the panko-crusted ono, but glad I tried. Definitely one of the better restaurants in the area - and for good reason. Will be back to sample the rotating menu when I come back!
Dinner at Moon & Turtle was everything we'd been looking for on the Big Island! We'd been remarking on how we hadn't really had any food that was memorable - everything's been fine, but just fine, and some of it pretty touristy. Moon & Turtle blew everything else out of the water. The small menu changes daily, and the food and drinks were incredibly inventive. I was worried about not being able to find a menu online since I'm veggie, but called and they said they had plenty of veggie options and are always willing to adjust dishes as necessary for dietary constraints, too. The food was delicious and inventive, as were the drinks. Best meal of our whole trip! Call for reservations, it's a small place and they fill up fast.
We were looking for really good food and vibes - and found it here! We were in Hilo for 3 nights - and ate at Moon and Turtle twice. It's exceptional - from the courteous, accommodating and fun staff, to the talented bartender and chefs. Sit at the bar if you can to see how a well run restaurant operates. It was amazing to watch every person constantly in motion, smiling and juggling tasks. The food is fresh, fantastic and looks and tastes great. Even the leftovers are plated beautifully.
One of the best places in not just Hilo but the whole island. Really great good with excellent service with reasonable prices. Do book reservation.
The best meal we had on the Big Island! Their dishes are served family style in small or large portions. The food and drinks were delicious, especially dessert! The staff was welcoming, friendly, and very accommodating to food allergies.
I almost hate to post how fantastic this place is. If you go, please be the best kind of patron and respect the amazing creativity of the chef and owners. The menu changes based on seasonality. It.is served family style (if there are only two eating you will have left.overs). The food is amazing, fresh, and creative. The cocktails are some of the best, most creative (without being precious or too hipsterish) that I've had in a decade. Since the soursop was in season, the Sop Drop and Roll was the most amazing way to have tequila and smell like a rose. Their take on a French 75 was perfect. This is a gem of a restaurant. If you don't have a good experience here, it is not the proprietors, waitstaff, or chef's fault. Go see a therapist for your issues.
More than five stars. The service was incredible; the waitress knew the menu inside and out and was attentive and friendly. The food was insane. Every single bite, from the salad to the brussels to the fish, was just LOADED with flavor. It was impossible not to take the table for a long evening to savor every bite. Even the Irish coffee at the end was mind-blowingly flavorful! Make a reservation well in advance and enjoy every second of it.
One of Hilo's best. Highly recommend. Food and staff are top notch.
