I was heading home from OBX, and wanted a quick meal that wasn't the same old ordinary...found Hwy 55 on Google maps, and figured I'd give it a try. This place looks so innocuous and rather bland from outside, but the inside is an explosion of 50s era diner nostalgia! I missed the decade by about 25 years, but there was a great vintage feel...the staff was quick and efficient; the cashier lady was helpful and friendly.
I ordered a Shrimp Burger, a Pimento Bacon Burger, and onion rings...the food came quickly (but not in a "been under the heatlamp for an hour" way), and it was perfectly cooked; delicious and filling!
They have a pretty large menu, and the flatop grill and fryers are right behind the counter, in view of the customers.
While it is well lit and looked pretty clean, it does appear to be an older building, in need of some renovations; but overall I enjoyed my experience, and will likely return next time I'm in the area.
Food was delicious! The price could not be beat… especially after coming from the coast. Very friendly service. Don’t judge this book by its cover.

We went there again tonight (12/6) and got awesome food, bacon cheeseburger, fries and one of the best chocolate shakes in this part of NC. However our last visit couple months ago was disappointing, I think it mainly depends on who is working. Today was delicious and exactly what you would expect from a burger place. Please keep those employees from today!!!
Shrimp poboy was huge and full of shrimp. Great taste and fair price for the amount of food. Servers were friendly. Wife said the 6 piece was more than enough to split and taste good.

The service was great, and seeing how this was my first visit to a Highway 55 restaurant, I really liked all the 1950's decorations inside!
Stopped here on a whim and glad we did. They were out of so many things it was almost comical but what they did have was very good especially the chicken cheese steak, the best my husband said he had ever had!! The pimento cheese and orange aid was very good and although the hot dog looked dehydrated, it was really tasty. We will definitely be back👍👍
Located right next to the speedway
The food was sooooo delicious! I LOVE the fact they have a John Boy and Billy burger! I use to eat the John Boy and Billy sauce on everything as a kid! Shrimp PoBoy was amazing also! There was a wait for our food but it came out HOT !!
The burgers were good. We showed it up with 27 in our party, and they served us in good time. While we were there, four other tables were also served. All of the staff were pleasant and did their best to satisfy all their guests.
Great hamburgers, fries and sweet tea! One of the last places to eat for a while, if you are leaving The Outer Banks. The service was good and timely. It wasn’t very busy when we stopped by.
