The best Eritrean in SF, and one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I've been going to Assab for 14 years now, and this family-run restaurant has always kept their standards high.

Assab Eritrean Restaurant was our first try at African cuisine and it was great! First of all the portions are huge!!! like ridiculously huge! We ordered one vegetarian and one meat combo (not family style) and the plate was so big! Everything tastes really good. I love their pita, it's sour and super tasty! We also one vegetable and one meat sambusa! crunchy and tasty they were the perfect start to a delicious meal. It's messy food, and the best way to eat it is the ditch the utensils and just use pita to scoop the food! The service is kinda slow during rush hour but it's well worth it!

Interesting experience. I've never had Eritrean good before so it was really fun to eat using your hands from a shared plate, using the bread to scoop the food. The appetizers we order were delicious, but they came with the wrong filling - we order the beef but got the vegetable one. Overall a nice experience, good for parties of 3 or more people.

Great staff. Complete menu. Perfectly spiced, enjoyed by the spicy-phobic as well. Veggie dishes very filling. Nice music. Con: absolutely no alternatives for adults or kids that don't want Eritrean foods.

As a vegan, my go-to order is their veggie platter which offers a variety of unique flavors from all the other Eritrean/Ethiopian restaurants I've tried in the Bay Area and SoCal. It tastes so home-cooked and comforting. The ambience is great for a date and family dinner. My non-vegan family enjoyed their samosas very much. Even my 8 y.o. niece who's very picky with foods! They also have the best injeras I've ever tried. The only thing I wish they'd improve on is the service of their older male server who can be grumpy at times.

My friend who is vegetarian and she picked this place to eat. They have meat dishes too. It's kinda off the foot path and has been there for many, many years. I'm so glad to finally try it! We both ordered the vegetarian combo but substituted the okra with some other vegetarian choice. The menu is a little complicated to understand if you're trying to substitute, but the food we got was amazingly good. Fresh, colorful, wonderful selection of well-prepared potatoes, carrots, bell peppers & zucchini. The injera crepe is not as sour as I thought it would be. It was a lot of food for one person, we probably could have a shared one combo, but we ate it all!

Very interesting experience, if it's your first time trying Ethiopian/Eritrean cuisine - get ready to dig in with your hands (though utensils are available, if you'd prefer that). The food certainly felt homemade from the start, and it was clear this was a family-run operation. The waitress (who was the daughter, I believe) told us they start cooking many of the dishes each morning, from scratch, with family recipes. Very attentive service, and a great place to try a new ethnic cuisine. Glad we went!

Very nice and modest neighborhood Eritrean/Ethiopian restaurant. Previously had ordered take-out from here and liked it enough to come back and dine in this time. Ordered the beef roundtip place (Kelfi?) and the veggie sampler. Way more than enough for two people to share. Comes with a generous serving of anjari (bread). Service is friendly and prompt in this family run restaurant and we both left full and satisfied. Loved loved loved the beef dish. It has this rich sauce that reminds me of mole and has such depth of flavor, it's amazing.

This was my first experience with Eritrean cuisine. The food is extremely flavoursome and prepared to perfection. Their sambusa was an Indian samosa with an interesting twist. The concept of eatingwith hands in a large dish was fascinating. Their lentils were yummy. Must try

My husband and I have gone to Assab Restaurant several times, the food is always excellant and hot. The service is very good, very pleasant and no long waits. This is a family run restaurant, husband and wife and sometimes daughter. We have totally enjoyed this restaurant for several years and will continue to go as often as we can.
