My husband and I have had meals there since it first opened, it's only one and a half blocks from our house, many meetings and brunches and breakfast with great memories of this popular place. Everything on the menu is fantastic and the service is great, the wait is worth the variety of food made for everyone, Vegans, Vegetarians, and Carnivores are all welcome, you get a healthy Minnesotan portion of food and never leave hungry. Powderhorn neighborhood is very lucky.

A coworker told me about it and I'm so glad! We came in with our three kids and I was nervous at first, especially with the wait (Sunday Brunch is busy everywhere, though). Our server was friendly, the food was amazing, the coffee was great, the decor was creative, the kids loved it, etc.
I'm really glad to have a new vegan place to throw into our brunch rotation!
Stumbled across this place by accident because we had car trouble while traveling and happened to stop at an auto shop nearby. One of us is vegetarian so we decided to give this place a shot. Food was delicious and staff were very friendly! Portions were HUGE. Even the meat eaters in our group were happy It was a little cramped but we were able to get seats right away. Will definitely be back.
Love the food - amazing vegan french toast, and hashbrown rancheros. The Latte was incredible too. Definitely going again - to try other items on the menu
I love Modern Times! The building and the way it's decorated is so fun- very warm and inviting! The staff is consistently kind, and are usually wearing outfits with so much personality. And the food! Not only do they have meat/veg/vegan iterations of I believe the whole menu, they are all delicious and hearty. I love all their salsas and various sauces. Get a cinnamon roll and any of their coffee drinks while there!
The 4 stars are mainly for the food. Our group ordered 4 dishes and all of them were amazing! I especially liked the cabbage salsa.
However, the waitstaff was extremely short and rude. When we stood in line to place our order, there were a lot of customizations available to choose from and the person behind the register behaved as if we were inconveniencing her by ordering. After having waited for 50 minutes for our food, when we asked how much longer it would be, the waitress responded with a shrug and 'I don't know that' and did not bother following up or checking. I understand that they were swamped at peak time but that does not excuse the behavior.
The excellent food was the only redeeming factor of the whole experience.
Amazing. I live in the middle of nowhere, so the amount of organic, vegan options was initially overwhelming. I had the chai with oatmilk, which was super spiced and foamy. The hashbrown rancheros with tofu was flavorful. Bottom line is this place is good as hell and I'd travel 2 hours to come back.
BEST vegan food! The service is so good! I always feel super welcomed (and remembered) by the staff (and I don’t even roll through that often)! And they play THE BEST music there! It’s my favorite punk rock spot for grubbin’!
We were quoted a 30 minute wait, got seated in less than 10 minutes! Every single staff member was so friendly, kind, and unique. The drinks were fantastic, the food was AMAZING! The whole vibe of the place with the colorful animal paintings and the personalities of everyone was fantastic. I will definitely come back if I’m ever in Minneapolis again!
Modern Times is a classic Minneapolis cafe. I’m obsessed with their fresh food, huge portions, creative dishes, general vibe, and progressive politics. Everyone who works there is always friendly, and I love how anyone can find something they’ll like on the menu - vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free etc. It’s an inclusive and cool space with incredible food. Highly recommend.

There are few places that serve an atmosphere, a casuality, a friendliness, and an attentiveness, with chill staff. The staff truly are genuine and amazing. They serve great food with many options for so many dietary choices. Then you can add on top of that how much attention they pay to their menu and food that comes to you. Modern times is my favorite breakfast spot. When all of the above comes together, it just... no words. When I go there I don't feel obligation, I don't feel expectation, I don't feel like I'm trying to be sold something, I feel free, I feel cozy and safe and genuine. As a person with anxiety and depression and a vegetarian diet this place is the definition of "hits the spot" as far as cafe is our concerned for me for both taste, diet, atmosphere, and people. Their food is incredibly delicious. It comes out just right, their menu evolves, and they support local artists in-house, and use so much local ingredients in products. This place couldn't be a cozier, more delicious, and perfectly atmospheric Cafe. It's mind-boggling and plate lickingly wonderful. Congrats to you and your creations Modern Times 🎉. The food service industry is not an easy one, but you are doing it right 💙.
Okay it doesn’t look like much when you go inside but definitely a gem in the city. Best Vegan Breakfast I’ve ever had and I am a picky eater. First off, it’s so hard to find a spot that doesn’t make vegan French toast without banana - idk if it’s cause of where I go but literally that is usually the case and here they made it with a cream base and it was AMAZING!
Second I got tofu eggs, not your typical scramble (looks more like a pancake shape) but it was so good!!
Lots of good drinks and the hash browns were good too.
Also from the atmosphere they are very queer friendly so that made me happy!! If you’re looking for a vegan spot, don’t look any further!!
