Review Woo Chon Restaurant - Chicago

Ninah Thao
Went for galbi and was not disappointed! Woo Chon is on the more expensive side but it tasted great! Ordered two servings for two, and it was a good amount for us - since we had also ordered cold noodles and bibimbap. It didn't seem too busy when we arrived so service was quick! Will definitely visit this place again!

One of the few places left in the city that uses charcoal instead of gas for Korean BBQ. Great cuts of meat, nice array of side dishes, and great service. It is located just off the intersection of Lincoln Avenue & California Avenue and, given its small size, you could blink and miss it. But if you manage to find it, the place is absolutely worthwhile.

We enjoyed our meal there but I have to say it’s quite expensive especially if you are meat lovers. I’m giving four stars only because it’s too expensive. We liked every dish we have. The Galbi is our favorite. The meat quality is one of the best we have had in Chicago. It’s really juicy and tender. The bibimbap and tofu soup are also really good.

The owners are amazing! The service, the food, the overall experience. I just love it here!

This place has the best galbi tang! The bbq is grilled on top of charcoal. The side dishes were delicious! This place also has a small parking lot. I highly recommend.

I enjoyed this restaurant. It took me right back to the small mom and pop restaurant business in Korea. All the staff was super friendly and welcoming. I hadn't had Korean food for awhile, so this experience was right on time.

Went here for my birthday, the food overall tasted good. Prices are a little high but understandable. Main concern is their ventilation system is poor/does not work. So when cooking the food, large amounts of smoke went straight into our face the whole time. Several people of our party had to step outside because it became so bad.

First time at this place....Never have I had a charcoal grill so close to me.....Cooked our meat the way we wanted after a lil instruction from the waitress....food is excellent

Was in Chicago for only one day and my go-to Korean BBQ place is closed on Tuesday, so we thought I would give this place a try. It is a little quant place with cute decor. We were the only ones there when we arrived, as it was early for dinner. We ordered 2 orders of the GalBi and an order of the Spicy Rice Cake. The GalBi was very tender and flavorful, and highly recommended. My guest said the Spicy Rice Cake was very authentic, I thought it was pretty good; with egg, cabbage, and few other ingredients. All of the side dishes you get when ordering the BBQ we're also very good, with a nice variety. I do wish they had a little bit more of a selection of meats, possibly squid or shrimp. The waitress was very polite and helpful, but maybe a little too helpful. She continued to help us cook the meat on the grill, but at a much faster pace than what we were wanting to eat at. We like to take our time and enjoy the food and the experience, it just felt like she was rushing us.

We had a lovely time here. It's one of the last remaining places with live charcoal grill. Very authentic Korean food that you can expect from Kbbq places in Korea. Galbi (Kalbi) is a must and they do that very well here. Best kbbq in Chicago, run by a very kind Korean family.

A little bit pricier than some of the other comparable korean restaurants, but the taste and the quality is well worth it. Not too salty, nor bland. Service is top notch and parking in the back for extra convenience! Definitely will be back when craving good soup

The food here was AMAZING. The cuts of meat were so juicy and the sides with delicious. The service here was spectacular, they cook the food and are so attentive. The server noticed I was low on water and moved the water next to me.

Most delicious we’ve had so far with KBBQ in Chicago! We got the brisket and Galbraith for two persons, and were so stuffed we couldn’t even move. The grill is a charcoal grill, which was an amazing added flavor to the meat, you get soup and lots of sides! Be careful, we dropped a piece of meat through the grill! 😭

My absolute favorite Korean food spot in Chicago. They prepare amazing main dishes as well as the free side dishes (banchan) you can tell how good their food is by tasting the freshness of their side dishes. Everything on the menu is excellent and that is not an exaggeration. Love their cooking and the ladies that work there. I really miss them now that I live in Philly. Used to go here twice a month easily. So good.

Just off of Lincoln Ave, this is a cozy little hole in the wall that is a pleasant surprise! They showed us how to do everything and even though it was our first time there, it wasn’t intimidating at all. The food was great! We got the brisket and the marinate short rib and the hot stone bibim bap. There is a soup that you can end with that is a lite pepper broth that was delicious! We def will return!

a very cozy place, with a family atmosphere. the charcoal grill adds a layer of deliciousness you can't get with gas. the portions were great, too. we had 1 galbi, 1 sait sal and a large veggie pancake for 3 adults and it was plenty. very friendly service. definitely recommend!

The food was really, really good. Usually I'm not one to pay to much attention to the side dishes served with Kbbq, but I legitimately enjoyed all of them. There are fewer side dishes than at some other places (i.e. picked daikon radish and the fish tofu strips) but what was there was very tasty. The meat itself was definitely the star of the show - expertly sliced and marinated. The server was also very friendly and willing to help us grill the meat with tongs and a set of commercial strength sheers in true Korean form. Two other things of note: 1. This place also does a lot traditional Kbbq with red-hot charcoals in an earthenware pot, this definitely imparts a less-than-healthy but deliciously smokey flavor to the meat 2. The fume hood is freaking legit. We could see every last but of smoke coming from the grill going straight up into it. I wore a shirt I liked less than some of my others because I knew we were doing Kbbq and often I told leave the restaurant reeking of the smell. Not so at Woo Chon! It did seem pricey to me, but to be fair it has been a while since I've been to Kbbq in this part of town do maybe I'm just out of the loop. I have been to cheaper Kbbq places, but they also weren't as good. To give a frame of reference, we got an order of fried Mandu, 2x meats to grill for our table, a large beer, and 2x Dolsot Bibimbap. They were happy to top off side dishes and we left full and satisfied - after tax and tip we ended up a bit north of $140 between the 4 of us. If I was with some more aggressive carnivores I think we easily could've hit past the mid-$200 range.

We had the marinated beef with the pork belly, personally I loved the beef it was so delicious. The pork belly was just a little too plain for my liking but still good. We also had the soju and that was my first time having it, it was pretty good I’ll try the peach flavor next time. Overall very good experience, great attentive staff. Will be coming back for more Korean bbq

Food was very delicious. for the four of us to be full and happy, we got 3 beef meats and one chicken. I wish they refilled our bonchon more often and we didn't have to ask for another refill. I never seen a KBBQ like it though. they had am interesting way of cooking at the table! it felt very primal. it was kind of empty for a Friday night at dinnertime. I had my doubts but I was impressed. I wouldn't go again just because I have more options here in Chinatown but the marinated beef was so good I might have to go again if I'm in the area.
