Van's Pig Stand

Would I return? Yes. I was promptly greeted by all the ladies in the kitchen, not just the cashier - nice touch! This was my first visit. I had a few questions, and my questions were answered to my satisfaction 👍 I ordered the Pig Sandwich combo (pulled pork) with (homemade 'n' pleasantly)greasy curly fries. My meal was PROMPTLY brought out to the table. The sandwich was of an adequate portion. The pork was nice and moist & tender with good smokey hints & flavor (a bit light, though, for my personal preference - "your mileage may vary.") The meat itself was luke warm at best - * my reason for docking a ☆ on the review. The fries were fantastic! They were pleasantly soft on the inside with a nice crisp on the exterior. The BBQ sauce variety was a nice restaurant option, admittedly! The establishment was clean all around: floors, tables, restroom.

My anticipation for Van's was merited with our unexpected stop while traveling down I-40 in Oklahoma. We visited mid-afternoon on a Saturday, still pretty busy. We opted for the sandwich basket specials, she had the Piggy (pork) and I opted for the Brisket with Okra. Pulled pork was delicious and tender, my Brisket was a little chewy, probably rushed but tasted great. This location is only about 1 mile of the interstate, for some reason Google maps has it at a different location, needs updated.

Stopped for supper on I-40 and Van's did not disappoint. Tasty pulled pork (or maybe chopped is a better descriptor) on the pig sandwich-- I'm used to Arkansas barbecue, so I missed the coleslaw, but I didn't think about ordering it on the side until it was too late. The "Vanized" potato, a garlicky pit-cooked twice-baked bit of deliciousness, is a must-have side order. I have to say, I really like the staff here.

Normally good barbeque sandwiches. $7.25 for brisket sandwich. About $4 more if you add fries and a drink. Today (May 22) the meat tasted like it had been in a cooler and then reheated. Very dry also, I assume from the cooler. I have been going to Van's for about 58 years and this is the first bad sandwich I have received. 50 cent charge for water, which is fair.

My husband & I stopped here for lunch while in Shawnee and boy was it worth it. The food was great and the service was even better. While we were waiting for our food, the server came to our table and gave us a scratch off card. It is good for a free side item on our next visit which I promise, will be very soon.
