Love the corn fritters. I Went to Hickory Hollow last night. I had not been there in a very long time. Don't let the outside fool you. It doesn't look so good from the outside not to mention there is a goat in a cage to he South of the building. No worries, all you smell is BBQ, no goat. Also beware! Hickory Hollow is a cash only establishment! There is an ATM near the door and the restaurant is only open to 8pm.
The inside is kind of small but currently there is a cute Easter décor. There are many items to choose from on the menu besides BBQ such as seafood. There are also many sides to include veggies, fruit, beans, potato salads and slaw to name a few.
I ordered the Jumbo spare rib plate with cabbage an fried okra. My side kick got the beef au jus and steak fries. The food took awhile to come out, but the place was full and the sign on the front door clearly states that if you are in a hurry this place is not for you.
When the food came out it was hot and looked good. My plate came with corn fritters which were so awesome! It is not like a traditional hush puppy, but totally worthy of you eating one. My ribs already had some sauce on them and they were so tender they easily came off the bone. There are two sauces you can pick from, a spicy and a sweet. I recommend the sweet I felt it was a generous portion as I was given 8 ribs. My cabbage was pretty good. My fried okra was also good but taste like your run of the mill frozen stuff.
My sidekick seemed to enjoy the beef au jus, but after I tried it we agreed it was a little dry. We thought they had forgot to give us the au jus sauce as there was no cup on the plate and the bun only looked like it had butter on it. When we asked the waitress she said it comes on the sandwich already but offered to bring us some more. When she brought us a side of the au jus out it was yellow! Not brown like most places. I tasted it and it had a nice flavor but not what I was use to. Maybe it is their version? The steak fries that came out with this meal were hot, crisp and very good.
In all, I would recommend this place to a friend. Remember to bring cash, not be in a hurry ( you shouldn't be anyway you went out to enjoy yourself!) and be open to try "their" version of something.
Hidden Gem!. Looks like a hole in the wall from outside, inside its cozy/ small town feeling. CASH ONLY! but they do have an ATM if you were unprepared.
The food is DELICIOUS! Home cooked flavors, smokey, rich & savory. The prices are low and the portions are good. They have a big selection of soda (pop) and even Mr. Pibb-a fact which my husband loved. The corn fritters were excellent! Brunswick Stew was so full of flavor and home cooked aromas. Although its located in kinda the middle of no where, my husband and I will make sure we find our way in this direction more often.
Fantastic overall!
BBQ and more. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. Inside looks much better, knotty pine walls provide a dated but comfortable feel. If not for a few pig figures sitting around and some extra squeeze bottles on the tables you would not think this is a BBQ place. In fact it is more than a BBQ place with several seafood items on the menu.
I came for the BBQ, the Eastern North Carolina Pulled Pork. It was likely very authentic and I found it good. The vinegar flavor was nice but a bit subtle, easily enhanced with a bit more from the table bottle. The other sauce choices were also good. Not on the table was any overly sweet sauce.
While other reviews speak highly of the corn fritters I was a little disappointed. I was expecting something more like a hushpuppy. These were not very sweet and the outer shell was quite crunchy. One of my dinner companions loved them. I may be making a rookie mistake to expect something different. My sampling of the Key Lime Pie was delicious.
Service was fine, no problems. It was surprisingly not very busy. This family owned restaurant was a good find for us tonight.
Skip the "Traditional"sauce, go for the "Eastern N. C." flavor. Don't let that word "vinegar" scare you. My first time to order Shanks, smoked. They came dry, and they were excellent: flavorful and not dried out like good BBQ pork ribs. Then add the sauce of choice, but the shanks don't really need help. Wednesday's dinner meal was crowded (Wednesday!) But the service was still good.
The best north Carolina style BBQ in Florida, hands down. The side items are always great. Consistently very good
This place is great! I have had the pulled pork and the shanks which were simply awesome. I just wish that they would put the head back on the madi gras mascot out front!
Corn fritter heaven. Great pulled pork and corn fritters
Should be the official BBQ of Manatee County. Good God I love this place, even make a pilgrimage down there from time to time. This establisment is sacred ground in our BBQ circles and one of the very few places that can do eastern Carolinan vinegar....if thats your thing. We're talking very sacred, as in "and on the 8th day God created the Holler', and it was good." I like the variety in the sides (all good) and in the meat sizes as well...go small or go gluttony (gluttony), up to you and you MUST. HAVE. THE. CORN. FRITTERS. Best side food EVER, hell, I even order extras to take home later.
I love the food, I love the country "we ain't in no hurry, boy" southern pace, you just have to check this place out, especially if you frequent Ellenton Outlet Mall, it's just on the other side of the interstate. FYI: gets jammed quickly (it's no secret) and last I was there, it's only cash, but they have one of those 3rd party ATM's in house.

All ways a WINNER meal!. My family and I have been going to HH for years and it is usually the pick for a special occassion spot. Birthdays, anniversaries etc. The vegetable pig menu is the only menu I need. A sample of any or all of them makes a meal and add some real Chesapeake Bay style crabcakes (no filler in these) and you are done. Both types of BBQ are remarkable and authentic along with the ribs They arent open on Mondays so keep this in mind and you wont be disappointed as I was one Monday. All and all you are guaranteed to have a great affordable meal and walk out full. Please continue with the good eats. Thanks for being there.
Great place. Not for the BBQ purist. good offbeat offerings. fried olive bites are good, excellent and inventive sides, oustanding beer selection. Try the pork shanks, awsome!
I have no words to describe how spectacular the food was, my 13 year old described the food as "out of this world". The place is nice and clean with a great atmosphere. They have excellent prices and an extraordinary service. The owner came out to say hi to us told us the story of the restaurant, they have been in business since 1984 and keeping the same family tradition and recipes. Definitely a must go in this area!.
This is a great BBQ joint. It's clean and the staff are very friendly. And even more the food is delicious. Definitely recommend if you want to get away from the posh establishments and eat some good southern cooking.
One of the best tasting food places I have been to in a while. They flavor their food extremely well! Nice homey little place with tastes for everyone
This place is so cute, and it made me feel like I was home in the Midwest in the 80s. It has a great relaxed vibe, good service, and great food. I liked the atmosphere so much that I'd come here all the time if I were closer.
Amazing BBQ! The St Louis ribs fell off the bone as I picked em up. Like the bone couldn't hold the weight of the meat in the air. Potentially the best ribs I've ever had. And the livestock out back was awesome. Definitely jealous of the goatee on this goat out back. He was smiling for the photos too. Overall great experience!
Outstanding lunch. Went for the pulled pork and got the crab cake lunch. So much crab! So delicious! So many choices for sides. I got stewed tomatoes and corn pudding. Both yummy! And 2 corn fritters and Cole slaw rounded out this great lunch experience. The new hostess was so friendly and gave great recommendations. Rachel was just who you would want for your wait staff. Her sweet manner and suggestions made my lunch perfect. Thanks to all of you. I'll be back soon.
My husband and I went last night for the first time and there was a sign on the door that said if you’re in a hurry this is not the place for you. We were in and out in an hour and a half at the dinner 5 pm hour. The woman who seated us asked us to be patient as they were catering an event and they only had two servers.
We hardly waited at all. We had the crab cakes as an app in anticipation of a longer wait and they were fantastic. No filler. We each got a full rack of baby back ribs and the meat fell off the bone. Generous portions and awesome service.
I wasn’t too fond of the Mac and cheese but it wasn’t bad. I’m just picky.
We enjoyed a great night out and had a very pleasant experience. Will definitely be back!!
Best BBQ I've ever eaten... meats cooked to perfection with delicious seasonings and sauce options... and a delectable array of southern style sides to complete your feast. Friendly service with a down home vibe... worth the drive for sure!
