Charleston, West Virginia: Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream+Taylor Books; restaurant review+things to do. Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream 225 Capitol St., (304) 343-6488. M-Thur 11am-8pm; F-Sat 11am-10pm; Sun 11am-5pm. exterior of Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream in Charleston, West Virginia. Counter-service in this crisp ice cream parlor-cafe keeps things moving quickly. It is a great stop for a salad or sandwich, but don’t miss the soup of the day with a side of local Charleston bread. From an array of housemade ice cream flavors, I picked Butter Pecan and wasn’t sorry. Flavors change regularly, but folks say it is worth the wait for Espresso Oreo and Guinness. Gluten-free and dairy-free options are also available. All this and really nice servers, too!
Homemade ice cream *drops mic, walks away*. To get a scoop of Dutch chocolate
Best ice cream in the state. It's a little pricey, but 1- Ellen uses fresh, high quality ingredients and 2- it's just ice cream. If you complain about spending a few extra dollars to support a local business, just go eat the crap at Dairy Queen. The grilled cheese sandwiches here are incredible too. And the mixed berry smoothies! I love the curried chicken salad on Wednesdays. Coffee is better than Taylor Books. But my all time favorite is the espresso oreo ice cream- it's unbelievably yummy!!

We happened upon Ellen's Homemade Ice Cream today, and it was a pure delight! Extremely friendly service, large menu, and ice cream supreme. I had the raspberry chocolate chip and it was da bomb dot com! I highly recommend this delicious treat!
Yum yum and did I say yum?
The Best. Try Ellen's raspberry chocolate chip. You will find lots of great & different flavor that you won't find at other places. Definitely worth paying for.
The ice cream is good and often very inventive. I don't recommend getting a meal hear though. Every food item I've had was either bland and lacking or a half hearted (and failing) attempt to be "casual gourmet". I also dislike that they add a certain percentage to your bill if you pay with a credit card.
Great Homemade Ice Cream.... If you like Ice Cream - and I know you do - you have to give Ellen's a try. I've tasted homemade flavors all over the country - and Ellen's ranks up there as one of the best.
Lunch Fav. Ok, the ice cream is sooooooo good. But the surprise is how awesome their lunch menu is - great wraps, salads and soups that are also quite healthy.
The atmosphere is as quality as the ice cream (and food). The friendly staff and convenient location makes this one of my favorite places in Charleston.
Great ice cream shop right in downtown! With indoor and outdoor seating it makes for an excellent experience. Greeted by the friendly staff I got Expresso Oreo and Black Raspberry and both hit the spot! Would definitely recommend popping in.
Yumm! Wonderful ice cream flavours and variety of product available (gelato, smoothies, espresso, food bites, etc.) Charleston is one of the places we stop at numerous times a year when traveling as it is on our way everytime.. we have come to find some wonderful stops and glad to have come across Ellen's Homemade Ice Cream! I enjoyed the passionfruit gelato and the coffee ice cream, very delicious and creamy. They dont have any indoor dine in right now available but offer a variety of outdoors seating along Capitol Ave in downtown Charleston which made for a great stroll through the city while enjoying our frozen treats. Lots of parking available as we came later in the evening and on a weekday but sure seems like a very busy area with a lot of activity but there are a lot of parking garages around. If looking for a wonderful dessert/beverage I'd recommend stopping by.
Cute little ice cream shop. Loved that they had non-dairy options. The raspberry almond milk ice cream was fantastic. Chocolate Brownie Sundae pleased my chocolate loving son. Husband got a pink panther Sundae & I think the other kid got orange-creamsicle ice cream. With a good size fudgey brownie at the bottom. Nice area it is located in too.
Was a bit on the higher price side for ice cream shops we've visited. ($27 for 2 sundaes & 2 waffle cones.) But it was quality homemade ice cream in a big city, so that wasn't a big surprise. Just heads up for travelers.
Another surprise here in Charleston! Not only do they serve almond milk froyo (vanilla, chocolate, or swirl), but they also have vegan and gluten free food options for their daily specials. The staff was super accommodating and helpful answering questions. No matter what the weather, this place is worth an ice cream visit!
Hey man, they had one almond milk icecream available and that's all I need. Nom.
First time to the city and wanted to experience the local life. This is a must if you are in town. The staff is very friendly. The ice cream was delicious! There’s only metered street parking or you have to find a garage. Cozy sitting area and a cute kids corner.
Great ice cream and quick service. Perfect place for grabbing dessert after dinner down town!!!
