Review Chengdu Impression - Chicago

Kevin
Been here twice and the quality of the food has been incredible. Beautifully spiced and precisely cooked. Have had the hot pot, pork bao, mapo tofu and spinach so far and would recommend any of them.

Have eaten here twice now, and it's honestly my favorite Szechuan restaurant in the country. This is my favorite style of Chinese. I've had maybe 7 different things here this year and everything has been stellar. Drinks leave something to be desired, but whatever... that's commen in Asian restaurants/Asia. Highly recommend this place

Stopped in on a whim, as I've passed by multiple times as it's been busy. It looks quite unassuming from the outside, but is definitely worth a stop in. We started with some dumplings, then ordered Mongolian beef and cumin lamb. Everything was cooked perfectly and extremely flavorful. The Mongolian beef was mild, whereas my cumin lamb had the perfect amount of spice to it. We will absolutely be returning to try more of the menu. Thanks!

Wonderful meal but SPICY!!! Our first date night after having our 3rd baby!

We went for the Zhong dumplings but loved everything we tried! They do have a bar too, which is nice. The menu has a lot of spicy items, but I was there for that.. We split 2 entrees, a vegetable, and two orders of dumplings. Walked out stuffed and had plenty of leftovers.

We had the chendgu soup hotpot thing, the green beans, the Chengdu dry chili chicken and Dan Dan noodles and the dumplings all of which was amazing. This was between two people so we had a ton of leftovers that tasted just as good the next day! Can wait to order the noodles, chicken, and green beans for takeout soon as welll!!

The food at this Chengdu Impression location is far and above that at the Wicker Park or Edgewater locations. Service was prompt and courteous despite being very busy when I was there. Parking can be a hassle since it's just off of Halsted Street and a bit of a hike from the nearest El Stops, but it's well worth it! I highly recommend the Twice Cooked Pork and the Sichuan Beef Noodle Soup. Beware, I was there when it was cold out and the constant flow of delivery drivers blew in the cold air and froze the whole restaurant. Not sure if the heat was off, but bring a sweater or be prepared to wear your winter coat to eat!

Easily one of the most authentic Sichuan restaurants in Chicago. From the popular spicy dry spots to hidden gems like the Sichuan style pork kidneys, there are no shortage of spicy, delicious dishes to choose from. Some of my go-to favorites are the boiling fish (or beef), twice cooked pork, and the lord’s pork feet. For the most adventurous eaters, double fried pork intestines and hot wok frogs will test your passion for Chinese food. Whether it's a cold appetizer or a fiery pot of steamed fish, the kitchen is not shy about texturizing everything with a glowing layer of chili oil, dried chilies, as well as the most important ingredient of all, Sichuan green peppercorn. Some might have reservations about whether the dishes are too spicy, but even when fully dressed in plenty of chilies and oil, I personally find their spice level to be on the milder side. Lastly, I would definitely give this place a five star if it wasn’t for the consistent understaffing, and hence, the resulting long wait every time I visit during dinner hours.

Some of the freshest, most flavorful Chinese food. Staff were attentive and friendly. Will definitely be going back!

Great Sichuan or Szechuan cuisine. My friends took me there to try their fish soup. It was marvelous and they helped me given my gluten sensitivity.

We have been coming here since it opened and haven't had one thing that I didn't like here! It is as traditional and authentic as you can get these days outside of China town. It is quite busy because it close to DePaul. The crowd is mixed but mostly Asian. They do offer a small American Chinese menu but I would say 90% of the menu is spicy to some degree. If you don't like spice your options will be very limited. The level is spice is actually quite tame when compared to the origin of the food but it is good enough for us.

Absolutely love this restaurant! They serve authentic chinese chengdu food! I will definitely order again! Perfect food for raining day! I recommend sour fish fillet, dry chilli cucumber and scanllion pancake

Is it possible to have good Chinese food outside of Chicago Chinatown? Pulling up to the building I definitely was questioning our choice, but once inside it was clean and quant. We had the Tainfu boiling fish, dry chili rabbit, YuShiang eggplant, and toothpick beef. The Tianfu boiling fish was a good size portion with a lot of fish and vegetables, good flavor and it was spicy. It does have Szechuan peppers in it and will make your tongue numb, personally I am not a fan of it. The dry chili rabbit is crunchy and spicy and I knew it had bones it, but there are a lot of small ones, so be careful. The toothpick beef had the right amount of cumin and flavor, but I cannot figure what advantage the toothpicks bring to the dish. I thought they just made it more difficult to eat. The YuShaing eggplant is a sweet dish, it was ok, but I should have taken the servers suggestion and get the eggplant and pork. You can park in the lot on the North side of the building fter 5:30, otherwise you will need to find a place in the street. The No Parking signs are a little confusing so be careful.

* Overall 4/5, i would recommend it. * Food 4.5/5, tasty spicy Chinese food. * Staff 4/5, sometimes will have a long wait for the service to come back. * Environment 3.5/5, I got multiple paper cut on my hand by the table cover papers... * Parking 3.5/5, small parking area, street parking needed. * Price $$/$$$$. Not bad.

Really incredible meal here a couple of weeks ago. Simple space, maybe too bright, but quick, non-fussy service, but despite the sparse ambiance the food here is worth going out of your way for, even if you don't frequent this particular part of Lincoln Park. I think what we had (see pics) were the Meizhou Style pork racks with lao gan ma sauce, mala fish fillet (notably great tongue-tingling numbing from the Szechuan peppercorns, actually a citrus thing like you get from grapefruit oil) and Szechuan wontons in a chili oil sauce. We had some perfectly cooked bok choy, too. Absolutely brilliant. Good balance of heat, Szechuan pepper and other exciting flavors that make this a standout in Chicago. Highly recommended.

Really gone down hill a lot. Food quality is worse. Portions are smaller. They mix in pork dumplings with their veggie dumplings. Their delivery people refuse to come upstairs, and scream at you to come downstairs and outside.

I loved this place so much when I lived in Chicago. It was just down the street and I ate there often. I will return when I visit. No one makes Mongolian beef and vegetable fried rice like this place. The egg rolls are amazing as well. I would give it an infinite number of stars if I could!

Horrible customer service. This placed used to be awesome. I don’t know what happened or if there was a change in management but it’s just bad now. Seek out other Szechuan restaurants in your area - it’ll be better.

Very good Sichuan food. Try the cold noodle appetizer. I also love the dumplings in chili oil, but I don't think you can go wrong with anything Chengdu offers.

We ordered delivery from here tonight. Got 4 or 5 items (egg drop soup, fried rice, General Tso's Chicken, crab rangoons) Best thing we got was a Coke.

Delicious but too spicy for me! Anyway, it's definitely worth to taste.
