This might be the number one restaurant I've been in my entire trip in Honolulu! We were lucky that we didn't have to wait at all to be seated and servers were very friendly. Some of them did not speak English very well but they all tried their best. All food we ordered were so fresh and delicious that we kept ordering more. Since it was busy dinner time, some of the orders took more than 20 minutes to come out but we were warned by the server before we order. This place is located in the Japanese food court but definitely not a food court quality food! You MUST try this place when you are in Waikiki area.
The food at Izakaya Kai is decent for the price you pay in this part of Waikiki. We had a hankering for some sushi, so we each opted for a bowl of chirashi which hit the spot.
The restaurant was pretty busy when we stopped by at 1 PM. People were constantly filtering in and out. Despite this, there was only one server and host working the front of the restaurant at the time. I had to vie for the attention of our server when we needed the check for example.
Aside from that, if you go in with reasonable expectations of price vs location, this place is pretty decent.
Best experience and food that I have had in a while in Waikiki. First time here and I will definitely be coming back for more. I really loved it.
The food is awesome, the service is Japanese style, great decor, and modern appeal. I came here with my boss and had a great time while eating Japanese steak on a hot lava plate with rice and all the sides.
I had a lemon chuhai to drink which was tasty and refreshing after a long day at work. My boss had Japanese whiskey and soda water.

The whole underground are Japanese food. This one is more for the takeout style dinner or lunch. For lunch, they only offer full combination of rice/ udon noodle with sashimi (raw fish or pork) or fried pork. No individual sashimi offer, and almost noside dish. Only dinner offer sashimi, but relative expensive, comparing ti lunch deal (most about $15)
The Japanese food here is authentic.
Had salmon poke and udon soup meal here, and sat at the bar. Food was great, no complaints there whatsoever, very fresh and flavorful. The service was subpar, however. I waited probably 10-15 minutes to even order (they were not busy, I was the only one at the bar). Each thing I needed from the server, orders, check, etc, took way longer than it should have. Food good, servers need work.
Here is fantastic! Good service! They served another Udon when i was taking onion out. Food is exactly same as their exhibis. Also, i like the BGM. Highly recommand.
This place has the freshest sushi and it’s made faster than anywhere I’ve ever been. So delicious. No shortage of Uni here. They have a great starter/app selection like Broiled Salted Makerel.
Very delicious seafood rice! It’s same level as what I ate in Kyoto Japan.
Awesome lunch specials. Ordered rainbow chirashi bowl and Salmon Katsu. Something for everyone.
