The Bar Of Chocolate Cafe

My friends and I came in tonight to celebrate my best friends birthday. We had Georgia as our server and she was one of the best servers we’ve ever had! Super super sweet and friendly and was helpful in cocktail choices for us. Best server ever!! Being in the industry I so much appreciate great service and she exceeded the best service ever!

This place had a brilliant atmosphere. It's a great hole in the wall place that feels like Berlin. Cobblestones outside add to the feel. It's a super dark speakeasy, and when we got there at about 9:30, it was super loud and busy. We got sat down and didn't get served right away. Waitress and staff seemed overwhelmed and frantic. Once we finally got served, the chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting was absolutely amazing. It was a really thick and tasty cake and super rich. I'd like to go back when it's less busy.

If you’re in Portland- this place is a must stop! Jim the bartender will remind you of Jeff Goldblum, super chill- producing mass quantities of awesome martinis all night and they’re delicious! We loved both visits here! They have great deserts as well - very intimate atmosphere but off the chain on weekends after 9p.

Drinks and dessert! I joined the ladies while they got some martinis, they were all a hit. We also got dessert, everyone else got cake and I got creme brulee. The cakes were all very rich and tasty but hard to finish. When my creme brulee came out, the server torched it for me right at the table and I got to crack into the fresh caramelly top, so delicious! Great spot if you're looking for some decadence.

Went for after dinner martinis on my birthday (a Thursday night)…sat down and the waitress spilled a cup of water on two of us, which we didn’t make a big fuss about - we laughed and said it’s okay but then she says, “it’s just water.” She came back and we ordered our 2 martinis. We waited 35 minutes…no martinis. We watch the bartender take 2 shots with the people sitting at the bar and talking with them as if every table wasn’t occupied. We would’ve understood if he was shaking away and busy making drinks but he didn’t look busy, as if the place wasn’t packed inside and outside. It was unfortunate because we heard good things about this place.

We went to Bar of Chocolate upon a recommendation by the restaurant manager of a nearby establishment. He suggested we sit at the bar and meet Jim, the barkeep. What a fabulous recommendation! Jim is a mixologist of the old school, mixing by feel. A large repertoire of spirits and wines, coffee and chocolate of course. The menu includes a nice selection of pastries, cheese plate, olives and other delights. Either before dinner or winding up the night, you will be glad you visited.
