Review Wise Sons Deli - San Francisco

American Angler
I'm stopping at Wise Sons Jewish Deli, because I was in the Filmore to drop off a (new to her) set of dentures to my old neighbor Ragtime Jubilee Johnson, she saw them in a second hand store in the Haight and only had enough money to put them on hold. So she called upon me to drive all the way from Napa to pay for and pick up a set of used dentures, and hand deliver them. They were 8 bucks and she put a dollar down to hold them, but it's a lot of money for Jubilee, so I was happy to get them, along with the hot Corned Beef on dill rye, I got one for her too so she could test out her new teeth. The sandwich was spectacular!

The most delicious bagels. So fresh and warm and really great size too! My husband said the coffee was amazing too.

Breakfast was hard to find within a short distance from our hotel other than the hotel’s buffet (not a fan of all you can eat). Found this gem and was not disappointed. I had the sesame bagel with salmon smear and it was divine! I wish there was a Wise Sons back home. Hubby got the server recommended breakfast burrito and was not disappointed. Fully stuffed with a delicious salsa verde on the side. Loved looking at all of the photos on the wall, too.

Get the chicken salad if they have it on special; best ever. The corned beef: You just can't find anything as good anywhere in the West Coast! Chocolate babka worth a Seinfeld-level public meltdown.

We got a drip coffee and the bodega breakfast bagel. Overall it was pretty good but the egg needed salt or sauce because it lacked flavor. Would’ve been hard to eat without the coffee.

No complaints! Breakfast bagel tastes as good as it looks and not a bad price for SF- $9 before tip. Service is excellent. Thanks for a great lunch!

Just stopped by here for the first time this week and I'm very happy I did! I love bagels and these had the perfect amount of toppings, and cream cheese. The bagel itself was really good, crunchy and soft... so fresh! Better than what I had in NYC. The best bagel I've had in a long time, I'm looking forward to going back!

Two Classic Smoked Salmon on Everything bagels and one on Salt and Pepper. Fast service, delicious bagels, nice staff. We'll definitely be back when we're in town!

We ordered the lox bagel. The lox was pretty well done and fresh. They just put onion and capers so we had to ask them to add tomatoes and cucumbers. And they were sweet enough to add!

Everything about this place makes me happy. The killer playlists, Stumptown coffee, prompt and friendly service and the menu. If I lived nearby I would come here everyday. We had the everything bagel with hot pastrami and it was absolutely delicious. I enjoyed my cappuccino but felt it was a little weak - though this is hopefully a one off. We sat inside and had a really calm, lovely breakfast. I would definitely go back.

I judge food if it doesn't make me feel tired or have digestion issues and this place hit those marks. The only thing I would fix is the gust of cold wind in the winter if you dine indoors..

Delicious! The pastrami sandwiches are great and the service was friendly and prompt. There's a small seating area in the front, so you can eat there. I got carry out and hung out while the food got ready. I go to the one in the Mission location for breakfast and the one in the CJM on Mission St when I'm downtown. Each one has a different feel, but the food quality seems the same. This location is just outside of Japantown has a busy outside with all walks of life.

When I moved to California I gave up my bagel habit. As a native New Yorker I just couldn't find anything close to what I knew from home, and given the calorie count of your average bagel, I decided it just wasn't worth it to keep consuming things that made me unhappy. I definitely subscribe to the NY water theory and I question whether I'll ever find a bagel out here that I like. That said, this might be the first place I've had a California bagel that I didn't hate. I tried an everything bagel - I found it to be chewy on the inside, slightly tough towards the center of the bagel but otherwise almost a proper texture and consistency. On the outside, a light gold color, crunchy and slightly blistered, and covered in all kind of seeds that fell everywhere while eating it - exactly what should happen with an everything bagel. I appreciated the range of seeds as well, not just sesame and poppy but caraway, onion, garlic, a bit of salt. Lots of flavor here. I also tried the pastrami smoked salmon bagel sandwich. I'd probably give it 4 stars. Some of it was a total miss - the tomato was mealy and sliced way too thin, the cucumbers didn't taste super fresh. Some of it was great - the salmon was thick, pastramied on the edges, fatty, and melted in my mouth. I do wish there was more of it, but what was there was great. The scallion shmear wasn't overpowering in scallion flavor and was applied liberally. As a sandwich, it was ok, though I found that certain elements overpowered others, and I enjoyed it more when I ate the good pieces separately. Overall, I wasn't disappointed. I'll likely come here again when I'm having a serious bagel craving, but at $13 for the sandwich, it's way too overpriced to change my bagel habit anytime soon.
