Review Z & Y Restaurant - San Francisco

First, above all, the food was fantastic. Had reservations for Christmas, got there and they didn't have us. Luckily I had my confirmation and we were Sat fairly quickly. They were of course very busy. If you want duck, you do need to order in advance. We didn't. Everything was good except the hot and sour soup which was fine but not great. They did put cilantro in a bunch of the food which Chinese restaurants usually don't so if you are adverse like me, make sure you remember to tell them not to. Luckily I could pick it out. Stand outs were the spicy beef with pancakes and the Dan Dan noodles

Wanted to try this place because it was recommended on Michelin. Ratings were not so high so we were cautiously optimistic. We got there at 10:45 and Google said they open at 11:30. We asked the guy said sternly that they open at 11:30. We felt a little put off since they had the door open and they have this sign that says they “reserve the right to refuse service to anyone” which also was a little off putting. We walked around and came back at 11:15 and there were others waiting for the restaurant to open. A little surprised. We waited for them to open and they didn’t open a single minute before 11:30 which was really annoying. They could have let us sit down at least and let us browse the menu. We ordered the sour fish with numbing spice. The fish was cut thicker than we normally have it but the flavoring was amazing. The fish even though it was too thick was silky. Amazing. The soup is amazing. Not as spicy as our go to restaurant for this dish. Only place we drank the soup, it was that good. We also got the chef special clams in wine. Cooked just right. Very good as well. The cauliflower with preserved meat was served in a dish they put over some jelly flame. The flavoring is the best I’ve ever had of this dish. While we were waiting for our food, some other people got their dish and it smelled amazing. Even though we had ordered too much food we order that fried chicken dish also. Not as authentic since they breaded it and the authentic style is with no breading. The breading definitely made the dish not as good as it could be. All in all everything was above our expectation. We also ordered the pur er tea, was very good as well. Warning, the folks in front of us ordered two dishes and was shocked by the bill. Our criticism is that they should have looked at the prices before ordering. This place is expensive, but very good. Highly recommend trying at least once. Attitude could have been a little more friendly.

Heard great things about Z&Y so stopped in with friends while visiting SF! Waited about 30 minutes for dinner on a busy Saturday night. Staff is friendly and helpful with the menu, food comes out quickly once ordered. The best soup dumplings I’ve had in a long time, very rich and great texture. The mala fish was fantastic as well as the Mongolian beef and green beans. You really can’t go wrong with the menu! Filling and a good price per person when shared. Definitely recommend.

the stir fried cabbage with chili peppers is truly amazing. everything here is great, but this cabbage is really exceptional. you’re probably thinking, “it’s just cabbage,” but you’re wrong. it’s phenomenal. every time i come here i try different things, but i always get the cabbage, and you should too.

Was recommended this place by my niece who lives in SFO. I realized later that it is a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant... And the other claim to Fame is that Pres. Obama ate here! The food loved up to the Michelin expectations. Coming from Singapore, I am very familiar with Sichuan chilli / mala flavours. But this restaurant manages to do the balance of flavors amazingly well. The chili spice is not overwhelming, the other flavors come through too. Unlike in many Sichuan places where the chili is overpowering as also the chili oil. Z & Y manages to do the perfect balance. But do note that if you cannot handle spice then give the spicy dishes a miss! The pricing is a bit on the expensive side! It was super crowded on a Friday evening, but the tables turn pretty quickly, so wait times won't be too long. Overall well worth the visit... And would like to definitely come back again!

Be prepared to wait on line ! Food: Looking at the menu literally, made me want to order everything but since I was with family, it was hard to order many spicy options and certain dishes due to food allergies. Beef Pancake was amazing!! Aromatic, fresh with a perfect balance of flakey and crunch with a savory beef , that was my first bite. Now the second bite, was the same awesomeness but I got an amazing sauce that was in there as well; the surprise made me smile and I absolutely loved this app and looking to find in NY. Spicy Dumplings, ordered twice! It was a perfect balance of lusciousness of spicy and savory ! Fried Noodle w/ Pork- mouth watering, just thinking of this and all the food! Took an order to go, perfect balance of savory, crisp yumminess topped with a marinated luscious pork. Explosive Chilli- SPICY zestful perfection, the fried chicken in it was juicy and crunchy, I really like this dish just wish that it had less red flakes ! Be careful with them unless you want to turn red! Fried Rice- fresh and tasteful, great compliment to the explosive chili. Service: quick and to the point Atmosphere: Fine, doesn't really matter , the food it worth it all. Summary, I would stop by again when in San Fran but I'll be honest , I only found this gem because I googled top favorites restaurants of Anthony Bourdain.

Good Sichuan Flavor. Taste of spicy chicken is authentic but the size of chicken cube is kind of too large. Beef stripe beyond my expectation.

The food here is really good! Go here for lunch (as we did) as the queues for dinner are huge (we tried to get in the night before hand and ended at a nearby restaurant…..as I was so hungry and the wait was huge). The spicy Sichuan dumplings are delish! Hot, spicy, mouth numbing goodness. Best I’ve had (better than my travels to Asia). The Kung Pao chicken was great, the duck rolls are great and the pork/cabbage dumplings were good. I highly recommend….especially for lunch as you will get a table immediately.

This one was a pleasant discovery. Good food, loved the flavours. There was a 15-20 mins wait for lunch on a Saturday afternoon however the wait was worth it. A perfect place for people who love spicy food. The dumplings are a must try here.

This will be simple. We really enjoyed this place! From our host/waiter Mark and another waiter Jayden and everyone else we encountered working there to the food, just a top notch place. The place was crowded and as we learned, it really wasn’t according to Mark compared to the weekends. One of our hotel staff at the Marriott Union Station front desk(Rob)referred us to the Z & Y and he nailed it. This place is a must experience!!!

Not all that. I was glad that when we arrived there was no line because it is not worth waiting for. Our waiter took over 10 minutes to return to take our order and they were less than 1/2 full at that time. Food came quickly and we may have ordered more but he dropped check and we decided to go elsewhere and eat again! They seem to be living on their past reputation and not really give a S***T anymore. Judging by the line that grew by 6 pm I suppose they don't have to but it will end at some point if they don't start to care...........

The food was delicious. We had the pot stickers, scallion pancakes, dry sautéed green beans (cooked perfectly), chicken with explosive chili pepper, and wonderful house special fresh fish filet boiled in house spicy sauce. (The titles don't come close to explaining how delicate these dishes were). Originally, we had no idea what to order so we had our waitress decide for us. She did an amazing job. The rest of the wait staff were very attentive. Great dinner Place is small, and wait can be 30-40 minutes, but worth it. There are others places around this restaurant, but they have very few customers. Will definitely come back.

Amazing food - great experience up until the waiter offered me if I paid cash I'd get a 5% discount. And all of a sudden he didn't speak English when I asked for an itemized bill and he got angry when I refused to tip. 5 stars for the food 1 star for the aftertaste leaving the place.

Yes. This place was a recommendation from a local and though I waited 30 min in line I found out within the first bite why I had to wait. Just amazing food. I like my food spicey and this was almost too spicey which NEVER happens for me. So I was very pleased. I tried the spicey pig feet pot OMG delicious. Must go if you haven't.

It was too spicy in my opinion seemed more Indian than Chinese I liked the ambiance and decoration Staff a bit harsh, not speaking much English so it was hard to communicate. I think is a place to visit in the city somehow watch out with leaving stuffs in your car, ours was opened by breaking rear passenger window and robbed some things we had there and the vehicle was in front of the door of restaurant, incredible!!!!

I have never posted a bad review on any restaurants before & this will be my first Service is extremely bad!! The staff just drop the menu on the table and back facing us with no respect. Furthermore, they gave us their most sulky face while talking to us (as if we have owed them a million dollars). What's worse, they even have the cheek to ask us for service tip when there's no service at all!! May I understand what's the definition of giving tip? Please note that you only get tip when you deserve it. No apology from them at all! Food is totally not up to standard; we have eaten better Sichuan food in San Francisco. Not too sure why Michelin has awarded this restaurant

Great place to visit , genuine old style Chinese restaurant with simply the best Chinese food you will ever taste . Great if you like your Chinese food a little more spicy 🌶

I show up with my mom and after we wait about a reasonable 20 minutes, I notice the staff wasn't hospitable as I saw that the host that took my mom and I to our table just threw the menus on the table the moment we were finally seated. I ignore and and dont give it much thought at the moment. I am skipped in the queue so they can take my order (I give them the benefit of the doubt as I see they are a popular restaurant) I then finally get my food and start to eat some very good Chinese food, when about half way into my meal the older waiter comes and leaves the bill at the table (I didn't notice him doing this to anyone else), I ignore it and continue eating. 5 minutes later the same waiter comes and tells me politely to pay the bill and to leave already. I look around and see the restaurant is about 75 percent full. This is the same waiter that just a few minutes ago checked in with other people at a different table (people that have been seated at a table since I first showed up and waited) and asked them how their food was. I politely told him that I'll pay in a bit, he then raised his voice at me and asked "Are you sure you'll be able to pay?". I then got up, (not before finishing my plate haha) paid the bill, and left.

The food is excellent. Very rich in flavor and portion sizes. Staff is knowledgeable about the food.

It was a great experience sharing our table with people from all over. The food was great but sharing amazing food with strangers at a common table gives hope of a better world.

Everything is spicy, but not stomach busting. It’s lip tingling good. Frog legs in a Chinese dish! What! Good!

Without a doubt the best sichuan food I've ever eaten !

Amazing. Bar none best Chinese food we have ever had. So fun that normal dishes are glorious but also a cool variety of blazing hot dishes. More than a few people people blowing their noses and red eyes lol.

Found this place as a second choice...ABC was recommended and we were ignored! We left and found Y & Z and were absolutely THRILLED with the food and the service. One of the best szechuan meals I've ever had. It was expensive but I'd go back tomorrow if we weren't leaving to fly home. If you like excellent spicy chinese food, eat here!
