It's worth the wait! Their pastries are so buttery and flaky and delicious! Their sourdough bread is top notch. I want to come here everyday!
Went in around 8:30 AM and there was a long line already.
Got butter croissants and chocolate croissants. Some of the best croissants I ever had, flakey and delicious.
Will definitely be my stop during every visit to Richmond going forward.
The only disappointment was there was a limit of 8 on the number of items we could buy. There were other items I wanted to try but couldn’t.
Our Sunday happy place! We haven’t tried everything yet, but everything we have tried was yummy. We used to go after church, but now we go first😂. Just one more thing to be grateful for! This pesto, roasted tomato ,feta croissant is savory and magnificent! Pretty sure I won’t leave without one unless they run out. Hardworking, friendly staff makes waiting in line a small price to pay. Great coffee too!
The pastries and coffee from this shop were absolutely amazing. They have a brick oven at the back of the bakery and they were pumping out warm bread and pastries while we sat drinking our coffee. It also has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Make sure to prepare for a line if you’re going during the busy hours. Definitely worth the wait!
Stopped in for a coffee and was overtaken by the wonderful aromas! The croissants were warm, flaky, and down right delicious! Since I work within walking distance I’m sure to be a coffee regular!
Our Saturday mornings have been forever changed since discovering Sub Rosa Bakery. The allure of their artisanally crafted, leavened pastries and bread is truly irresistible. Every bite speaks of quality, freshness, and an unwavering commitment to baking excellence.
It's evident that there's a lot of heart and expertise that goes into crafting each loaf and pastry, making our weekly indulgence feel both wholesome and special. Given the bakery's popularity, we've learned to plan ahead; ordering a few days in advance ensures we get our favorites and the added bonus of skipping the queue.
For anyone seeking an authentic, health-conscious bakery experience, Sub Rosa is an absolute gem. We're not just regulars; we're unequivocally obsessed. Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit!
The bread and pastries at Sub Rosa have no business being so good - it might be worth the drive from Charlotte alone! Pro-tip: if you know what you want, order online ahead of time so you can skip the line and make sure they don't sell out beforehand.
Loved this place! First the pastries are amazing! The savory mushroom and the fig and cheese were both fabulous. The dough has the right amount of crunch and flakiness on the outside making the required mess of delicious flaky crumbs that good croissants make while still having a soft inside. SO GOOD!! The pain au raisin was also good but not quite as good as the others -- the filling might be a little too wet/heavy so the pastry soaks doesn't quite get the same flakiness as the other two pastries.
As for the bread, we got a day-old standard loaf for half off and it was also great. It has a wonderful sour note to it and a crispy crust. The only thing is that the hydration level might be a tad too high because the inside was still a little wet so it was the tiniest bit gummy when slicing even though it was obviously fully cooled since it's day-old, but a little toasting helped that.
Will definitely return!
One of the best croissants I've ever had! Loved this adorable bakery. Not a ton of seating so it's mostly a takeout place.

Visited town and had the joy of lodging nearby. I (surprisingly) bought a phenomenal bottle of natural wine here! If you’re looking for natty wine in Richmond, consider stopping by. Tiny collection but incredibly well curated. Funky stuff.
