I love Nordic food, so was excited to try Mikko on a recent trip to Washington. This is a fun restaurant just behind Dupont Circle. There is no indoor seating, but the outdoor space is colorful and fun on a summer evening. We shared their pickled herring small plate, which was truly excellent.
The entrées were a little disappointing. The lamb burger, chicken schnitzel and salmon were all fine, but didn't seem particularly Nordic. I'd love to have main dishes that I couldn't find elsewhere and had the unique flavors of Scandinavian. Overall, good food but a little mainstream. But the cocktails were great.

Stopped in for dessert on a recent evening. I sat inside at the counter / bar next to the food prep area (like at a sushi bar). There is also plenty of seating outside, if you'd prefer and if weather permits.
The lingonberry bread pudding was out of this world. The servings of Norwegian Linie Aquavit "high spirits" were exceedingly well flavored, driven by caraway, with notes of star anise, vanilla, and even a bit of coriander. If "high spirits" of golden color with a subtle sweetness sound intriguing, get in here and get some Linie Aquavit!
And, for another dessert, after your first dessert, get the salty licorice ice cream (it is sooooo good) that comes topped with a salty licorice lollipop! A lollipop!
This place is crazy wonderful! So good, in fact, that I came back for breakfast the next day. I had the ham and cheese quiche, and a large cup of Illy coffee with cream. Extraordinary! The cozy, colorful and happy surroundings are made even better by the attentiveness of the friendly servers, the manager, and the host or hostess. This is a go-to favorite for the local neighbors in the DuPont Circle community. And now it is my favorite too.

Tasty beet soup & crawfish soup, karjalan piirakka, & open faced sandwiches! Loved the color scheme of the restaurant and moomin characters.

The service was great. The food was good but nothing super standout. I’m not sure we’d return because we didn’t love the cuisine. Still, we enjoyed our experience and it was fun to try new things. Everything could have been seasoned a bit more. The desert was interesting - like a shortbread cookie with jam. My girlfriend loved it!

A really charming cafe with delicious Nordic food and nice service. I liked my brunch here, most of the dishes were quite good.
Ham & Cheese Quiche had a very pleasant and delicate flavor. And Smoked Salmon Benedict - delicious as well. There was a lot of hollandaise sauce and delicious salmon, one of the best Eggs Benedict that I have ever ordered. I also liked a fish soup because there was a lot of salmon in it. A wide range of pastry is also served here. We decided to try Karelian Pasty. It was not the best choice. I did not really understand it’s taste. However, they have the other pastry, delicious cakes and different tarts.

Charming patio off the sidewalk. Not too crowded, so the service was really prompt. The chicken schnitzel is filling and delicious, highly recommend. I might come back to do a glass of wine with the mousse to split, it was a decent sized appetizer with lots of little chips.

I had wanted to go to this place for a long time and finally went. It is a good place. The fresh food and the drinks are tasty. Everything was of excellent quality

I had to write a review when I found out about their breakfast. One Sunday morning, I wanted to avoid typical pastries or brunch places, and we walked about an hour in the neighborhood. I was so pleased from the moment I entered its small counter space-- surrounded by exotic snacks and goods, the display of their breakfast sandwiches was just stunning. It made our breakfast experience just like a little trip far away.

A great mix of Nordic culture and delicious ruokaa (food). Fazer sweets from Suomi (Finland) and great delicacies from Ruotsi (Sweden). If you like Moomins, there's some good merchandise there for it, too.

Mikko’s is one of my family and my favorite restaurants. We have dined-in, take out, and gotten catering for small parties and big holidays. The food and the service is wonderful and our guests are always excited about eating authentic Finnish and Scandinavian cuisine. I highly recommend trying Mikko’s because we go there regularly and will be back soon.

Good brunch and excellent prices. Mushroom omlette good. Smoke salmon Benedict good. Good gluten free options and seed bread substitute.

Had a nice peaceful lunch here! Loved the mushroom soup so much! Our server was quick and attentive. Food came out fast and delicious. Would definitely come back again when in the area for another meal.

So nice to be able to eat some authentic Scandinavian cuisine, they had lots of little swedish goodies and it was just an all around neat place.

Our Thursday night pre set dinner was delicious! You had your choice of starter and main then it was followed by desert with wine. The meal was Swedish inspired and when we spoke with Chef Mikko he said he’s thinking of doing a Norwegian one next. Can’t wait to try it!

I found the open faced sandwich & the French toast delicious, fresh, and well made.

Nordic drinks? Tasty snacks? Fun candy store inside? Yes, yes, and yes! I love going to this place for drinks with friends. They have stellar customer service, a cool vibe with lots of outdoor seating, and a drink menu with lots of surprises. Love it!

Went with my colleagues for dinner while staying in Downtown DC. Outdoor seating was great. We ordered the seared salmon and schnitzel . Everything tasted good. Would definitely go back there .

Chef Mikko's food is unbelievable. The taste of his food is completely unique, delicious and truly an experience. I had never experienced Nordic food before his catering and now am in love with it. I have had the privilege of stumbling across his catering on a few occasions and they have been some of my most memorable meals in DC.

Tasted the Shrimp Salad Skagen Sandwich, the strawberry roll, and the rhubarb cake from the menu — all equally delicious!
