Review Phil's Bbq - San Diego

Eric Munoz
It is absolutely one of the best BBQ restaurants I've visited in California! We beat the crowd when we showed up, but it was still bustling with customers and cooks. We found a seat quickly and enjoyed an overflowing pulled pork sandwich and onion rings. This thing had enough meat for 2 sandwiches! It's definitely a must visit destination when you're in town!

Everyone loves Phil's BBQ! I hadn't been here in over 10 years. Came back for lunch with the family and had a great meal. Go for the beef ribs of course!

Very lively atmosphere. The food was great. Ordered baby back ribs n chicken dinner w/ 2 small sides (beans n potato salad), and 2 beef ribs. The chicken was ok.... if we come back to SD we'll just order something other than the chicken.

Very casual BBQ restaurant with very good food. My first time there came highly recommended by some friends. Be prepared to get very saucy, the meat is very tender it falls right off the bone. I don’t know about having that much sauce on BBQ it is up for a debates. For me personally I prefer the Texas style BBQ. The service was awesome, and they do have stations where you can wash your hands. Plenty of parking outside. I was very pleased with everything, if you happen to be in the area give it a try, I am sure you’ll like it.

Great food! We ordered six wings, which were fantastic, the four-rib meal with fries and potato salad, and a Broham (pulled pork) sandwich. The meats were tender and flavorful, and the sides were both high-quality. I didn’t personally love the sauce, but my wife sure did We were seated very quickly. Good ambiance, decent service, reasonable price ($50 total), and huge portions. Next time I visit San Diego, I’ll go back to Phil’s!

Tonight we sat in the bar area. It was a whole different experience than ordering at the counter. Our server, Roxy, was the best. A gentleman helped too but I didn't get his name. The food? Stop it. So delicious and consistently so. Their fries are #1 .. dipped in their BBQ sauce. Yum. I do have to be honest because what happened to your beans? No bueno. Used to be much better but we enjoyed ourselves and will be back soon. We've been coming here for decades.

We treat ourselves to Phil's every time we visit San Diego. It's so popular that it's always mobbed and there's a line outside so if that's a problem go for lunch or have an early dinner. All of the food is great but they're famous for their ribs and BBQ sauce. Both their pork and beef ribs are SO good. Their sauce is so good we always take a bottle home and whenever we visit my sister in Austria she insists we bring her some. The staff is always great. Convenient parking and location.

Solid play, all the way around. Service and food are equal in excellence. 1st time here. Leaving the marina I would always see the long lines..and thought , one day I'll go there. I'm glad I did. Beef ribs so soft you would think they were baby back. Recommend you go if you're within 50 miles or more.

First time at this restaurant, and i was overwhelmed by their menu. After going back and forth on options, settled with sandwiches. All were delicious, but the service was incredible. Dom made us feel welcome and made sure we had everything we needed. A must stop in San Diego.

Average price acceptable taste. What I liked the most: 1- Before the restaurant closing time the staff went around the tables offering free food 🥹 2- They provided take out boxes to allow you take your excess food with you. 3- Refillable beverage any time and anywhere.

There’s a window on the side of the entrance (by the bar) where you can ask for a table and sit for full service! Otherwise you make the line and order the food, sit with a buzzer, and then go pick up your food. Anyway, I had half a rack of the baby back ribs and it was DELICIOUS!! The flavor was so full and rich. The fries were great too! I’ve also had the BBQ Broham sandwich…that was amazing! It was “overstuffed” so I got to eat the pulled pork that was left over. Also 10/10! I loved it! The staff/servers here are also very kind and helpful. I had a great experience here and can’t wait to come back!

San Diego native visiting from Washington State. We were surprised by not only the new bar put in place but by the menus. We were seated near Adrian, one of the bartenders. He was such a pleasure to run into. Great attitude, welcoming, work ethic, very knowledgeable. If you walk in, make sure to ask him for a recommendation 😉 thank you Adrian!! Next time you'll take the shirt off our back!!

First I must say BBQ is the best when it has the right spice rub and the right BBQ sauce. Now I love Phil's rub on the rib less and chick less dinner. I enjoy the fries. (I am a fry freak) I have tried the loaded Broham fries, loaded El Toro fries, and the plain fries so let me say again I enjoy the fries!! The baked beans are also yummy. Now here is where the taste buds are different for some people. My husband loves the BBQ sauce, me not so much. I have to get the sauce on the side, than I give it to my husband and I don't use sauce when I eat there or when I bring it home I add a different BBQ sauce. The flavor of the spice rub is delicious by itself so I like eating it without sauce. My husband also loves the coleslaw, me not so much! Now I only drink sweet tea when I eat BBQ so I had to try it at Phil's and let me tell you it is the Best Sweet Tea I have had in a long time. We had to also try these collosal onion rings so crunchy and delicious. Will I go back to Phil's again... Yes. Every week until I get tired of eating BBQ. Staff is very friendly, but I would like to give a personal shout-out to Mila. When she took our order she was friendly, kind had a wonderful attitude and a great smile. She is the kind of employee you want to be around to keep customers happy and walking away with a smile.

If you are visiting San Diego, then you need to eat at Phil's BBQ. I am from Arizona and anytime we visit we have to eat at Phil's. It is some of the best BBQ I have ever had. The staff is friendly and awesome. The cornbread is so tasty. I love all their sides.

Highlight of our SD trip! Tip 1: Get the fresh pickle! Tip 2: There’s 2 lines!! To Go orders on the left and Dine-in on the right!! Make sure you check the front of the line near the entrance before getting in line, the line that you see wrapping around is typically their dine-in line so you can skip that. There was a lady asking people if they were dining in or getting to go when I was in line but there isn’t a dedicated person helping with the line so make sure you check before wasting time. Baby rack ribs are delicious! The only thing is that they aren’t fall off the bone tender. However they have a nice smoky flavor and they drizzle some sauce on top. The bbq sauce is a nice sweet, spicy, and tangy sauce that you def need to buy a bottle of to take home with you! Baked beans have a strong honey flavor which was nice at first but then got a littler overpowering as the meal progressed. The slaw is good, not amazing. The cornbread is on the moist side. The maple butter is okay. Onions are indeed giant and FRIED fried! Aka really crunchy. Oo the ranch that came with this was really good too! It was a nice tangy ranch. Overall the staff are all super friendly and quick! The gentlemen that helped us was soooo nice and humorous. Dogs are allowed on their patios! The have patios on both sides. No tvs but there are lights and heat lamps. Sinks outside of the restrooms is clutch. I loved their ice! Random but I’m an ice-muncher but their ice is god-tier-better-than-Sonics-ice! Can’t wait to go back!

Always good to visit Phil's BBQ when visiting San Diego. Food is tasty, service is great and the vibe & atmosphere is great. Plenty of free parking spaces is a plus.

it was my favorite place for ribs...they changed the ordering format to a McDonald's style. The food is good but it became a fast food restaurant. I prefer the old school format where a waiter takes your order.

Not sure I can add more to the positive reviews other than coming from TX where there are dozens of award winning bbq joints, Phil’s can definitely compete. My first time here did not disappoint. I just beat the long line and counter person suggested the baby back ribs and macaroni. First, the ribs were a good portion size, tender and sauce was tangy, tasty. Baked beans and Mac were excellent. No complaints here.
