Review Mama's On Washington Square - San Francisco

Wilson Lorensyah
A good brunch place but can’t agree more to other reviews that place is a little cramped, but it’s definitely worth it to queue for less than an hour The crab benedict is good and french toast is bomb! The unpeeled potatoes were perfectly cooked and crispy still, and the sweet jam sauce was a perfect pair - taste like a cranberry sauce in the sweeter side. However, parking is a bit hard too so might need to get uber or try your luck to find one.. Worth the hype and good brunch place!

The space was a little cramped, but it made the whole experience feel like you were eating on the kitchen at your childhood home and I think that vibe made up for it. The eggs were somehow fluffy and creamy all at once, and the fresh orange juice was addicting. Everything tasted amazing. Highly recommend going first thing on a Saturday before the line gets too long. That being said, there wasn't much of a wait when we arrived (9am on a Saturday).

Food is awesome, staff is also really friendly and thoughtful. We had our two baby stroller inside together with our pup (seated at the end of the restaurant so our dog wouldn’t disturb other customers as well) they gave us the best service and our dog got so many good doggy treats too. Our go-to brunch place when we’re in town.

Came here based on a recommendation and it did not disappoint. The Monte Cristo sandwich was amazing. Perfectly cooked, light golden brown and just the right temperature inside (not cold). Service was quick and staff was very friendly. They even treated us to an anniversary carrot cake which was fantastic. It's a small place but we managed to find a seat right away. Overall a terrific place to have a meal.

Had a great brunch here with my boyfriend. I had the dungeness crab Benedict which is quite pricey being a local crab, but delicious nonetheless. My boyfriend had the breakfast sandwich, which was also a great meal. Depending on when you go you'll be seated in less than 20min, however, during rush brunch hour it can take some time to get a table.

Deserving of its award of best breakfast. Such good, rich food. The bread for the french toast is what made the dish a true 11/10. Delicious pancakes and the best fresh fruit. Also nice coffee drinks. We had a little bit of a wait to get in, but the staff were quick to get tables bussed for the next group. Food was a bit of a wait, but for how small the kitchen is and packed it was, totally understandable.

First time here 7 in our party. Everyone enjoyed the food. We celebrated 2 peoples birthday.everyone was super pleasant.pancakes great.pan dore yummy. French toast combo must have.
ok go
First time eating here and the food definitely did not disappoint! I had the Lox and Bagel with smoked salmon which was so refreshing and so delicious and my husband had the Norwegian smoked salmon eggs Benedict and both were amazing! Highly recommend this spot for breakfast/lunch. Make sure you go super early because there will be a line for breakfast! Lunch time usually does down and isn't as busy and they still serve breakfast items which is great!

Mama's deserves a higher rating over 4.5. The southern border might be a mess these days but I had a south of the border omelette and it was really good. I really like the Spanish chorizo in it. There was one smiling nice and warm server that made the service high level. If you're in the north beach area in SF and craving some good brunch, visit Mama's and you'll love it.

"Mammas" is undeniably a top-notch choice for breakfast in San Francisco, and my wife and I had an exceptional dining experience there. The moment we stepped inside, we were charmed by the quaint and homey interior, which exuded warmth and comfort. The open kitchen added an exciting element to the atmosphere, allowing us to witness the culinary magic in action. Now, onto the star of the show – the French toast sampler. It was a breakfast dream come true. This sampler allowed us to explore a range of delectable flavors, from the comforting banana bread to the more adventurous options like the cranberry and orange. Each slice was perfectly cooked, achieving that ideal balance of crispness on the outside and a melt-in-your-mouth interior. To complement our breakfast, we ordered vanilla lattes. The coffee was expertly brewed, and the infusion of sweet vanilla added a delightful twist. It was a harmonious blend of flavors that provided the perfect caffeine boost to kickstart our day. Leaving "Mammas" was bittersweet, but one thing's for sure – we'll be back. This charming eatery left an indelible mark on us, and we can't wait to return for more French toast adventures and those heavenly vanilla lattes. If you're in San Francisco and appreciate a warm ambiance, diverse breakfast options, and exceptional coffee, "Mammas" is an absolute must-visit.

Mama's is known for their Monte Cristo sandwich and it did not disappoint! Big servings, responsive service, cozy ambiance. We chose a table al fresco to enjoy the lovely day and greenery of Washington Square. Will come back for the Monte Cristo!

The history of the establishment really peaked my interest. The food and service from the entire team was exceptional. Many may have the opinion that the line is a deterrent. But understand the wait is well worth it. Treating the wait in phases really helped to take in the process from start to finish. In fact moments move through a warm and genuine experience as if you were being served your Mamas breakfast. Great for a brunch moment with your friends or morning with family. I would recommend this spot to any and all. Enjoy

We got here at about 7:50 on a Sunday morning and ended up being 5th in line to order. The service is friendly and quick and attentive. Pancakes and bacon are delicious!!

Great food Loved the French toast 10/10 the coffee and egg Benedict were also really good but I definitely recommend getting the French toast!!

Beautiful and atmospheric classy-diner feel. Gorgeous location for outdoor dining. Yummy omelets, potatoes, and free coffee refills!

We waited well over an hour to eat here. Once inside, you wait again but it wasn’t too bad. We ordered and I could t beleiveniced tea was $5.50. (We were told they give refills, but we were never checked on for a refill.) Two omelets, pancakes and 2 Teas was $76. FYI. We found a table outside which we were very happy about! When the food came, the girl said “this is our homemade jam we make fresh w wry day.” It was only on one plate, and she said “do you want some too?” Ugh yes, (obviously). IT NEVER CAME! We def won’t be back

Charming intimate restaurant. Warm service with fantastic food. I could ask for nothing more but to go back and dine here again.

This is my favorite breakfast spot in the world, hands down. The service is great, the ambiance is great and homey, and the line is worth it. But the monte cristo man, the MONTE CRISTO is out of this world. And the jam. You really cannot ask for a better sandwich than this. If I could I’d made the 6 hour drive up for this sandwich alone. I debated 3 or 4 stars, but in the end had to slide to 3. I arrived with high expectations and they just weren't met. Had to wait in line outside for just under 2 hours. The staff is great. Super friendly. Attentive at the table. But we went here because I was craving eggs benedict and mine was, well, sad. There was just nothing special about it. Nothing at all. The sauce was so-so. The eggs were done perfectly, but the Canadian bacon was bleh. There was nothing special about the muffin. I had planned to eat it, even though I'm low-carb and almost almost always skip bread. It was easy to choose to skip it on the spot. And since I eat low carb, I asked for no potatoes. I got my dish without potatoes, but the kitchen had done absolutely nothing to garnish the plate. Two lonely eggs benedict looking forlorn on a big white plate. My wife, on the other hand, ordered the salmon scramble. It was delicious. And she said her potatoes were, too. The mimosas were good, as well.

Stumbled upon Mama’s during our visit in December and on a Friday morning we waited about 45 minutes outside getting there a little after 8 am. The food was absolutely delicious - I had the cinnamon French toast with a side of bacon and grapefruit juice. My wife had the Monte Cristo and a pancake with berries, and her’s too was delicious. The staff are very friendly and polite and the food hits your tables almost right after you sit down. Was back visiting this weekend and had to take my daughter. We went on Sunday and got there about 9:30. We waited 2.5 hours but the food was well worth the wait. We both had French toast, me the cinnamon with fresh fruit & my daughter the chocolate cinnamon with fresh fruit. We both had bacon, and a side of scrambled eggs. I normally don’t eat eggs but these were so fresh & delicious. My daughter even skipped adding ketchup they were so good. Once again the staff was exceptionally friendly and provided great service. Talking to a staff member outside, if the line reaches the back door of Mama’s you’re looking at 45-60 min wait from there, so you can gauge your wait looking at the line. I’ll be going to Mama’s for breakfast every time I visit SF.

Okay okay okay... so the other reviews on this place are pretty spot on. We came here based off the 3.5k reviews and 4.5 Stars on yelp. The line was long but we met locals in the morning who told us what to order. The French toast sampler is basically to die for. Who ever thought to make banana bread into French toast!!?!?! This place was yummy and worth the wait. Kinda sucks that they don’t take credit cards though... especially for the price of all the meals (~$14 a plate).
Heather Scotty-Ramsey
Mama's opens at 8am and we got there at 7:10am and we were the 10th people in line. It was well worth the wait. My husband got the Dungeness crab omelette and I got the Bay shrimp omelette and we shared the French Toast Sampler. Everything was amazing, including the best raspberry jam I've ever eaten. So happy we decided to have breakfast at Mama's!
Gary Smith
Food is always fresh & tasty with a great range of choice on the menu. Staff are excellent, well mannered and fast service too. As a visitor to San Francisco it’s always my first port of call for breakfast or brunch and make it a point to go as often as possible

The best Monte Cristo i have ever had in my life. We waited 50min for brunch and it was worth EVERY MINUTE!! Put it at the top of your to-do list!! #supportsmallbusiness #qualityoverquantity

I love this restaurant it's such a treat to go to Every time I visit San Francisco I'm a former flight attendant and stumbled over Mama's years ago on a layover it's been 10 years since I've been in San Francisco and longing to visit! Worth the wait to stand in line! I promise next trip it'll be the first breakfast I have and maybe lunch!
Jeremy Pevnick
The Crab Cake Benedict was absolutely incredible. The staff was friendly and attentive. My banana french toast arrived cool and that's the only reason I can't give it 5 stars. Maybe that's how theirs is served, but I would've liked it hot or warm. Would definitely go again though and that Benny was exquisite!
Shaun Smith
The food and atmosphere was awesome! This is my first time visiting California and I must say the food was delicious and we were seated in a timely manner. Next time I am out here I will definitely come back.
Charlie Noble
Best dam monte cristo in the city! The potatoes and fruit were fresh! The line is totally worth the wait
Anthony Rubeo
Terribly slow, wait on line outside, wait on line inside, wait for your food at the table. $27 dollars for an omelet coffee and juice without tip.
Damain Subramanian
Definitely try out the famous money cristo sandwich and the pancakes with berries. Amazing!!!! The wait is about an hour to 1hr30mins but it is so worth it :)
Nicola Gilson
Yummy! The eggs Benedict were fantastic .. I had the “North beach” ones. The pancakes and French toast were awesome too.. the wait was a bummer but if you are not in a rush and are a patient person... worth trying!
Ruth Cathcart
A recommendation from a local, we were prepared to do the line up. However we came on a rainy weekday and the line went very quickly. Staff were attentive yet not your usual cafe style set up. You order in line and then get seated.
Coffee was delicious and we got the eggs Benedict. Meals were decent sizes and tasty. I’ve not got anything to compare to from SF breakfasts, but I’d say overall this was a standard nice meal. Don’t think I’d wait over an hour for it though. I saw others French toast and waffles and they looked amazing!
Aparajita Shorey
Expect at least a half an hour wait on a weekday and more on weekends. The best home style breakfast and brunch place in SFO. I was lucky to have visited the place when their famous crab benedict was available. The hollandaise sauce was perfection and the fresh crabs tasted so amazing with the well cooked potatoes. The next thing you need try are the brioche French toasts. The house made bread along with the home made jam was such an amazing end to my meal. They also have really amazing waffles. The best thing you can do is ask the owners for recommendations because I ordered everything he recommended and we loved it.
Kim Mendoza
Ordered the Mama’s Monte Cristo, Our Famous Monte Cristo, Crab Eggs Benedict, Old Fashioned Buttermilk Pancakes, and Two Farm Fresh Eggs with Bacon. Drinks were fresh orange juice and cafe mocha.

Absolutely. Amazing. Food is exactly how others claim it to be. We waited for an hour and a half but it is a non-negotiable during a visit to SFO. We also appreciated that by the time we got our table, all our orders were served together.

Even the potatoes were perfectly grilled to be toasted on one side, and the homemade jam was was a balance of sweet and a bit of berry sour. Really enjoyed these too!

Farm Fresh Eggs and Bacon were average however, and bacon was cooked on the harder side.

Mamas was recommended to us by a friend and lived up to our expectations! What a place! Amazing food, wonderful staff, great atmosphere. You’ll probably need to wait in line to get a table but it’s worth it. A must-visit for brunch when in San Francisco! ❤️
Chaaru Verma
We lined up for about 90 mins and the wait was so so worth it, I had French toast sampler and the portion was huge. It was a great experience, the staff make you feel welcome and the atmosphere is lovely.
Anant Gupta
Lovely little breakfast place! I loved their version of eggs benedict with crab (what an idea) and omelette! Yay! What a hidden gem! I'm definitely going back there whenever m back in the states! Quiche was awesome and so was the iced latte and spiked lemonade. Just made my day!

Mama’s on Washington Square was where we had breakfast on the last day we were in San Francisco. Apparently it was a local favourite, but now it is mostly tourist. We came a few minutes before opening and the line was down the block. Everyone wanted a taste of what Mama’s was offering. Once you get through the line, you’re line up again to order before getting seated.
Minerva Thai
We missed going to Mama's on our first trip to San Francisco not because we forgot about it; no, we took one look at the line wrapping around the building and up the street and decided we'd try our luck elsewhere. It constantly pops up in searches for favorite breakfast spots in the iconic city so eventually, we decided we'd need to give it a try. Also, if the lines are long, there must be a reason right? Our recent SF trip found time for us to snag spots before the opening hour and even then, there were quite the number of guests ahead of us. When we started moving and were the first people to have the door shut on us due to capacity, we wondered if it would take much longer; luckily, it was preemptive and we made it into the first round of people!
Food 2 Run
WOW - a massive long line to get in - was worth it - the breakfast was delicious and glad we hung around - an icon of San Fran - thumbs up from me
KC
The line is definitely long. Prepare to wait up to 1 hour atleast to get inside to order and get a table. Love the French toast , it was made perfectly and is probably one of the best I've had so far 😄
Brian Mc 8
45 minute wait but worth the wait! We had scrambled florentine and Santa Fe omelette and both were really good... Watching the food being prepared is great!
Sierra Bugatti
I love breakfast more than anything but I'm not a morning person. Heard about the long lines so we got up early to get in line. Was worth the wait. Best pancakes I've ever had, fluffy and hot and delicious.

Authenticity 3.5
Ambiance 2.6
Service 3.5
Deliciousness 1
Value for money 3

The place is cozy but not very appealing ... old and doubtfully clean.

Waited for around 20 min on a weekday in line.

Extremely friendly staff.

Best smoothie ever ... honey oranges berries and youghurt was amazing.

The food had a strange taste ...I didn't like the eggs Benedict or their famous French toast at all... it was oily and mostly burnt.

I honestly do not think it is worth the wait and the try if u are here for good tasty food. If u r here for saving few bucks then maybe.

Had breakfast at Mama's. The line was loooooong! But the food was great! Beautiful and fluffy pancake! Unfortunately the strawberry was sour... Loved the atmosphere and great service!

I was here on a Tuesday morning and there was a super long line. It took my friend and I about an hour to get a seat inside the restaurant. It was super crowded and we were sitting at a little corner. The service was slow and it took the waitress forever to bring us two glasses of water. However, the food was still as good as usual besides the long wait and the unattentive service.
Audrey
Was a good little quaint breakfast place. Ordered the eggs benedict and the i thought the hollandaise sauce was a bit too heavy tasting however i absolutely loved the potatoes!! My family ordered a bunch of other stuff and everything else was delicious :)
Elizabeth Campbell
I think they're quite good howeve one has to wait that's a given with this restaurant it has good home cooked meals that you just don't find everywhere.
Lrmorg
Not worth 1 hr wait. This was a standard fare breakfast. I would never wait in line for an hour again. I dined the next day at Hollywood's in Fisherman's Wharf, no wait, and had a massive breakfast with like 3 servings of fresh fruit on top!! Mama's is very average.

If there's anything I love as much as good food, it's traveling! Fortunately the BF's job as a commercial airline pilot allows us to jet set on a whim wherever our hearts desire (or at least wherever there are open seats!). We packed our bags and spent a week in California: 4 days in San Francisco, and 3 days in Napa. We ate, we drank, and we ate and drank some more. Today I'm recapping our time in San Francisco. Come back tomorrow for a recap of our visit to wine country! Upon our arrival we headed straight to The Mission for a self-guided taco crawl. After being given three recommendations from our San Fran friends Kacey and Mike, the BF and I decided to get a taco at all three. I mean, we had to do some research people! The first stop was La Palma Mexicatessen , which is more of a deli that also cooks food to order. The tortillas were pretty thick, almost like a pita. The tacos needed it because they were stuffed to the brim with fillings. We tried one pastor and one carnitas. The pastor was the winner (pictured on the right below). Tacos at La Palma Our next stop was at El Farolito where we each ordered a pastor taco. We decided if we were going to pick the best taco, they should be the same type. This was both of our favorite (and the cheapest). Great tortilla, well-seasoned pastor, cilantro and onion, and homemade salsas with a kick. I probably could have eaten another, but it was on to the next one... Tacos at El Farolito Our third and final stop is probably the most famous taco joint in the mission, La Taqueria. Yes, they have an unoriginal name, but they certainly make up for it with their food. We waited in a long line all for one pastor taco (we were pretty stuffed). I loved how you could watch them making the food right in front of you. It was an art form. I shared a video on my Instagram page if you're interested! This taco came in second place for us. The meat was tender and smokey, but lacked the flavor that El Farolito offered. The price was certainl

Not worth the wait The food.... Not worth the wait
The food was good but not worth the wait. we waited almost 1-3/4 hours on a rainy Friday morning and they only take debit cards or cash
Sean And Natalee
Bottom line. Not worth the 90 min wait. food is good, but there is a lot of good food in the bay area that you don't have to wait outside 30 min for.
The Tick
Worth the wait. Arrived at 8:08 am Saturday morning and waited over an hour to eat. Now after an hour wait you would have to thoughts on your meal 1) shoe leather would taste good at this point because your are so hungry or 2) nothing would satisfy you, meaning even French Laundry would taste like McDonald's. Lucky for me none of the above. The meal was excellent and meet all of my expectations. We had the smoked salmon scramble, Farmer's omelet, pancakes and carrot cake, Both omelets were loaded with the fixings. I thought there was equal amount of salmon and eggs, perfect for a smoke salmon lover. The pancakes were perfect with fluffiness and flavor. I would recommend you get something from their bakery and treat it as an appetizer, you can go wrong. Now the big questions was it work the wait. If you have the time and patience, yes make a trip to Washington Square. If not, don't worry there are plenty of other "must do" in San Fran that doesn't require three hours block of time for a meal.
Brian
Just came from mamas and was it ever worth the wait! We arrived @ 8:30 and waited 45min to be seated, drooling the whole time, especially when we passed in front of the prep stations on your way to pay. I had a south of the border omelette that contained some of the best black beans I have had in any dish. My wife's choice of the French toast sampler was clearly the winner. The cranberry-orange serving was the definite favorite (although all were good).
Voluptuous Viv
On a scale of 1-5 Ambience .... On a scale of 1-5
Ambience 2
Food 4
Service 3
The wait is ridiculously long. Search out another good place in the city w/o the wait
B - Man
Food is amazing. I had the South of the Border omelette and my wife had the French toast sampler. Both were really good. We got there around 7:20 am and made the first round of seats.

Though the food is amazing and the atmosphere is so cool, not sure I would want to wait over one hour to eat there. So get there around 7:15 am
Kaypack
This little place is a gem! So worth the wait, so be patient! You can't go wrong with anything on their menu! It is all good! And their raspberry jam is to die for! Highly recommended for me!
Spellfall
Loved it. We went first thing on a Sunday morning. Arrived at 7.30am, door opens t 8am and we were second in line. I had the North Beach eggs benedict (ie with prosciutto) and it was delicious. We also tried the cranberry and walnut French toast, also great. I think that would be the limit I'd wait for it though. I would go back again.
Tony
Good, but not worth more than 20 minutes wait. Food was very good. It's worth the wait... Well, maybe 20 minutes, but not 70+ minutes. Glad we finally got to check it out, but don't need to go back anytime soon.

If there's NO line, you should go. But if you don't want to wait, we found other nice restaurants within blocks:
*Caffe Delucchi (Columbus & Green) - Great Crab Cake Benedict!
* Mo's Grill (Grand near) - Great omelet!

Back to Mama's:
Got there on a drizzley day without an outside line! But, still had to wait 20 minutes to order. No prob. Server said we were lucky because it was a very slow day or we'd probably wait 70+ minutes on a mid-week morning.

French Toast Sampler - 4 stars
* Banana Nut, Regular & Cranberry. Three different style breads covered in blueberries, strawberries & sliced bananas. All were good, especially the cranberry.

Dungeness Crab Benedict - 2.5 stars ($21.95)
Very tasty, but for that price it was pretty skimpy on the crab. Eggs were too wet from poaching and made the bread soggy. The Hollandaise Sauce was good, but a bit tart and thicker than others. Home Fried Potatoes were good: Crispy on outside & tender on inside. (NOTE: other Benedicts are about half the Crab price.)

Service - 3 stars
* Efficient & no nonsense. But, neither very friendly nor engaging.

PS - they have THE smallest bathroom I've ever seen. But, it was clean with hot water. Just walk through the kitchen, out the back door, down the outside stairs, and don't be wearing a big jacket or you might not be able to turn around. ;-)
Amy Y
I didn't feel like it was worth the wait. Waited 1.5 hours in line. It was just ok. We decided on this restaurant due to its high reviews on urbanspoon. The eggs Benedict was tasty. The monte cristo lacked flavor. Potatoes were so-so. Potatoes were a little cold but they came out right when the were ready so that was surprising. I would only return if there was no wait, but I definitely wouldn't crave it.
Garrett Cheney
This place is amazing!! It was defiantly worth the wait. The staff was fantastic and helpful and the food was to die for. The jam was amazing and I loved my massive omelette. You have to go here. It is the best breakfast food you will ever have. Sorry mom.
Chad Schleicher
What you are reading about is correct the wait is very long. We waited for about an hour and fifteen minutes but we got there at 930. The food is absolutely worth it. The menu is unique, the items are fresh and the service is good. We had mimosa's which were excellent and the Benedict was great. A must try
Robert Brooks
Great breakfast and everyone knows it so get there early. You'll probably still have to queue to even get inside the place but it's worth the wait. Their Eggs Florentine are the best I've ever eaten but everything that comes out of the tiny kitchen looks awesome so I guess whatever you choose will be good
Gianni
We stumbled across this place after checking out Peter & Paul's Catherdral in North Beach. There was a sizable line but with in 20 minutes we were inside. The Mrs. had fabulous Sweedish French toast and I had the NW omelette. Both dishes were delicious and I also had some chicken and turkey sausage and an awesome cappuccino. Mama's is a great SF breakfast joint but we were told that it is not uncommon for a 2 hour wait and I don't think I would stand that long for breakfast
Bree Greenly
I liked it. The french toast, the eggs benidict, everything was great. Love the jam at the table. Just not sure I want to wait that long all the time
Marlow Moo
Over Hyped. We had heard about Mama's and their fantastic breakfast/brunch. When one arrives, the line up is almost always out the door, around the corner and up the block. It is quite the wait to get inside the door and place one's order at the til, then wait and hope for a table where one can sit down. After all the waiting and you know that you won't be able to relax and sit for a while after as everyone else is waiting for a table, one can only hope the food is worth it. Unfortunately, the food disappointed. Their eggs benedict had quite a salty hollandaise with slightly over cooked eggs. I wouldn't bother standing in more than 1/2 hour line up again to try anything else.
Anna Kark
We came Saturday half an hour before closing time, and got a table without too long of a wait. In any case, the wait was worth the great homey food. Their pancakes are excellent, the bread is perfectly crusty, the orange juice is fresh. I liked the tangy hollandaise, and my omelet was just wonderful, if maybe a little big, and the sour cream is great. The jam is a bit tart for me, but my mom was a big fan of it. So, there is a wait and it's maybe a little pricey for breakfast, but if neither of those things are a huge deterrent for you, you should definitely give it a try!
Kman
Disovered this place over 20 years ago and it's still one of my all time favorites for breakfast when in SF. Had lunch there for first time on june 8 and it was superb as well. Don't miss this place when in North Beach!

Can it get any better??. As I've said before, San Francisco has amazing food.

I stood in line for about 15-30min in the hot sun, but several people in line including a gentleman who goes every week assured us that we wouldn't regret it.

We walked in a nice yellow cottage like space of a restaurant with an open kitchen in the centre. As i peered at the menu, I watched the cooks create breakfast dishes right before my eyes. That was when we decided to order two dishes to share, I ordered Scrambled Florentine and my sister ordered the French Toast Sampler.
This was probably the best breakfast ever, the fruit with the french toast was so fresh, the french toast was cooked with 3 different breads, cinnamon, banana, and kugelhopf. So very tasty. The Scrambled Florentine came with potatoes that were seasoned so perfectly and the spinach was cooked to perfection.
I really really REALLY love San Franciscan food! Is the rest of American food this great???
LKelly
Thought one hour thirty mins was long to wait BUT it was worth it. Four of us shared four different dishes: two eggs and two French toast. Needless to day all were delicious especially humongous berries. Well worth price and wait!
Corinn45
Worth waiting for. Excellent breakfast! Got the french toast sampler and loved it! Coffee is tasty too. You will wait at least an hour, but it's worth it!
Jordan G
The hour wait is guaranteed but so is the most delicious breakfast you will ever have. Eveything is amazing from the omelets to their signature French toast. You won't regret a Saturday morning spent here!
Pdwm56
We love this place!. This is the kind of food we would all cook if we could. We love Mama's, I only wish it weren't so darn hard to get a table!
Love it!
Mary Griffen
We went during the weekday so there was no wait. I had the eggs Benedict with spinach shrooms and Canadian bacon which was excellent. I also recommend the blueberry sourcream cake. Service was great and staff was very friendly
Marck
Best Breakfast. I lived in the Bay Area for 20 years and this was and is my favorite breakfast place. I love it. The food is always fresh, well prepared and presented, and served quickly given how busy they tend to be. Good coffee, a great location..what more do you need?
Alexandra Ariel Lapidoth
The food was great. The presentation of the food preperation while waiting to order was mouth watering. However doesn't worth the wait. It's only breakfast
Hb
Outstanding quality of food wait is much too long
Gavin Holt
A MUST for breakfast in San Fran. Everything is really well made. It is worth the wait in line. Make sure that you come early and they close at 3pm. I recommend:

-Monte Cristo: completely doused (not just the bread. the ham and cheese melts in the middle of this sandwich

-Any omelet: made the way that it was intended; they are folded in half with goodies inside. Look to see if there are specials. I had one with crab, avocado, and brie.

-Eggs benedict: The florentine is pretty good, though the sauce is tartier than most. A little of it goes a long way.

The sweet thing is you can walk to Washington square from both the North Shore and Chinatown. If you park, the area has 2 hour parking, though it is really tough to find among local residents and be prepared to park on steep slopes.

It's SOOOOOOOOOOOO worth wait. No words.....
Sat
I absolutely love eggs benedict, and this version with dungeness crab really hit the spot – the crab was really fresh and did not overwhelm the dish. The hollandaise was really light and the brioche was just right. Super!

Mama’s on Washington Square is the most popular spot in San Francisco for brunch. They serve all of your typical American style brunch items. The line up here is a bit ridiculous. My Mom and I arrived a half an hour before they opened and there were already about 30 people in line and we ended up waiting an hour before we got in the door. I hadn’t had a coffee yet, and waiting so long for breakfast made me grumpy. When I finally got in the doors I needed a coffee ASAP. I was happy to see they had a soy latte. The mug it comes in is quite large and I couldn’t actually finish it all. The coffee tasted a bit watered down and it didn’t have a very strong espresso flavour, but it fulfilled my caffeine needs. I had the crab benedict that was topped with fresh baby spinach and hollandaise. They were very generous with the crab meat. The English muffins were overflowing with it. It tasted fresh and delicious. The eggs were poached a bit too hard so the yolk wasn’t a runny as I would have liked

Mama’s is a local legend, and if the lines on a Tuesday are anything to go by, I’d hate to see the lines on a weekend. Famous for their omelette’s and their french toast creations, Mama’s has been serving up great grub for over 50 years, and have accolades from such illustrious tomes as Time, USA Today, The Travel Channel & The Food Network.

Whilst the Kugelhopf did tempt sorely, I couldn't go past the chocolate cinnamon french toast with fresh seasonal berries and bananas, liberally piled on top like the prettiest red and blue bouquet I had ever seen.

This is a food shrine - this place rocks my world enough that I will schlep from the far east bay and wait in line for a half hour or so on a weekend morning (before coffee mind you) …me and a lot
