We stopped in about 9 pm on a Friday night to hear a band that started at 10. Not being folks that just sit, listen to music, drink water and don't buy anything....(and you know you are out there) we decided to eat a little something. A 9 pm supper, especially fried Cajon seasoned food, is usually a mistake for old folks but it didn't bother us because the seasoning wasn't over done and the food wasn't greasy.
I had grilled catfish and a few french fries. Kathy had fried shrimp and catfish.
Both meals were excellent. The catfish was delicious and the fried shrimp and catfish were cooked perfectly. While it is a cozy venue, the sound system is excellent. Band a little loud but that's what bands do. I can't say enough about how friendly and warm the staff was. We will be back.
I love everything about this place...from the funky Cajun/South Austin vibe to the fantastic food! The Oysters Contraband and the gumbo are not to be missed. Other standouts are the Roast Beef po boy with Evangeline sauce, Chicken fried steak with salad, rice and a Cajun spiced cream gravy, and even the Lake Charles burger with delicious seasoned French fries. I’m a lunch regular, but there’s live music in the evenings as well. Check this place out if you haven’t yet!!!!
From the outside it’s easy to overlook in a nondescript shopping center but once you go inside you are transported to a Louisiana hangout. The food is nicely prepared and the staff is super friendly. PoBoy is big with tender shrimp. Gumbo and Étouffée are nicely seasoned and not pasty like I’ve had at other restaurants. I’m very excited to come back and try more of the menu!
Food was good. Was comparable to places I've been to in Louisiana.
My husband and I had the shrimp po boy lunch special. I had the fries and he had the red beans and rice. The sandwiches were very good, although they could have had a few more shrimp on them. The beans and rice was tasty with just enough spice. The fries were pretty average. The beer selection was limited. Our total bill, including alcohol, was under $30. Overall, a great dining experience.
It's the closest thing to feeling like I am back home in Louisiana...best and most consistent Gumbo in Austin! Curtis runs a great operation. The service is always on spot and super friendly!!
Evangeline is a place I remember to visit only occasionally, but the food is excellent, the atmosphere cozy, and on weeknights the music is lively. Did I mention the food is excellent? From the Louisiana hot wing appetizer to the Hank Williams platter, it’s all authentic Cajun and creole. The crawfish pies are especially good.
I shot some video t try to share the ambiance...don’t know if Google will let me upload it or not.
We always enjoy our meal when we come to Evangeline's, the fried pickles were one of our favorites in our most recent visit, chip style and very thin and crispy they were awesome. The cocktail sauce here is one of my favorite things, I get it every time I visit. Definitely recommend for the food, the friendly and attentive staff, and music on the weekends.
My friends and I ate there today and the food was absolutely delicious!!! I'm kinda suedo vegetarian so I passed on jambalaya and some of the other yummy Creole dishes I used to eat. I went for the fish mix dish with dirty rice and a salad. First of all, when it was brought to the table it looked sooooo good! I selected the broiled shrimp and fried catfish. Best Best food ever! Not fishy, perfect crunch, shrimp was heavenly! My new favorite place to eat. The waitress was a sweetheart too. Get ready for a down to earth atmosphere that isn't pretentious. It has its own charm because the people that were in there were so friendly! Pleasantly surprised all around good New Orleans creole cookin' and folks. Loved every minute of it! Please don't go! I want to have a seat next time I go and soon. ❤️
A special place in South Austin filled with hospitality and big easy ambiance wrapped up in old Austin vibes. Service is fantastic and food is tasty and hot. Seats are always filled and that is a sign of a well managed dining establishment.
Super thin onion rings were awesome . Excellent Shrimp po boy and pecan dessert was delicious . Great service and quirky little spot!
This place has been on our long over due to do list. Finally had dinner here on Saturday evening. Pretty small restaurant but they definitely use up all the space they can. We had a small wait as they were pretty busy when we arrived.
We started with some crispy fried frog legs which were better than I expected. I had the stuffed pork chop, and it left me desiring more taste. The description was loaded with flavor but it was just okay. My husband had the Alligator Sauce Plquante, which was very delicious. The kids had fried catfish which they devoured.
Had a great selection of beer, primarily Abita. Good wine list as well.
We will definitely be back, as that chicken fried chicken with spicy gravy was calling my name.
