Review Ryoko's Japanese Restaurant & Bar - San Francisco

Raymond Soh (GFWT GoodFoodWillTravel)
My last dinner in SF before flying out tomorrow morning. We were looking for good food and decided on Ryoko’s after doing some searches. It was a good decision! Had the rainbow row and chicken karage and the amount was just right. Both dishes are excellent.

Ryoko Japanese Restaurant is a hidden gem when it comes to sushi dining. From the moment you step in, you are greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere that instantly transports you to Japan. The menu offers a wide variety of sushi options, each one more delicious than the last. The sushi at Ryoko is simply outstanding. The chefs are masterful in their craft, presenting each roll with precision and attention to detail. The fish is incredibly fresh and of the highest quality, making every bite a flavorful and delightful experience. The presentation of the sushi is visually stunning, almost too beautiful to eat. The staff at Ryoko are attentive and knowledgeable, always ready to offer recommendations and answer any questions you may have. They go above and beyond to ensure that your dining experience is nothing short of exceptional. If you're a sushi lover or looking to explore the world of Japanese cuisine, Ryoko Japanese Restaurant is a must-visit. The combination of incredible sushi, welcoming atmosphere, and top-notch service make this restaurant a true standout in the culinary scene.

Awesome sushi spot! The cocktail list was so fun and delicious. The sushi rolls were fresh and they were decently sized. We also got our food super fast. This place definitely feels like a hole in the wall which was so cool. I can’t wait to come back!

Loved my experience, definitely hope to be back! I know "sushi dive" may not appeal to everyone, but the food was amazing, service outstanding and I adore the atmosphere. Had the Tahoe roll with Asahi and edamame. Anywhere I can get tuna and Dr. Dre like that, I'm a big fan

Ask them to make a sashimi dinner for you. It was awesome. They tell you what to eat, how to eat and in what order with or without soy sauce. Delicious! Friendly, fast service.

When you love sushi and eat it all the time pretty much wherever you travel...this place exceeded my expectations for a fabulous San Francisco sushi restaurant. I had the Chirashi and it did not disappoint! Chef's choice and it was far more than the usual 5 sashimi's that are normally served. Kudos to the sushi chef for the creativity!

Highly recommend! A friend of mine posted a reel of this place on Instagram, and I saved it for my next trip to SF. I went when they opened at 6 and it’s down the stairs in a basement. The music was a lot of throwback hip-hop which was pretty cool! Had a few items - hot tuna roll, 49ers roll, salmon skin hand roll, and isaki sashimi. All delicious!!

This place was so good!! Get the fire rice! We also had wonton soup and a beef dish. So much food!! We way over ordered for 2 but we did some damage!

The food was absolutely delicious. The waitress was fun and attentive. She made suggestions on dishes and the best ways to eat them as well as suggestions on new drinks which were delicious. The restaurant was darker and had a more intimate feel to it. My only criticism is they do not have the capacity to accommodate a large group comfortably. We had a large group and were seated in a small room with a small fan. The fan did nothing and it became hot and uncomfortable quickly. With a small group, I would have no complaints. Highly recommend.

Great underground restaurant. Came here for soft shell crab, which doesn't seem to be common in the city. Did not disappoint! Also got chicken karaage that was incredibly juicy and good. Rolls were solid, although I'm not a sushi connisour so can't say how they are in comparison to other places. They had some pretty interesting rolls like salmon skin that was pretty solid. Very underground and nice atmosphere. Service was solid as well. Was not too busy when I went Tuesday night.

Great and tasty food!!! The portions are a little big but nothing too crazy.. the mochi was delicious!!!!!!!! The service was quite fast. Our servers were rude and kind of rushing us through our meal but overall nothing too bad

Their sashimi and Nigiri sushi are amazing for the price that they charged. Don't miss it. It open for dinner only.

Nice underground sushi place with lovely ambience for date or or a dinner with a friend. It could get packed at night but if you come before 7 you’ll be to get a table and food comes fast enough. I find their menu a bit confusing, the rolls division into 3 columns is not too clear, so it takes some time for me to pick (sometimes i even use Yelp to get a better idea for that). I’d say that if you know what to order you won’t be disappointed. My recommendation is Caterpillar roll

Really fresh and tasty sushi, and good value too. The soft shell crab and the octopus appetisers were so good I’d say they’re a must. We tried a few rolls and they were all amazing, probably my favourite was the salmon skin one. Dessert was interesting, but too sweet for me. Service was good and fairly quick. The music was too loud and felt too party-like for a sushi dinner.

Sushi is very fresh. Tahoe roll is very creamy and smooth. Rainbow roll with real crab meat is really tasty! Miso soup was great too!

Cozy, well-done basement sushi shop, excellent for late-night bites. Hearty miso. Eclectic salad of the day. Harmonious sushi rolls, such as the asparagus and smoked salmon. The Pokemon Roll was a favorite. Look for the chef's special kama (extra fatty salmon or tuna jaw/cheek/gills.

We went with three delicious rolls, Big Mama, The Spicy Golden Gate, and the Checkerboard! Started with a hot sake, miso soup, and seaweed salad. Each was as good as the other. Really cool and loud atmosphere and excellent quick service. Lightning speed!

Sushi rolls were good. Sashimi is over priced at $7 for two small slices which tasted average. Atmosphere and music is fun. Air conditioning doesn’t work in all parts of restaurant so we were very hot at the back of restaurant in a booth. Server was not friendly and it felt like we were constantly being rushed. The server had short hair and should learn how to give good service for (the expected!) 20% tip.

I stayed at San Francisco 4 days and went there twice! Small place with lots of surprises. There's always a long line but totally worth it. I love their sushi rolls and drinks. It's a great place whether you go as a group or dining solo.

I would say Da Best Japanese Restaurant I went to in San Francisco, Ono food, workers who can speak Japanese, only thing U go down steps bottom level just like in Japan & they play night club music!!! But U go for the authentic Japanese food!!! Take it from me who’s been working in & with Japanese food for over 36 years!!!

We’ve been here many times. Our favorite sushi place in town. Get the soft shell crab. Show up right when they open and you’ll get a table.

After two nights of stupidly trying other eateries my daughter stumbled upon this subterranean oasis. We're from Seattle and tend to lean on the more traditional side of things. So hearing a dj spinning old school funk rather than koto music caught my attention. The space seems more like an after hours chill out speakeasy. And I know this is prejudice of me to say, especially in San Fran, one of the most tolerant cities on this Earth, but the throngs of hipsters almost made me do an about face and bail. I am so happy and grateful that I did not. Our server was practically psychic just freaking amazing. Whomever is responsible for purchasing the fish is a genius. Everything was beyond fresh, except for tunas which have to be appropriately aged before serving but those were perfecto. The uni was delicate, with a sweet buttery finish one usually doesn't find unless it's extracted live on site. I was informed this wasn't the case but it would have fooled me. My daughter is fairly new to the world of sushi and tends to be fairly safe in her choices. Read: "touristy rolls etc.". I ordered a chefs choice sort of assortment she started with the ubiquitous California Roll which to both our surprise and delight was made with top shelf fresh crab rather than Krab or lower grade Dungeness. After years of cajoling I was able to get her to sample some toro and hamachi she even munched some of my taco sunomono. The check for two was surprisingly reasonable. You get a LOT of bang for your buck. If you an tolerate the inane bantering of hipsters lamenting how this liked this joint before it was cool, run and I mean RUN don't walk and put some world class sushi in your belly! The flavors are like what I imagine a mothers love is like.

Absolutely the best and most creative sushi we've had anywhere and the service was just as great!! It's a must if you're in the area!

An amazing little restaurant. I aint much of a japanese cuisine expert, but I had tasted a few in my life and their rolls went up straight to my top list. Loved the soup and sakeeee!

I was in town for the weekend and found this place thanks to Foursquare. It didn't disappoint

Great rolls and sashimi! All very fresh and wonderfully presented. Vibrant atmosphere and very nice staff. Can only recommend it!

Excellent. Worth the wait at the door. Try the Volcano Roll and order the best saki. Its worth it.

Sushi was ok. I had better sushi before. I don't see what the big hype is about this place other then it opens to 2am. Plus there's a DJ at night. I wouldn't come back again.

My absolute favorite place for Japanese food. Love the people
Jackie Poe Triplett
Great place my grandson loved the variety of sushi they served. Wonderful food and staff.

My new favorite haunt when in San Francisco! Run, don't walk to this incredibly cool restaurant. Nothing like any other sushi restaurant you will experience. And that's coming from a New Yorker!
