This will be a bit longer review than done of my others, in part because there was a lot going on the evening we were there. First the food. It was very good. The cheese dip with bacon, amazing. We had the seared tuna - excellent I was told, and crab cakes as a meal; very good but small portion for the money. So the food experience was very good, albeit pricey for Waterville ME. Now the not so good. Simply put, the restaurant was, other than the outdoor dining and social distancing spacing between tables, not following the prescribed pandemic guidelines for service. No servers wore masks, menus were not single use, and were wiped down using the same cloth as other menus, no requirement customers wear masks to their table, paper towels in the bathroom were a standard kitchen roll standing up near the sink, meaning everyone who dried their hands touched it, no contact tracing info taken as far as we could tell. It's hard to point out all this stuff, as the staff was attentive, the chef came out to check on customers (again, without a mask), and the food was good. But we won't go back. We felt uncomfortable. Other may not. I just wanted to point out what our experience was that evening.

One of my favorite restaurants in the state. The food is always delicious, I've never been disappointed with anything that I've ordered. Great set menu with extensive daily specials. Everything is seasonal and fresh. Excellent cocktails and wine/beer selection, including NA beer. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. We always take visitors here and they have all loved it. An absolute gem!!

I love The Last Unicorn. I moved out of state for the past few years, and came back last year. I wanted to go to the Unicorn, so I checked the website, their Facebook, and Google to see the hours, then tried to go there last night. They were closed without hours on the door or any indication that they're ever open! Whether they are or not I won't make the trip to try again unfortunately. Beware of the posted hours.

I was born and raised in Waterville and the Last Unicorn was a staple local restaurant. Recently moved back after living away for a couple decades and could not wait to go to dinner here. Unfortunately it is under new ownership and they replaced many staples on the menu. Overall the food was average and the prices high. The fallen eggplant was recommend by the server, it was only ok. The pumpkin bread pudding was phyllo not bread. On the plus side, drinks were good and service good. No idea why the new owners are not staying more true to what worked for years. Prices too high for gravity of food served for sure. Update came back for another shot....wose than last time. Poor ingredients, over priced. Why the new owners messed with something that worked is beyond me. Wont be back and do not recommend.

Never thought that a small town in Maine would be home to such an amazing restaurant! Not only is the food delicious, the menu is so well rounded with foods both traditional and unexpected, we would have liked to taste everything on the menu if we could eat so much. The stuffed poblano was succulent, the potato pierogi the best we have ever had (and we have had pierogi in authentic Polish restaurants before). The short ribs were falling off the bone, with creamy mashed potatoes, the chicken wings fingerlicking good. All dishes we tried were very flavorful and perfectly seasoned. After eating like kings, what topped everything was the unbelievable cheesecake with pecan praline. The creaminess and flavor of the cheesecake has me now searching for a similar taste bud experience since, but nothing compares even here in my home city of New York! The food quality and menu are only matched by the friendliness and professionalism of the staff, in particular our host and waiter Paul. He took time to explain the items on the menu and detail, had interesting conversation with us about Waterville and beyond, and was a pleasure to interact with. Another big plus is that the Last Unicorn is located at a convenient location on a beautiful plaza with outdoor seating in the spring and summer, where we had the pleasure to dine last summer with an equally enjoyable experience; even though, even if at a different location, we would go out of our way to get there. We'll make sure to return every time we are in Maine!

The Last (time I’ll go to the) Unicorn Restaurant Call me sentimental, but I used to work at this restaurant during its Hay Day. I remember lines out the door with people waiting on the sidewalk to get in. I remember the food quality always being so high and unique. I wouldn’t call the prices to be exorbitant, rather competitive, but you always had a great evening regardless of how much you spent. Sadly, this is no longer the case. I went to this place last Friday, what a joke! One person, a very nice man was working the front, haggardly wearing the host hat as well as the waiter, busboy, and bartender hat. It’s funny because if all the other restaurants in Waterville that night weren’t overwhelmingly packed (even in COVID), one look at the prices would have made me get up and walk out. Who charges $24.99 for Chicken Parmesan? I can make it for $6.00. I stayed and ordered my favorite Cajun Salmon with basmati rice and a salad. The salad did not come before the meal as it usually does, probably because there was only one waitperson on that evening. The salmon came overdone and dry, but I was so hungry it didn’t matter. I can no longer recommend this place or refer to it as one of my favorites and it breaks my heart. Good luck to whomever is running this establishment. It may do well for now with all the overflow customers (those who really planned on going somewhere else). Once the new restaurant opens inside the new hotel, this place will struggle for sure. The Waterville community can’t afford its prices for the subpar food they serve, and with one person, up front running the show, the service is going to decline. The old cliche is true, "All good things must come to an end." Too bad because I used to love this place!
