Cowgirl Creamery

I love this place. The smell of cheese is hypnotizing and the service staff is incredibly helpful for all things cheese and virtually anything you can find on their curated shelf of products (e.g. chocolate). We only ordered the cookies this time, but we’ve easily walked away with armfuls of Mt. Tam cheese wheels, coffees, and grilled cheese. This is a staple for anybody passing through. Stop to eat in their outdoor patio, have a picnic on the lawn, or take it to go.

California is crazy for this brand, so we were excited to check out this company store on a Hwy 1 drive. It’s definitely good, but kind of a strange place. No dedicated facilities, so the first task for road-trippers is to find the one public bathroom across town before settling into lunch. The store doesn’t have dedicated space for lunch, so we ate it at a park around the corner. After all this exploring to basically eat a - decidedly delicious - sandwich, soup and salad, we went back to the store at 4:02pm to buy some cheese and learned they had just closed for the day. Definitely a work-to-live move and can’t hate them for it. All said, the lunch was great but the experience a bit more of an adventure than planned. Easy to do as a couple but would involve a lot of wrangling with a larger family.

What a cool place! Grab some amazing food for lunch and eat it under the olive trees outside. Also, in case you are looking for one, there are no public restrooms.

We had a piece of truffled brie during a wine tasting in Napa Valley from Cowgirl Creamery so when we learned that we were going to be close by when we were on Point Reyes we made a point of making a visit to buy some cheese for the rest of the trip. They have nice retail space and a little kitchen where you can order a grilled cheese sandwich made with their cheese. We purchased some Mt Tan cheese from the creamery and Point Reyes Blue, some crackers, a cheese knife and a grilled cheese sandwich and we had lunch for three taken care of. There is really no where to eat out side that is very comfortable, and there is no eating inside at all. There are some planters and benches that you can sit on, on the side of the building and we made that work. The grill cheese was cooked perfectly and tasted good, but if was very filling and I was thankful that I was splitting it with someone. The Mt Tan cheese is their milder of the triple cream cheese and is smooth and rich without a strong flavor punch. I was not impressed with their customer service so that is why they are getting only four star. They were rather rude and it was hard to get anyone to help you at the cheese case, as they were all focused in the kitchen area. When we did get someone to help us with the cheeses they did not display any passion for the product and provided very short and non-descriptive answers to our questions. I would encourage any cheese lover to stop and visit because their cheese is very good. If you are lucky enough to be here during the holiday season then definitely seek out the truffled brie, you will not be disappointed.
