Great new bakery, perfect for hiking supplies! (4/5 Green Stars)
Downsides first: the layout could be improved and the young chap who served me was a bit surly – but neither of these things bothered me (and the chap was fast :). The coffee and pastries were both very good and I’m wavering between 4 and 5 stars, but I’m going to go for 5 stars because prices were reasonable and it’s really one of the best places that I know of within a radius of a 2 or 3 miles – that’s the approx. distance to La Farine or Timeless Coffee ;) And speaking of La Farine, I think my plain croissant from L’acajou was every bit as good as theirs. (Perhaps Andrew C. visited on an off-day.) Their cookies were pretty good, but the standouts for me were the cheddar chipotle biscuit and the banana bread – both very memorable. Also – organic, fair-trade coffee for around $2? Yes please!
I’m also giving them 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons:
• Nomadic Coffee: All of the coffee is organic, most is fair trade certified, and some is even Smithsonian bird-friendly (that’s pretty much the highest sustainability standard for coffee). Nomadic seem like a good bunch.
• Waste minimization at L’acajou was pretty good. I had my own cup but forgot to notice if there was a cup discount.
• Decent selection of vegetarian options, and a vegan salad.
• They do seem to use organic quinoa and greens for some of their veggie options.
This place is amazing! The breakfast sandwiches and the almond croissant are among the best I have ever had. It's truly gobsmacking that this place doesn't have a line out the door. Get to this spot and enjoy it while it lasts. Soooo good!
They serve açai bowls, which is nice, but they are very small so make sure you order something else to supplement the bowl or be prepared to stand in line to order something again.
Also be prepared that there is very little seating inside and only one table outside that I saw.
Sandwich + salad at lunch was delicious and a lot of food. Got the Moroccan Lamb sando and the Vegan salad and loved both. Spicy, fresh sandwich with a hearty, roasted veggies and nuts salad.
Amazing bakery and sandwich shop. The flavor combinations are incredible. Super nondescript and you might barley notice it on the busy corner despite the colorful paint job. But excellent hand made pastries and delicious breakfast and lunch options.
The pastries here are really good, but the cinnamon rolls in particular are the best I've ever had. They're not bready/doughy like most other places, they're rich and buttery (soft on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside), with an intense cinnamon glaze, and a touch of lemon which brightens up the cinnamon flavors without being citrusy. Eating one is always an "experience" for me.
Best Cafe around! Their pastries are some of the tastiest I've ever had and I often get their breakfast sandwich which is SO good. Plus the people who work here are incredibly friendly.
i never had such tasty cinnamon rolls in my life
I took a 6 month gig around the corner from L'acajou and I went here almost every day! Everything on the menu is delicious, but I highly recommend the cheddar chipotle breakfast sandwich and the quinoa bowl. They also do a lunch combo deal where you can get a half sandwich with either a bowl of soup of a salad for only $11. Staff was very friendly as well. I will miss coming here every day! <3
Got a cheese sandwich with arugula and bacon, as well as a cappuccino. Both were competently made, although the cheese sandwich was a bit shy on the cheese.
Would go back for brunch - they also make good looking egg dishes. Nothing to write home about regarding the location / look - just a solid coffee-and-a-sandwich place.
Best baked goods since Tartine!
Now, don't get me wrong. There are a few places in town that are sharing that second place spot (No one beats Tartine), such as Hey, Cookie and Pinkies on Folsom. However, I've been to L'acajou Bakery twice now and both times I've been more than pleased. Morning buns, cookies, muffins...all AMAZING. From a muffin with espresso baked in, to a chocolate chip cookie with crystalline ginger sprinkled in. Wow. Good stuff. Complimented by the most reasonably priced cup of Ritual Coffee ($2) you'll ever find. Which was equally amazing by the way.
Holy Crap! Did I mention the hot food? I had a Moroccan Lamb sandwich that knocked my socks off. DAMN. Good brunch menu too!
I took off a star because the owner is ALWAYS there and he looks/acts like he hates everyone and everything. Kinda puts a damper on it.
I'll keep this simple and say that their food was the best I've ever tasted. It's obvious that the chef/baker pours love into her recipes. The Banana Bread is top shelf. Go!
