Review Filippi's Pizza Grotto Kearny Mesa - San Diego

Husband had pizza cravings one night and ordered delivery. Scheduled it for the next afternoon and it came just in time. He got the Vegetarian Pizza with Pepperoni. Really good pizza! Good amount of toppings, and also good amount of cheese. They put the veggies and pepperoni first and then the cheese on top with wad a little weird tbh. Cheese seemed to come off the top when biting into the slice. Would have been perfect if the cheese was under the toppings. Thick fluffy crust which was really crispy when reheated in the air fryer. Good even 2 days later!

Meatball was great, pizza was really good, bread was okay, but the marinara sauce was really good. I used DoorDash, and the service was super quick and delivered to my hotel.

Pizza was perfect and crust tasty as it gets. Salad fresh, delicious and nutritious to boot. Staff very helpful. What a team. Thanks... They SCORED BIG once again. And, I did not knock over any drinks or inadvertently slip the Pizza onto the floor. The were so kind and understanding. But, don't push it! Lol

It was my first time that I had eaten at this Filippi's Pizza Grotto and let me tell you our food was delicious. We ordered a family meal special that came with a small Cheese Pizza, Lasagna, Spaghetti, large house salad and bread for about $35.00. We also had plenty of leftovers to take home. Our Service was excellent we were well taken care of by Anthony who is very quick and efficient team player with a great sense of humor. I also noticed that he was not only serving our table but also assisting other servers with their table. Thanks for the great service Mr. Anthony👍

Great location, good parking, good service, and great food. If you’re going for lunch, then get there as early as you can after the doors open because the rush is no joke and the wait for your food can feel like forever. If you’re stuck in the wait, then make sure you’re with people you like.

We (4 people) ate 2 wonderful large and super delicious pizza. ( bbq pizza + pepperoni) The service was so kind and friendly. And it is a pretty big place so you feel the space. Thank you Christian for your kind and helpful service ! Me and my family enjoyed a lot!

The quality and amount of food for the price is a really good deal. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is comfortable. My roommate and I enjoy eating here on a regular basis. Definately a good find for me! Big portions for the money. A small salad feeds two. The pizza has a mountain of cheese! And the ravioli is delicious, I recommend cheese ravioli with meat sauce 😋

The pizza and torpedoes here are always really good, the pizza has a unique taste because of the cheese and a wonderful crust, no matter what toppings you get. We moved to the Vegas area four years ago and every time we come to San Diego we always stop at Filippis for lunch or dinner. The torpedoes are really good as well, we always get one of those with extra lettuce. The person who assisted us today at the front counter, his name is Garrett was excellent, very friendly and helpful. Exemplary customer service.

Went on Mother’s Day for the first time. Decided to go right when they opened in anticipation for crowds. Very few people when we arrived so was thinking we would be able to get our food pretty quickly. Got our table immediately and ordered garlic bread. Our lovely waitress had it out to us within 5 minutes. Unfortunately, it was 30-40 minutes before we got our meal. There weren’t that many people there yet but only one waiter/waitress on each side and they were doing their best. Food was excellent but they definitely needed much more help on such a busy day.

Diana was excellent! She was quick, attentive, and incredibly nice. She took great care of us on Christmas Eve and we will absolutely be back again.

The food was amazing and the service wonderful. We found this Italian restaurant by accident but will be back!

The Filippi's restaurants have the best pizza hands down. They put the toppings under the cheese so they stay moist and don't dry out or burn like at every other pizza shop I've ever ordered from. We got the Meat Lovers large pizza. It comes with pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, and Canadian bacon. It was a carnivore's dream. The outer crust was crispy and the slices were foldable, like New York pizza. There is a perfect balance of sauce and cheese. This is my go to place when I'm craving excellent pizza.

Family owned and run establishment and it shows. The staff is very friendly and helpful when trying to make decisions on a hungry stomach. The food they prepare is delicious with a home-cooked taste and not just another quick restaurant. The pizza 🍕 is made Chicago deep-dish style with the cheese 🧀 melted over the top, instead of the traditional toppings on top of the cheese. This was my 1st time visiting and I am looking forward to checking out their other locations around the area.

It was busy, but we were seated right away. Our server was there quickly with water and bread. Our pizza took awhile as there was a mishap in the kitchen - another server ran into ours and our pizza hit the floor. We had a fresh one in less than 10 minutes. When finished eating, we were given some yummy spomoni. We've eating here since I was a kid - a family tradition, now three generations have made this our favorite Italian restaurant.

Love the atmosphere, food and staff! The pizza sauce at this Filippi’s is amazing! I’m a regular at this location, well, for the take-out and a beer or two at the bar!

We were looking for some place to have a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived, were greeted with a smile and quickly seated! Our waitress brought our drinks and bread immediately. We ordered the Chicken Parm and a personal pizza. Both were great. The pizza was amazing! We live nearby the Norco location and hope it is just as good!

Fifty years ago, when I was 16 yrs old and my sister was 18 yrs old, we would put a quarters worth of gas in my brother in law's '52 Chevy and drive across San Diego to Filippi's on India Street for the very best pizza in town!! We would literally run thru the deli at the store front to escape the pungent aroma of the hanging dried fish and the huge logs of cheese. After all these years I have yet to find a better pizza. My review is 50 years late.

Excellent service and absolutely the best pizza in San Diego! I always make it a point to stop by one of the Filippi's locations when I come down from Los Angeles!!!

The best lunch you could ever ask for! A fine salad, great fresh main dish, and hot fresh bread for about $11 total. Don't forget happy hour drinks! Love everything about this place...and get that pizza to go for later!

We had our drink and food order taken in one minute. Another minute we had our drinks and hot bread. In less than 5 minutes we each had lasagna delivered to us. Our waitress was winderful andthe food was delicious. There was a huge group next to us who were very, very loud. They had already received their check and to-go boxes when we arrived, but we're still there when we left. There was nothing the restaurant could do about it. We couldn't even talk to each other, but it's not the restaurants fault. I would go back again and again and have been going there for many, many years.

The bartenders have worked here forever and it is a family feeling environment and they even have special drinks named after one of the bartenders. Have a glass of wine or two and then the best lasagna in town - a perfect Sunday

Our go to spot is the one on India but when the line is too long, this place is our backup.. just as good and a bigger location..

Worst restaurant experience ever! And that's saying something knowing that I used to be a server in a full-service restaurant, so I'm a very patient person when it comes to being waited on. My party of four and my baby (who slept the entire time) were immediately waited on, and our drink orders were taken. I went to the restroom to change the baby while waiting on the drinks to come out and to prevent him from crying. When I returned to the table, we waited 35 minutes for the waitress Soledad to take our order, which was one pizza that we were going to split. Another party of four that sat down when we did was next to our table and were finished eating by the time our order was taken. Even they were asking why it was taking so long for us to get any service. Soledad's excuse for not even serving us the bread that all tables get with their drinks, or even asking for our food order? And keep in mind that she is telling this to the table next to us where we can hear her, that she didn't come help us because I was in the bathroom changing the baby! 35 minutes after I finish changing him?! And she proceeds to tell this other table that we didn't get the bread because we're getting a 10% military discount (one in our party was in uniform). So she blamed her poor service on me, my baby, and a armed services member. We asked to talk with a manager, and gets the real kicker.... our waitress was the manager! She brought out round pasta takeout containers for our pizza that our pizza couldn't even fit inside of them. I have been to this pizza chain in Chula Vista, and it was amazing. Both the food and service. But I have never been so embarrassed and mad leaving a restaurant. Oh and I had to leave before finishing half of a piece of pizza because we were there so long that I had to go home to feed my baby. Keep in mind that I actually fed him while waiting for a table, so it hadn't been that long ago. 15 minutes for a table (not bad at all). 35 minutes for our food order (ridiculous). 30 minutes for the pizza to come out (understandable). Another 20 to cash out the check (also terrible). There almost 2 hours total. I would understand if it were busy, but this was a Wednesday evening. I will NEVER go back to this place.

Great pizza and value

Filippi’s isn’t fancy but serves great pizza and Italian fare. We thoroughly enjoyed the Works pizza and the ravioli.

Filippis is not closed. Filippis in Kearny Mesa is open.

Very slow. We got there at 7 pm. We ordered at 7:15. We did not get our dinner until 8:15 pm. The people who work there were nice but our party of 9 were puzzled why we did not get our food for an hour. There was no explanation in between the delay. I probably won't go back there. I don't recommend this restaurant. The food is mediocre.

Oh, this was not a good experience. It’s a couple hours after the meal, and I have heartburn or something. Ack. I ate at this restaurant about 10 years ago on another visit to San Diego. I saw it as I was driving to the hotel for this latest visit. After I ate there, I remembered why I haven’t eaten there in 10 years… I got there around 1845 and was seated immediately. The place was about half full, and was when I left at 2005. I had a bit of a wait for the server to notice. I ordered dinner and a Ceasar Salad. What was delivered was a salad with ceasar greens, with a lite Italian dressing. It wasn’t too bad, but it was not what I ordered. It came with a loaflet of white baked bread that wasn’t too bad. The iced tea was terrible. It tasted like… algea. I wonder if the tea maker hadn’t been cleaned in a while. I could not tell if the tea was fresh brewed, or concentrate, or instant. Yuk. I actually asked to switch to Coke, but they are a Pepsi-only place, so I just stuck with water. The
