Review Fior D'italia - San Francisco

Pat Arthur
Every moment we spent on a Sunday afternoon at this historic restaurant was truly divine. We listened to fabulous (and well-seasoned) jazz musicians during our leisurely (3-hour) lunch. Our waiter Gil regaled us with tales about the origin of our bottle of Italian wine, as he served up a scrumptious 4-course beautifully plated meal. The atmosphere transports you to another very special place and time. A perfect way to spend an afternoon by the Bay.

We researched a good restaurant in Little Italy in hopes to find something amazing AND WE DID! Not only does it claim to be the oldest Italian restaurant in the US it’s also amazing. We went with four of us and we all enjoyed what we had. While the restaurant was a little older, it added to the historic piece of the restaurant. The staff was friendly and we can’t stop talking about how yummy the food was.

It was good… just not great. Server was nice. Manager was accommodating. Ambiance was worn and tired. Food is simple but fresh. We like to order several items to share at the table, but everything is so heavy and rich, we couldn’t find lighter or more vibrant dishes to balance it all out. The table bread was fantastic.

Had dinner with friends yesterday! Their fresh pasta were amazing the dry ones not that much. Service was a little slow for a calm Monday.

Flavorful food. Gnocchi softer than I am used to. Pumpkin ravioli exploded in my mouth 👄 this is supposedly the oldest Italian restaurant, but it was technically closed like 20 years ago, and the owners bought the branding of the oldest Italian restaurant so maybe that was a scam I didn’t really care because the food was great.

Went to get dinner with the family. The atmosphere was really relaxing. The staff was incredibly attentive and friendly. Ordered a bottle of wine, The Stag Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2019 which had a full and rich taste. The risotto alla milanese was delicious and good portion for one person. The tiramisu was perfect for dessert and good for sharing.

I love the atmosphere of the place. Authentic, old Italian restaurant. Maybe I had bad luck that day and it might also been due to my choice of meal but my experience wasn't what I had hoped for. I had Bruscetta and Tortellini a la Panna. The dressing of the salad with the Bruscetta was too vinegary for my taste and the taste of the overall dish was not to my liking. I did enjoy the Tortellini a la Panna and I appreciate freshly made pasta but I expected a more balanced taste. It's a rather heavy dish that has a dominant cream taste. I would recommend to pick other dishes. The food itself was still good but paired with the inattentive service, I didn't enjoy my evening there. I got the impression that the staff was not in a good mood and that simply didn't meet my expectation. As I already said, it might have been just a bad day too go and a choice of meal that doesnt do justice to the otherwise great chef but I can't speak for that. As for me, I'm glad I went. I really enjoyed taking a look around.

friendliest staff, that remembers you even if it’s been months since your last visit. the food is top notch, everything made from scratch (except the bread which is purchased fresh each day and is delicious). literally cannot go wrong with anything on the menu! the vibe is old school Italian restaurant, with some deep booths, as well as open tables. there’s a live piano player on several nights each week. i always take my out of town guests here, and highly recommend you stopping in too.

Amazing restaurant that is well worth the visit. Super friendly and helpful staff, and the best pasta I have ever had.

Such a great experience dining here!!! We went because Atlas Obscura recommended it as the literal oldest continually running Italian restaurant in the entire United States. We had high expectations, after all, restaurants tend to have a pretty high turnover rate. We were not disappointed. Vibes were exactly what we expected, the servers were friendly and available, the menu had almost too many options to choose from, and the cherry on top was all the old Italian locals hanging out by the bar - it made you wonder for how long they had been frequenting this establishment. We got the rack of lamb and lasagna, both were absolutely incredible. For dessert we had the cannoli and the creme caramel, both also exquisite. Fresh food, realistic prices for the city, and an amazing experience that you won't forget at an historic establishment.

Wow just wow. I sat at the bar by myself and had dinner. I got the tri color plate which had three kinds of pasta on it. You could tell the pasta was made fresh - it was amazing. Small but decent beer selection and the bartender was friendly and attentive. It was a great place for a woman dining alone. I will definitely go back if I’m in San Fran again.

Delicious food and quality products. The host was extremely friendly and the server polite. They seemed short staffed, having only two servers on in the main dining room. I gave 4 stars as the service was good but not great, likely because of the limited staff scheduled. I'd definitely go back for the food. Yum!

We had a great dinner at Fior d’Italia by chance, and we’re glad to have experienced this classic restaurant! With a party of 10 looking for a place to eat on a Friday night near Fisherman’s Wharf, the Fior d’Italia was able to accommodate our group at short notice and offered a great dining experience for our entire group which included adults and teens. The restaurant is in an historic hotel (the San Reno Hotel, which is said to be haunted!). It was a charming Victorian style building and traditionally decorated. It’s a large venue with multiple rooms and a full bar. The Italian servers that we had gave an authentic vibe to the dining experience and were responsive and pleasant. The food was enjoyed by the entire party. We had one dish come out considerably cooler than the rest, but the server was able to get it heated up quickly to resolve the issue. I had the lasagna which was presented differently than what I’m used to, but it was still delicious. They also provided nice fresh bread before the meal. They had a nice wine list and had good options for cocktails. The old fashioned was very good. This is a great place to get a hearty traditional Italian meal at a classic location! PS - we didn’t see any ghosts…unfortunately.

The place was really amazing as well as the staff but it’s kind got a bar there and a game was going on so it was a bit loud with some tipsy people. Other than that me and my significant other were very fortunate to get there before the hot peak hours where there was a huge line to be seated. We got a window seat. The staff were very friendly and attentive asking if we were okay, needed anything, and how was the food. Don’t get me started on the food you have to go there, try it, and be blown away because the flavor combinations are superb truly. Some of the most amazing Italian food I have tried thus far.

Very nice spot to eat with friendly staff. The food was amazing. I had the escargot as an appetizer and lamb for dinner with a glass of Rosè. Everything was flavorful and delicious. Highly recommend if you’re in the area looking for a nice place to dine.
Bruna Arantes
Amazing! Very tasty and delicious! Try the curry sauce with pasta, it is perfect!

One of the best ossobuco with polenta I have ever had. The home made pasta was also perfect.

Being Italian, I’m very picky when it comes to dining at Italian restaurants, but Fior D’Italia has captured my heart. Anything we’re in town, we must eat there. I have never found a dish that I disliked. Great food, great waitservice, great atmosphere, a must try!

The food and wine were outstanding, and the service was impeccable. I relied on the advice of my waiter to help narrow down my choices for food and dessert, and I was not disappointed with his suggestions! This was easily one of the best dining experiences I've had!

What can I say? This place is cozy, the service staff is superb, and the food... the best Italian food I’ve ever had. No wonder they’ve been in business since 1886. Next time I find myself back in San Francisco this will be the first restaurant I come to have dinner at

This will always be my favorite place to eat in San Francisco. The same staff has been there forever so they are very good at what they do and comfortable with everyone who comes in. The food was wonderful, service excellent, staff very welcoming. Try the tiramisu martini!

This is truly the best Italian restaurant in the Bay Area. Very authentic and great food. The staff is always super friendly. We use it mainly for special occasions because it is so special. Try their homemade pasta or the New York steak! You won't regret!

Old school since 1886. I love eating at historic establishments and this place is a must visit. We ate on a Wednesday night and had no reservations but I would recommend you make them just in case it gets busy.

Food was excellent. We went for Christmas Day and were also celebrating my husband's birthday. While the burrata portion was small for the price, the pasta dishes were perfect. The pumpkin ravioli is a must try! Fresh, warm bread with olive oil and balsamic is wonderful. Extremely fast and pleasant service. Would definitely revisit next time we're in SF.

Great service! Highly recommend the fried calamari and the salmon. Oldest Italian restaurant in continuous operation in the US!!
Nick Sophorn Palasini
My husband's dad recommend this restaurant to us knowing it'll be our first time in SF. I was impressed from the minute we got there. Everyone was very polite and the food was amazing! And not top it off, live music on a Wednesday evening! We will definitely be back.
Sadine 'Sadie' Sadler
Wonderful meal and attentive service. Our server jokingly removed our plates "before we licked them because that would be embarrassing." Fresh homeade pastas and fresh baked bread. Delicious!

Beautiful setting and so authentic! I would recommend it to anyone wanting a traditional Italian restaurant experience. The staff were outstanding!
