I've grown up eating at Doe's and everybody has their own opinion. But mine is that it's the best steak you will ever get. I eat steak every time I go out from coast to coast and around the world. But to me Doe's is still the best!!! Get the Sirloin and take some home to eat again. If your cheap don't go it's high but well worth it.

Our group of three had worked all day long and hard at Lake Washington relocating a fishing trailer and were tired and hungry. We had lived in Greenville for Fifteen years back in the 80s-90s but never really could afford to eat with y'all but twice. Have visited several times on return trips to the area and it's always on the 'destination list'. Still love the ambience, the service and the steaks are, as always, out of this world. Can't imagine handling the three pound porterhouse but the two pound, bone-in rib-eye was perfection. The 'char' y'all put on a piece of meat can't be duplicated. All the staff are scrambling around, busy-busy and real nice and accommodating. One of the ladies busing tables even brought me a band-aid when she noticed a scratch on my arm. She just smiled and kept on working....(Don Drane - Madison, MS)

September 28, 2018 · by willoughbyandy · in Everything Else, Mississippi, Southeast · Leave a comment. Walking in the screened front door of Doe’s Eat Place, we immediately assumed we had made a mistake – we were standing in the kitchen, right next to the grill.  We asked and they waved us through to the second kitchen – where the salads, toast and fries were made – and a lady asked if we had a reservation.

Doe’s Eat Place is just minutes from downtown Greenville, Mississippi. It is in a small wood frame in the middle of a neighborhood. Let me just say the walking into Doe’s was like walking into my grandmother’s home, warm and inviting. We were greeted outside the building and even without reservations, ushered in and quickly seated. The first thing you’ll notice about Doe’s is that you walk THROUGH the kitchen areas! In the first room you will find the broiler where they cook your steaks and large vats of tamales that have been cooked to perfection. In the next room, the first thing you’ll probably see is Aunt Florence. Aunt Florence has manned the salad bowl since the inception of Doe’s in 1941. There are also large stoves with big cast iron skillets for frying fries and large pots brimming with the nightly fare. One thing you won’t find at Doe’s is menus. Your waitress shares the offerings verbally. Of course, we had to try the famous tamales and the dressing on Aunt Florence’s salad was plentiful and refreshing.  The filet and broiled shrimp were just as tasty as described and the fries were beautifully browned.

Our waitress had been at Doe’s for 29 years and her mother had been there 40+ years. They were so interesting to visit with, giving us more insight into this phenomenon called Doe’s. I applaud these hard working ladies! They made a hard job look easy.
I will tell you as I told the staff when I left. The food was very good, but the company was exceptional. It was at this point that Aunt Florence gave me a big hug (just like my grandmother would have).  Travelandtable.com

This place was recommended to me by folks who live in the area. I read reviews on here (thank you Urbanspoon/Zomato friends) before dinner so I had an idea of what to expect. Historical old place, no menus, etc. I ordered the filet because I knew other cuts offered would be too much food for me by myself. My filet was a large thick cut (at least 16 oz, maybe more), super tender and cooked very nicely (medium rare). Steaks come with french fries, the french fries were okay but could have used some seasoning, I’m not much of a french fry person anyway; big steak cut french fries, tasted very fresh. I had a salad and the lemon oil dressing was delicious, the salad itself was basic iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and some red onion. I wanted a little something more besides fries so I ordered 6 broiled shrimp to go with my steak. Overall the food was delicious, however I do feel like the pricing was a little steep for the shrimp I got, I don’t like the idea of not being able to look at a menu (pricing) either, as other reviewers here have stated. My server was very nice and attentive, no complaints about service. I would recommend eating here, the people here are super nice, the food was great but be prepared to pay more than you would expect given the “hole in the wall” environment of the place.

Neat cafe in an old building. Kitchen in open view. Friendly staff. Tasty tamales! Delicious 48 oz porterhouse. Glad we stopped in. Would recommend to anyone!

A Dose of Doe's. We hadn’t been to Doe’s Eat Place for about 30 years. It doesn’t sit on any convenient travel route and there isn’t much other reason to go to Greenville. But Doe’s was just as we remembered—an old wooden shack looking like a strong breeze could knock it down.

We arrived on a Saturday evening at around 8:00pm. We had to wait almost 30 minutes for a table. There is no place to sit but outside—where the mosquitoes found us to be a suitable dinner.

Once inside we were asked to order. There weren’t menus, so the server just told us the few things available. We ordered the 2 1⁄2 pound Porterhouse to split. For $63(!) it comes with a small order of fries. One dinner salad is $5. We also got some tamales, a regional specialty (3 for $5).

The place was busy and service was slow but friendly.

The tamales were only OK. The salad, while simple, was very nice. The star was the steak. After cooking, it was cut away from the bone and into manageable pieces. I wouldn’t have normally liked that, but the huge size of the serving made this an easier option.

The steak was delicious. The fries were also very good.

Doe’s serves beer and a range of soft drinks, but no wine. You can, however, bring our own.

Doe’s is a fun treat (every 30 years or so).

A basic rather dumby place with huge & expensive steaks. Drove 60 miles to eat here after a 50 year interval. Won't do it again but glad I went

I am from the Delta and did not eat here until I moved off. The location is definitely not in the good place & it is what I would consider a hole in the wall restaurant. I have to agree that the price seems a little steep for a picnic table cloth type restaurant. The tamales are excellent & the steak is good tho. I would recommend it just for the experience & I know I will eat here again.

Steak, Shrimp, Salad. I was staying in the area for work and all my coworkers rave about Doe's. I am not a steak enthusiast; I prefer seafood or chicken, yet I know that I'm in the minority. I was "warned" that the restaurant was located in a less than desirable neighborhood and had security personnel outside. The restaurant is also an old store, I recommend reading the history on their website. But for those than don't, understand you will enter the rather "run-down looking" establishment from a screen door than leads directly into a room where their grill is located and then you will walk through the kitchen (I've yet to understand how this complies with Health Inspection rules, but it is what it is). Some tables are located with full view of the entire food preparation. You drink options are either beer, soda, or tea and note that sodas will come in the can and you pay per can. I actually never saw a menu, our waitress just recited the very simple menu to us (tamales, spaghetti, chili, steaks, fried shrimp, broiled shrimp, hand cut french fries and salad). We ordered the broiled shrimp as an appetizer with salads. The shrimp was probably my favorite part of the meal. I ordered the filet, medium-rare, with fries. My steak was more on the medium side, but regardless it was good; very tender and served with drippings from the cooking process with butter mixed in. Hand cut french fries with buttery steak drippings, mmmm. The dinner was very pricey, but if you're a true steak enthusiast that's not unwilling to pay the price and overlook the conditions of the establishment, I recommend Doe's Eat Place.
