For some reason, just before I travel my body always gives way to the bug du jour - it's as if it'd been holding on to get through the stress of leaving everything in a good place at work, at home, before going on vacation - and just when all is set to go, it decides it's ok to throw in the towel on my immune system. As I save my only international trip of the year for the holidays, I was anxious when I started feeling a cold coming on just before my trip. No time / not in the mood to cook - I went in search of foods to soothe body and soul to fuel the fight against the virus before it gets full blown. I remembered a Korean 'sick soup' that supposedly does wonders for hangovers and/or illness - Sul Lung Tang. And according to Google, one of the 'best' of these comes from a hole-in-the-wall in Koreatown, that specializes in nothing but this soup: Han Bat Shul Lung Tang (not sure why they spell Sul with an "h", other places do not - any Koreans out there can shed some light on the correc

Porridge or congee is one of the best things to have when you are drunk, hung over, or sick. This bland, stomach filling meal is perfect to sooth that the body that you put it through. Mountain Cafe, in Koreatown, serves some of the best congee, abalone c

One of the most underrated spots in this plaza of good food places. I'm secretly glad all of you guys tend towards the flashier spots here, with their giant platters of meat, blowtorch maneuvers, and oversized banchan spreads. Because it means I can dodge all of you and sit right down here where I always have a cup of warm barley tea and enjoy a meal that reminds me of what my friend's mom might make for me. A lot of the food in this little square is flavor-packed, impressive-looking, and super loud. But the food here is quiet, more humble, and will give you that most uncommon sensation in most dining experience: a sense of comfort in your gut and your noggin. So if you want a place to show off to your friends about how much of a meat head and culinary badass you are, stay away from my little gem. But if you want a place that'll make you smile, remind you a bit of home (even if you're not in any way, shape, or form Asian by any stretch of the imagination), and make you feel like you exist, then maybe you and I can share a meal a few seats apart at Mountain cafe together. That abalone porridge is MINE though!

Ordered the whole chicken soup and abalone chowder. The chicken soup is awesome. Feeling warm from inside your body after eating. The abalone chowder is not bad although tastes a lil bit too plain comparing to the chicken soup. This place is popular at late night and was full soon after we sat down

Abalone rice porridge is amazing! What a great comfort, especially for those late night munchies or something to soothe a sick body. For something that seems so simple, it packs a lot of taste. The banchan here is on point too, which is always a good indicator of a quality restaurant .

I had an issue with price discrepancy ordering through postmates(0/10 don’t recommend postmates) but this place was good. Their beef banchan and abalone porridge is the obvious stand out star. The beef was super hot still which is rare for this banchan in my experience and made the lunch. After talking to management about the prices I was really impressed with his understanding of the situation and how he handled it. Which is great customer service! Definitely don’t recommend ordering delivery from postmates as they are not partnered. Call the restaurant directly for delivery or just pick up togo it’s right across from the hmart!

For breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, late night or a good hangover meal, Mountain Cafe will take care of you. Their abalone congee hits the spot. Their ginger chicken soup stuffed with rice is also amazing. Also, what Korean restaurant is without side dishes? Mountain cafe offers unlimited kimchee, beef cubes, and more with your meal. This hole in the wall place may not seem like much but you will definitely get the bang for your buck.

Really great to come here when you just want something hearty and comforting. The soups are not overly salty, but can add salt to taste. The side dishes (the Kimchies) are super delicious and work perfectly with the softer soups. My favorite of the ones we ordered was the chicken ginseng soup!
