Review Suckerfree Southern Plate And Bar - San Diego

We had a 5pm reservation but due to traffic we were 15 minutes. The food was great. Huge portions. Keya was an excellent server. The drinks were great. The only thing was they were out of some of appetizers but they made up with it other options. Thank you. We'll be back.

Was walking in Gaslamp district and came upon this restaurant. The staff was friendly. Especially the bartenders. The food came out slowly. The overall experience was good. I got the chicken and waffles and fried gizzards. My friends got fried green 🍅 tomatoes, pulled pork, collard greens, mash potatoes, catfish nuggets, and chicken. The gizzards were fried to hard. Everyone enjoyed the food. The atmosphere and decor was really night. Recommend visiting if you are in the area

Very tasty southern food. I grew up in Virginia and this qualifies as authentic Southern food, with a slight emphasis towards Cajun style southern. Apologies that the photos are all half-eaten food, normally I get pictures before digging in but I guess I wasn't able to hold back this time ;)

This is seriously the best southern food restaurant I have been to away from home (Louisiana). I felt right at home with good food, drink, music, and people. The service was incredible everyone at the spot became family right away. I can't wait to get back here. I will make a special trip EVERY time I go San Diego.

Everything I tried was good. I have high blood pressure so I was concerned but I had no problems with eating 1 piece of fried chicken ,bowl of greens with Turkey necks( spicy)macaroni cheese, ( nice portions of it)and the sweet yams. Personally, the yams were my least favorite. R&B music in the background. Helpful waiters.

Had a late lunch here. Although the place was mostly empty, the service was slow and uneven. We had to ask for utensils and ny friend had to remind the waiter of her drink order three times. As for the food, it’s delicious. Do not miss out on trying the buttery grits. They’re insanely good! The mac & cheese flight is another must have. The chicken sandwich was ok. Nothing crazy. It could’ve used some more garnishes (lettuce, tomato, pickle).

I know..I know...are they really open?? Should you call first or just go - can you pay any attention to the opening times listed on their website or the sign outside or their menu or their fb page? Nope. They gotta do better. JUST GO!! On our 3rd try ( the 2nd was during the pandemic/holiday wknd - so perhaps that wont count) the food/cocktails AND the service was very very good. Not specifically surprising based on what past guests have shared. The wings: prepared perfectly extra well done with a tasty sauce. The fried catfish: served hot..tender and seasoned. The duck tacos: Surprise! They were delicious...dont be afraid - extremely similar to seasoned chicken thighs. That dark smokey meat and the salsa...bomb! Cocktails were on point. They pour a good drink. The bartender was attentive and friendly....and made happy hour....happier. The vibe is neo soul chill...so it's perfect for a dinner date or a casual meetup for apps & cocktails. Happy hour specials are available and should not be missed. It was def worth the wait and a 2nd or 3rd visit is already planned. Let's all try to support this business by treating them to another chance...or a first. It really is that good.

Came in for the soft opening. Brought to you by the owner of Streetcar Merchants of Chicken and Donuts. I knew I would not be disappointed. The location is on Fourth Ave across from Horton Plaza. The space has an open warehouse feel, brick walls, bench seating against the far walls and small wooden tables. The decor is a bit nostalgic- think NWA and Mr T. - if that’s what your childhood was filled with. Now to breakfast. The cocktail menu is still in the works, but they have a full bar so we just grabbed a couple of mimosas. Well made, good ratio and refreshing. My partner ordered the chicken and waffles. Since she has been a fan of Streetcar’s chicken so I knew it would be a win. The chicken is moist and juicy with a deliciously crunchy outside. The waffle was perfect. Let me be clear. Perfect. I’ll tell you why- is has a very light sweetness to it, it’s not heavy like bread, it’s light and has a perfect crunch on the outside. It’s perfect. (yes I’m a total waffle snob -I’ll own that. But credit where it’s due and they did great. ) I had the pancake flight with a side of scrambled eggs. A pancake flight! You get to choose 3 of the 10 or so available flavors. I chose red velvet, maple bourbon and spiked peach cobbler. The red velvet is made for those with a sweet tooth. The peach cobbler was a southern style cobbler and delish! The maple bourbon was just right and a great compliment to the other two flavors sweetness. The eggs were scrambled well no signs of brown and not runny. Our waitress Amber was excellent answering all our questions about the menu and the space and future plans. We are looking forward to bringing the beast to the dog friendly patio. Great first impression looking forward to many more visits! Grand opening should be in the next week or two. I look forward to attending and evening trying to host a few events here. It’s a wonderful space!

The grilled porkchops were fire. However  the  dirty rice was greasy and spicy & not  in the  savory  dirty  rice way. Greens we're  good. The yams wernt as candied as they could  have been. Seemed like they were missing  a lil nutmeg & brown sugar.  Loved the vibe  of the place  mad #dope. Only thing i didnt  like was that there  were no substitutions  on menu items.  People  like to pick thier own sides  in the plate section.  Staff  were helpful.

This place is fantastic! The decor is amazing, they have a mural of all the original members of NWA on the ceiling, throw back hip hop overhead and wonderful to satiate the appetite. I had the seafood combo meal it comes with a huge piece of fish, fries, jumbo shrimp, a crabcake & two hushpuppies for only $20. It was well seasoned and very delicious, the only issue I had, is that the breading came apart from the fish, but it was still good! I also had a cafe au lait that was very good as well. They offer a breakfast and lunch menu and you are able to order from either side. The staff are friendly and Amber was awesome. I will most definitely be back again!!!

Good...with a side of meh. The food is pretty good, although the service could be a bit more attentive. This place has a lot of culture, atmosphere and amazing energy. Stay away from the cole slaw but definitely try the mac and cheese and chicken and waffles. Definitely coming back to try other items on the menu. See you there!

Absolutely fantastic southern food. I haven't had anything like this in SoCal. The chicken, gizzards and sides were fantastic and the portions are large. Everything is prepared fresh so the food comes out nice and hot. The Kool-Aid Margarita is very good. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The location is nice with outdoor seating and walking distance to the ballpark.

In the heart of downtown San Diego rests one of the best southern restaurants in California. The chicken and waffles was amazing. The atmosphere was also top notch. It was a high end look with a hip hop vibe. This is a must stop if you are in San Diego.
