Review Genki Ramen - San Francisco

A hole-in-the-wall with ambience and moody lighting, serving tasty food behind a medieval-looking door. This restaurant always looked closed, but I finally decided to open the door today to order the Chashu Braised Pork Belly, the first item on the menu posted on the window, to go. Inside were beautiful hanging lights and an assortment of plants that gave the place a cozy atmosphere. There was only one other customer who was about to leave at the time I entered. After ordering and paying over $8 ($7 +taxes), I asked the cashier if it was always that empty and she said no. Apparently, there used to be lots of customers before the pandemic, but since it was a barbeque place, they needed special tables. It's a small restaurant with a small storefront, and next to a parking lot, so there isn't really room to build a parklet or put tables outside. I got my food about nine minutes after ordering, in a medium-sized paper bag, which felt a little light. When I got home, I excitedly opened the bag to see what was inside. It was three pieces of pork belly (which, by the way, is one of the cheaper cuts of pork) inside a tiny aluminum container, with a piece of arugula on top. I was a bit underwhelmed. Each piece was about the size of two Chapstick containers side-by-side. The pork belly was very tender and basically melted in my mouth. It was some great pork belly, and because it was protein and fat, it was filling. Still, I expected more. This is a nice hole-in-the-wall that most people walk past without thinking. The service was excellent and the food was delicious, but I expected more than three pieces of pork for the price. However, based on other reviews, the ramen is probably fantastic. I really want to give five stars, but my experience was worth four stars.

Really good ramen! The bbq pork is super tender and delicious. Egg was cooked perfectly.

Really good veggie ramen with tofu & super cheap drinks! Looks quiet, almost closed, but definitely worth going in

Feeling pretty lucky to stumble across this place today - it's my new favorite ramen spot in SF! Enjoy.

This place is killer and has some of the best ramen in the city. It's always pretty busy in here and you'll see why when you order. The broth in all the ramen warms your body like your grandma's famous chicken noodle, only with a little Asian twist. The happy hour is pretty great for beer and the prices overall are unbelievable considering how much and how good the food is. They're always playing great Top 40 radio in here too, always a party!

This is our go-to place for delivery ramen, but he restaurant itself never seems to be super busy so when we go there in person. I'd probably give it a 3.5 out of 5 given the option, but the fact that delivery is generally quick and the food still hot gives it that extra 0.5. I've only ever had the ramen, but I'm assuming if you're looking at the restaurant you're primarily interested in ramen. I've yet to have a bad experience and I've had everything from the Chasu, Kimchi, to the Butter ramen (I've gone through the entire list). Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for decent ramen without much of wait. Sure, there are better places in the city, but sometimes I just want it delivered or not wait an hour to eat. My only real complaint would be that when the ramen is delivered the soup base isn't labeled with which ramen it comes with. Some soups use the same base, but it isn't particularly obvious at times until it's too late...

Great ramen for a reasonable price with other tasty side dishes

Came here for their late happy hour, which starts at 10pm. Lots of great snacks and appetizers for $3 to $5. We got complementary salads, and got edamame and chicken karaage to start. We also got a great watermelon slushie, which was quite refreshing. For ramen, we had the garlic tenderous rib ramen and the chasu ramen. Both were delicious and hearty, rather reliable. Not a bad place for ramen, though as with all ramen places, expect to be thirsty afterwards!

I dont eat ramen very often, but this place has amazing ramen if you are hung over. I woudl reccomend getting the tonkatsu curry with extra oil, you will thank me later. Thier happy hour is pretty good, though you have to get there at the time time. Never really croweded, but never really empty. Great spot.

By far my favorite Ramen place in SF! The ladies who serve here are super sweet. Chicken Katsu and Chicken Karaage are my favorite ramen choices to get. The Curry Veggie Rice dish is always a great go-to!

FOOD: 1.) Chashu Ramen - yummm craving ramen and this hit the spot. Taste kinda reminds me of like egg noodle, soup was good though. 2.) Beef Onion Skewer - yum *loved the selection on their menu :) Def willing to come back to try stuff.. Maybe during their happy hour for the appetizers! SERVICE: Good ATMOSPHERE: It's nice, clean, spacious, Japanese feel

Get the unagi tempura! Had to put that in first in case you're just skimming reviews. The perfectly crunchy exterior with the warm unagi taste is a match made in heaven. It's good enough that I'll likely be special requesting it at Japanese restaurants here and there from now on. Although they say they are basted with soy sauce, I swear the tasty little asparagus bacon robatayaki we had was covered in sweet bbq sauce. I kind of wish I had tried more of the non-ramen dishes like the okonomiyaki but since ramen was in the name, I had to give it a go. For the record, if you have a craving for ramen, this will put the hungry monster to rest. But if you're going to rate the ramen as ramen then there's more to it. The broth was average, the noodles were subtly too hard, and the pork was pretty decent. The egg was on its way to being great but yolk didn't fully achieve that gooey texture nor did the egg white soak in enough flavor. So like I said, the ramen is good enough to quell a craving, but I'm sure there are better ramen shops in SF so stick to the rest of the menu. Unagi tempura... mmm....
