Review Sushi Taro - Washington DC

Tetsuya Kaji
It has a cozy vibe suitable all occasions. The Resy website doesn’t accept reservation for one person, but you can reserve for two and add a note that it’s for one person (this is the official method the restaurant told me and it worked). They have my favorite healthy Okinawa food Goya Champuru in the menu. It was unfortunately sold out when I was there but gotta try it next time. Alternatively, I went for yaki-nasu shishito for my veggie appetizer. The eggplant was very tender and well-cooked so there was no “raw veggie” texture at all, and shishito added perfect crunchiness in mouth. I totally recommend it to everyone, including people who are usually not fans of eggplants. Imperial Wagyu sushi came with 3 pieces of Wagyu beef nigiri with Uni on top. Unlike regular Wagyu sushi, it was topped with fried garlic and kale and both Uni and Wagyu were seared. It made the nigiri very flavorful. I recommend tasting Uni and Wagyu separately for at least one piece to appreciate the building blocks of this rich tower of flavors. Buta Kara Shabu Shabu was a small pot that had a spicy broth in it and the pork and noodle to put in. After dipping for a minute, the pork catches a beginner-friendly level of spiciness from the pot, so if you are a fan of spicy food, make sure to scoop some broth into your bowl too. The noodle goes last and absorbs umami that was left in the pot. The portion is about a quarter of what the standard full shabu shabu meal offers, but it’s a fantastic addition to the table with other items. The price is rather on the higher side, but it’s not too expensive for authentic Japanese food.

I cannot speak highly enough of this restaurant. Host was so accommodating. Service was so great it was almost too much, and that’s a compliment. They had great information on ever fish and dish. SO many selections. The wine and beer is very Japanese, please try.

We took a spur of the moment trip to DC for a date night. We had a wonderful meal and great service. Left happy and full!

Love everything they served- even the desserts! Their fish selections were fresh and flavorful. Their chef is excellent, the cuts were clean. Most of their sushi already has wasabi included in between the rice and meat, so that’s something to note. But overall, I really love the food and ambience.

The omakase counter is one of the best dining experiences I have ever had!

Best sushi restaurant in DC. The spicy scallop roll is the best one I have ever had, has a huge scallop in each piece! The izakaya dishes are always delicious and so are all the sushi rolls/nigiri! Sushi Taro is authentically Japanese and never disappoints!

Had the omekase sushi experience. Wow. It was amazing. A great mixture of small plate set menu pieces intermixed with a sashimi course where you picked your fish from an amazing selection and finished with a sushi course with the same fish selection with rice. It was truly incredible. It is a challenge to get a reservation and it is quite expensive but was a truly memorable meal my wife and I will not forget. We will certainly do this again next time we are in DC. I cannot rate this high enough If you are a sushi fan.

We got the restaurant week menu and it was a good deal. The sushi tasted very fresh. The hojicha pudding was very good so I highly recommend. Overall everything was good but not like mind blowing haha. One thing I find kinda weird is why a high end restaurant like this doesn’t have better chopsticks (they use disposable chopsticks), so yea that could be an area to look into!

Sushi Taro was an absolutely lovely experience. I went with my brother who lives about 5 mins away while I was in town visiting. The service was impeccable and the food was fantastic. It was right after the snow storm and I was happy to see how many other people were still getting out and dining. My brother and I split everything and it was to die for. I know this is kind of random, but one of my highlights of the meal was the spicy mustard they served with the duck. I seriously could drink that mustard. I can’t wait for my next visit!

Had a lovely experience here. The sushi was delicious! The restaurant was clean and the staff were very friendly. Service was a bit slow though and it's a bit pricey but overall would recommend.

I went in 2017 and had a fantastic meal. The most memorable portion was the squid ink softshell crab. One day I will go back for the omasake meal, but for me, this is the best sushi in Dupont Circle if not all of DC.

Wow!! When we first walked in I was a little surprised that this place was a Michelin star. We came during restaurant week (menu attached) and every single dish was absolutely amazing! The freshest & most delectable fish my tastebuds have ever experienced, they were literally dancing. Decor was simple but elegant, was a nice environment and good service. This restaurant is definitely deserving of their star & highly recommend !

Highly recommend. I had an amazing experience at Sushi Taro. Booked a reservation for our wedding anniversary and the restaurant made it really memorable for us. Our orders were: Sushi tokujo, Tai Zohsui and a raw octopus tentacle dish. Service: Excellent. Tara was our server and she’s attentive to our enquiries. She also patiently explained the names of the dishes to us (we showed her google photos). They were quite flexible with my request for no tamago, include uni and roe sushi. Dishes: Excellent. The sashimi slices on the sushi and octopus tentacles was fresh. The porridge had this umami flavour, simply delightful. Each dish was also plated in a pleasing manner. Price: $$$$ as what google dictates. But it’s worth it. Experience: Excellent. The restaurant surprised us with a matcha dessert at the end of our meal to celebrate our anniversary. The mochi was soft and chewy, the brown syrup paired well with the ice-cream and jelly cubes. I really appreciated the kind gesture and extra mile that Sushi Taro went for us. Thank you (:

Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. Don’t be fooled by the small and shady entrance: the place is spacious and nicely themed. Also, it is located on 17th street food corridor which is youthful and picturesque. Lastly, everything we ordered was absolutely delicious which explains its Michelin level ratings!

Here for anniversary dinner but no one asked for dinning purpose today. Nothing special or photo taking moment happens like other fine dining restaurants. Kaiseki was 120 per person. We added some other food as well. All the food was good but service was not that attentive. If you want to be American style wow moment, you would probably be disappointed. Food is really good from appetizers to desserts. Sushi fish today was somewhat not that fresh. Lagging time between dish to dish was pretty long. I would do la carte only next time.

They tried to keep things clean (Had a gadget that disinfect the menu). Some what spacious for the size of the restaurant. Relatively not that expensive for a Michelin star restaurant. The fish was really fresh and the selection was good. Service was ok (no complaints...)
